2 Chapter Tool Kit Find a Craft/State Fair or Festival Finding a Craft/State Fair or Festival There are multiple websites where you can find arts and crafts fairs and festivals for your Chapter to participate in, fundraise through selling merchandise, and recruit new members. Eventbrite Evenbrite is a self-service ticketing platform where organizations can advertise and sell tickets for their upcoming events. Not only is it a resource to find events, but also it is a place to promote your events for free. FairsandFestivals.Net FairsandFestivals.net is an internet resource for festival lovers and businesses in the fairs and festivals industry. The site lists events and provides how-to articles to help you prepare for participating in an event. FestivalNet FestivalNet publishes an extensive and comprehensive database of festivals and fairs in North America. The site also provides tips for participating in a show. Craftermaster Enterprises The Art and Craft Show Yellow Pages lists thousands of arts and crafts shows, including local shows, street fairs, festivals, county and state fairs, holiday gift fairs, farmers markets, trade shows and more. Another great resource is your local community. In addition to finding events where you can raise awareness of your Chapter, you may be able to promote your Chapter events through local resources for a nominal or no cost. Here are suggestions for places/organizations to explore in your community: Chamber of Commerce Civic center Churches Malls/Shopping centers Parks Schools Town/City/County website and Facebook/social media page There may be more opportunities for you to raise awareness of your Chapter locally. Think of places and events near you that attract a crowd. To achieve success in recruiting members and raising money, you need to find the people interested in your Chapter you can t expect they will find you!

3 Chapter Tool Kit Get Your Chapter Media Coverage How to Write a News Release A news release is written in the same format as a newspaper article so journalists can understand how the story can be presented in an interesting format to their readers and easily repurpose the story in their print or online media. A news release should always be written with the audience in mind. Think about the audience who reads the newspaper/column/blog to which you are sending a news release. If your story isn t newsworthy to the audience, there is a good chance the journalist won t cover it. News Release Format 1. Headline: Get the reader interested. Write the headline you want to see on the article in the target publication. 2. Sub-Head: Entice the reader to consume your story. A sub-head allows you to provide additional detail than the headline. It should be one sentence. 3. Dateline: Include the city and state of your Chapter, and the date of the release. 4. Lead Sentence/Lead Paragraph: Hook the reader s attention to get them to read past this sentence. Follow with the purpose of your story pertinent information (i.e. who, what when where, and why). 5. Call to Action: Most readers won t make it to the end of your story. Insert your call to action, such as why the reader should attend your event, after the first or second paragraph. 6. Copy Body: Tell the story, add dimension and readability, with quotes, bullet points and paragraph heads in bold text. Give the reader reasons to keep going. Bold fonts and provocative section heads draw readers eyes in, and build more attention. 7. Boilerplate: Establish your Chapter s brand credentials and give journalists the about us information they need for the story. 8. Additional Resources: Provide additional information, such as a person to contact, pictures, videos and website links, so journalists can use it as a reference for research or to further develop the story. This information can be included by phone or in an separate from the news release document. You can include contact information within the news release document if you want it published so readers can contact your Chapter directly. 8. End: Include this symbol - ### - at the end of your news release to show there is no more content. Try to keep your news release to one page.

Follow with the information that should be included in the lead paragraph. Enter the call to action. The next several paragraphs should focus on answering what your story is about. Keep your story compelling and interesting for your intended audience. Include quotes and additional information that you want your readers to know. The last paragraph should include the information that is least relevant. Readers may not read your entire story. Also, journalists may not publish your entire story due to space limitations. 7 Chapter Tool Kit Chapter Forms & Deadlines Annual Chapter Form After your Chapter election, complete and return this form with the annual Chapter fee of $35, plus 10 cents per member, by January 15 of each year. The amount due is based on your Chapter membership as of December 31 of each year. A Chapter roster verifying the number of members, and their valid SDP membership, must accompany the form. Chapter Liability Insurance Invoices will be mailed to the Chapter President in October/November of each year. Payment is due by January 15 of the following year. Liability insurance covers injuries or damage caused by a Chapter member while conducting Chapter activities. Treasurer s Year-End Report This is a required report also due by January 15 of each year. IRS Form 990-N This electronic form is located at and the receipt of this form must be submitted by January 15 of each year for the previous tax year. Remember to use your full chapter name (no abbreviations). Your Chapter risks losing your tax-exempt status if this annual report is not filed. All Chapter forms (with the exception of the Chapter Liability Insurance, which is mailed to Chapter Presidents) are included in this Chapter Tool Kit. The participation of chapters and scope of activities in which they are involved is a source of pride for every member of the Society. The Chapter Officers should complete and mail the award form to SDP no later than January 15, Attn: CHAPTERS, 1220 E 1st St; Wichita, Kansas or to: chapters@decorativepainters.org Questions? PIease call (316) EIGHT MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS for all affiliated chapters - Please check as achieved and enclose necessary documentation and fees. 1. The chapter verifies that all Chapter members are members of the Society of Decorative Painters. 2. Chapter has filed IRS Form 990-N as required and has mailed/ ed the IRS receipt to SDP. (This is due after January 1 so you can file all paperwork together with SDP.) 3. The chapter sent the Annual Chapter Form, which lists chapter officers and chairpersons with their addresses, telephone numbers and addresses, and the total gross receipts anticipated for the year. This report is due upon chapter election and must be postmarked by January 15 of each year. The Annual Chapter Form must be sent even if the officers remain the same. 4. Chapter liability insurance premium (US chapters only) and chapter service fee has been paid by the due date of January Chapter sent a member roster to SDP with the Annual Chapter form OR a current roster is enclosed with this form. 6. If there was a Chapter Bylaw or Standing Rule revision, a copy was sent to SDP. 7. The chapter conducted a minimum of the required four (4) business meetings in the current year. 8. The Chapter President's address is on file with SDP as required. If you have completed the eight (8) mandatory requirements above, and have fulfilled a minimum of ten (10) items on the following pages, you are eligible to apply for the Chapter Achievement Award; applying for the award is optional. Chapter does not qualify for the award, but is sending the information to advise the Society of their activities and for publication consideration in The Decorative Painter magazine. Achievements must have been completed between January 1 and December 31. If additional space is needed, refer to item number and attach additional pages.
