therapeutic features of OUR TREATMENT PROGRAM Group and Individual Therapy Utilizing group as well as individual therapy, we partner with you to identify and focus on specific co-occurring disorders and treat them with appropriate, evidence-based treatments. This therapy incorporates cognitive, behavioral, and dynamic elements to provide you with new information and perspectives on addiction and mental health, new coping strategies for dealing with external and internal triggers, and practice in applying those tools. Family Program We believe in the healing of the whole family. Through educational & group sharing sessions, loved ones can develop new perspectives that will help them find personal healing and define their roles in the recovery process. Our goal is to help families cultivate positive coping skills, communication & behaviors that promote renewal and healthy interaction. Adventure Therapy At Michael s House, treatment is about healing the whole person. We focus on a number of therapeutic activities to promote health and wellness, and adventure therapy is part of our multi-faceted program. Activities like rock climbing, equine therapy, horseback riding, hikes and fun recreational outings add to the treatment experience. On-site pools and off-site gym time also provide opportunities for positive physical activity. Sleep Program Our program offers a series of skills and practical solutions for restoring a healthy sleep balance and regaining positive rest patterns. Participation is voluntary, and the sessions take place seven nights a week. Patients get a snack that encourages sleep (chamomile tea along with certain fruits and other foods) and are able to check out ipods preprogrammed with a soothing, sleep-inducing playlist. The nightly sleep program meetings also include discussion questions that change daily, tips for encouraging sleep and exercises aimed at relaxing the mind & body. 5 Trauma Recovery A person may turn to drugs and alcohol as an effort to escape feelings of anxiety and stress related to trauma. Self-destructive behaviors, anxiety, intense anger, flashbacks, insomnia, emotional exhaustion, isolation and other symptoms might affect a traumatized person. Our approach at Michael s House is to effectively help a person better understand trauma in a caring and hopeful environment. We know that resolving trauma in a safe atmosphere is key to recovering from mental health issues and finding the ability to flourish in life again.

HOLISTIC SERVICES The therapeutic program at Michael s House is supplemented with a variety of holistic services. It is our desire that you receive a comprehensive, transformative experience that will increase your motivation, decrease your stress and give you the tools you need to succeed in recovery. During treatment at Michael s House, patients may participate in a number of engaging activities. Through yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and meditation, individuals can learn the benefits of calming the mind and regaining positive physical and emotional balance. In activities such as equine therapy, patients discover their nonverbal communication skills and learn valuable lessons from working with horses. Horseback riding, hikes and other adventure options provide an opportunity for exercise and unique outdoor excursions, while art therapy gives individuals the chance to express themselves in a personalized way. In addition, recreational options such as swimming and volleyball allow patients to be active and bond with peers. Our holistic and recreational activities create a vital contrast to traditional talk therapies, acting as an outlet for energy and emotions while also giving patients a chance to process what they have learned. 6

special feature ADVENTURE & RECREATION At Michael s House, we seek to engage patients at their own levels of comfort for recreation. Leisurely hikes contrast with more intensive hikes out in the Palm Springs area, where the rugged landscape provides fresh scenery and physical challenges. The nearby Joshua Tree National Park provides a world-class hiking opportunity while offering time for mindfulness and anxiety relief. The Palm Springs Tramway is a popular choice because it offers a gentle, scenic ride up to a forest hiking spot that gives patients a unique low-impact experience of a beautiful mountain range. We encourage our patients to stretch themselves and take advantage of these new activities as opportunities to gain a renewed perspective. Physical activities can broaden one s horizons, and our goal is to engage both the body and mind in the recovery process. 7

STABILIZATION CENTER Michael s House Stabilization Center eases individuals into the treatment process, allowing them time to acclimate and prepare for the journey ahead. This unique facility includes rooms surrounding a swimming pool, a serene dining area, lounge areas, group rooms and staff offices. While stabilization is the least interactive stage of treatment, residents can still participate in some therapeutic and recreational activities. Individuals in the detox phase have an optional schedule while they are medically stabilizing. Once they have completed that process, they can take part in meditation walks, process groups, creative arts, yoga, our restorative sleep program, reflection time, orientation sessions and more. When detoxing from a substance, residents bodies require plenty of rest. They may also need to adjust and stabilize on new medications for a co-occurring mental health disorder. We encourage residents to take the time during stabilization to relax, settle into their rooms and get to know the treatment center. The most important thing is that they take it easy and allow their minds and bodies to heal. 8

WOMEN S CENTER Meeting the Unique Needs of Women The core of the Michael s House clinical approach toward women is focused on resiliency. In this exquisite, meditative environment, women are encouraged to identify their unique gifts, build self-esteem, recognize the value of healthy life skills and begin to realize that their growing empowerment can help them respond to whatever life brings with renewed hope and perspective. In our women s program, residents learn to regulate their emotions and behaviors so that they can approach life s challenges with peace and confidence. We find that as a clearer understanding of an individual s own strength emerges, a newfound self-esteem becomes possible. Our Program at the Women s Center The program at the Michael s House Women s Center includes a number of dynamic sessions and groups. Residents can participate in a Dialectical Behavior Therapy group, process groups, a body image group, an LGBT process group, two individual therapy sessions per week, educational groups, relapse prevention planning and a restorative sleep program. As women begin to process their emotions and rediscover their authentic identities in recovery, any underlying issues or trauma that might surface naturally can be addressed as needed. The multi-disciplinary team at the Women s Center is dedicated to the well-being of each individual, and they meet together continually to discuss the progress and best options for every patient combining their skills and expertise for a truly integrated approach to treatment. 9

MEN S CENTER Forging the Foundation for a Healthier, Happier Life Our men s program curriculum provides a useful framework in which each individual can develop functional, strength-based skill sets. Throughout the treatment process, men are prepared to overcome challenges and to respond to life with new coping skills and healthy behaviors. Our multi-faceted program paves the way for them to achieve and sustain longterm healing from co-occurring disorders. The Men s Center at Michael s House is a place where men can find solid ground in recovery. Our Program at the Men s Center The program at the Michael s House Men s Center includes a variety of sessions and groups. Residents can participate in a Dialectical Behavior Therapy group, process groups, an LGBT process group, two individual therapy sessions per week, educational groups, relapse prevention planning, adventure activities and a restorative sleep program. During treatment at the Men s Center, residents may also take part in some of the therapeutic and creative elements available in our program. These include activities such as yoga, meditation, creative arts and off-site gym access (contingent upon the individual s treatment level). While participating in different groups and taking time for recreation during our program, men can work on their personal recovery and focus on restructuring their lives. 10

FAMILY PROGRAM weekends Michael s House believes in the healing of family relationships. Michael s House staff is committed to providing patients with a variety of tools, experiences and knowledge related to substance abuse and mental health recovery. Providing a three-day intensive family program is one way for families, partners and loved ones to share in this experience. This program enables families and supportive others to begin or continue in the healing process through validation, education and support. Psychoeducational and skill-building tools are provided in the following areas: Better understanding of the experience of the person suffering from addiction or a dual diagnosis. Learning tools for optimal communication, such as how to respond, versus react, and not fall into unhealthy patterns. Identifying and processing feelings of shame, guilt, fear, anger and resentment. Learning how to take responsibility for oneself and not taking on the emotions of the addicted individual. Identifying healthy and unhealthy interactions within a family system in order to improve wellness. Identifying codependent behaviors, including denial, enabling, rescuing & minimizing. Defining and understanding the recovery process for the patient and family. Understanding relapse. Formulating an aftercare plan. Often, family members, partners and loved ones are impacted by the destructive cycle of addiction and other disorders such as depression or anxiety. Feelings of hurt, anger, confusion, frustration and betrayal are a few emotions that family members frequently experience. The family program provides a safe space to access these feelings with a focus on moving toward emotional growth and healing. 11

SPECIAL FEATURES Lgbt Track Different populations have different needs. In our track for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, our goal is to address both the external and internalized oppression that can often present barriers to an LGBT individual s recovery. Each week, participants have the option to attend two LGBT-themed groups: one process group and one group with an educational focus. Supportive Sleep Program Many individuals enter treatment with disruptions in sleep patterns and have difficulty sleeping naturally due to these issues. In the early stages of treatment, medication may be used to help patients get the sleep their bodies need to heal, but natural methods are always preferred. Our sleep program uses a variety of simple tools to encourage sleep and help patients rest. Heroes in Recovery Journey Boxes Upon entering treatment, each patient receives a Heroes in Recovery Journey Box, which is simply a repository for mementoes that are significant to an individual s path to recovery. Notes from staff members, personal observations, meaningful quotations, a stone from a hike or a shell from a beach trip each item tells a piece of the story, charting a return to health and wholeness. A Heroes box ensures that each person takes the time to commemorate and celebrate the process of recovery. 14

OUR EVIDENCE-BASED CONTINUUM OF CARE Michael s House has a commitment to long-term recovery, which is why we encourage patients to continue their treatment journey for 90 days or more, utilizing outpatient and sober living resources after residential care. Research has shown that patients who continue in treatment for longer periods of time have more sustainable recovery outcomes than those who do not. Nearby Michael s House Outpatient Center is the ideal place to transition out of residential treatment while continuing the work of recovery in a holistic, restorative outpatient setting. What Does Research Say About Staying in Treatment Longer? Research from a variety of sources confirms that length of stay in substance abuse treatment is a strong predictor of treatment outcomes, with longer lengths of stay in treatment associated with lower post-treatment substance use rates. (1) In addition, longer periods of treatment engagement are associated with lower readmission rates. (2) In the 90s, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) initiated a series of Drug Abuse Treatment Outcomes Studies (DATOS) to track treatment outcomes in the US. In 1997, one DATOS evaluation, Treatment Retention and Follow-Up Outcomes, (3) revealed the following: The length of time clients stayed in treatment was directly related to improvements in follow-up outcomes, replicating findings from previous national treatment evaluations (DARP and TOPS). (4) Patients who stayed in treatment for 90 days or longer had significantly better follow-up outcomes on a variety of criteria than those who stayed for less than 90 days. Those who had stayed in treatment for 90 days or more had statistically significant differences in outcomes than those who stayed for shorter periods of time. In the study, these differences were seen in weekly cocaine use (36% vs 14%), heavy alcohol use (31% vs 11%), predatory illegal acts (23% vs 12%), sex-related HIV/AIDS risks (33% vs 26%), and unemployment on a full-time job (86% vs 71%). Michael s House provides an evidence-based rehabilitation program that is focused on motivation, engagement and effective therapies for sustainable recovery.
