On a journey with the Royal Academy of Music 17: Out & about: 18: 60 Seconds with a Governor The last few years have seen some big changes at CNWL: In 2011 we became responsible for community health services in Hillingdon and Camden, and in 2012 we achieved new contracts in learning disabilities in north London and prison healthcare across the south east of England. Now, in 2013 we become responsible mental health and community services in Milton Keynes (see page 4). This means community health services will soon account for nearly 40% of our annual revenue, meaning the days of providing only mental health services are long gone. As set out in our annual business plan (see page 8) we see the future of healthcare being provided in the community where possible. Of course, people will always need hospital care, but with excellent community care we hope to prevent unnecessary admissions and re-admissions so people can remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. Read more about some of the recent changes and our plans for 2013/14 in the pages of this magazine. A new name? Given CNWL services are increasingly being delivered outside of the central and north west London area, the Board has made a commitment to changing the name of the organisation, in order to become more relevant to our wider stakeholder groups. We will of course keep all members informed if and when these conversations progress. If you have any suggestions or concerns about these plans, please communications.cnwl@nhs.net New CNWL website Towards the end of last year we launched a new website for CNWL, which members, Governors, service users and carers helped create. The new site better reflects the organisation as it now is, and includes an up-to-date list of CNWL services. There are also other tools to provide better information to the public, such as a new blog with comment and opinion from our staff called In Conversation. Please check it out at and if you have any suggestions or comments communications. cnwl@nhs.net. We will continue to develop this website so appreciate any feedback. 2 Inview Inview 3

Milton Keynes central! December 2012 saw the exciting news that we had been successful in our proposal to integrate with Milton Keynes Community Health Services (MKCHS). This development supports our plans to grow and branch out to new locations, outside of our core London area. The services will transfer to CNWL by 1 April 2013, subject to all necessary regulations and approvals being met. Chief Executive Claire Murdoch expressed her delight at the development, saying: This is wonderful news for CNWL and we are looking forward to working with our new colleagues from Milton Keynes Community Health Services and welcoming them into the CNWL family. Our ambitious growth strategy supports CNWL in maintaining our position as a key provider of local health services. It also enables our teams to really drive quality and innovation as they learn from each other and develop best practice models of care across the areas we serve. Over the next few weeks we will start looking to recruit new members in Milton Keynes to represent these communities on the Council of Governors. Understanding MKCHS Milton Keynes Community Health Services provide community physical health, mental health and learning disability and prison services across Milton Keynes. They also provide specialist dental services across Buckinghamshire. Its Managing Director is Cathy Walker. Their HQ base is on the Milton Keynes Hospital site. For more information visit FACT BOX > 1,200 staff > 60 million annual turnover > 40 different community health care services > Services are delivered from 25 sites, but care is mostly provided in the community, within people s own homes > Milton Keynes is just 30 minutes from London by train 4 Inview Inview 5

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust Crisis Card Out-of-Hours Urgent Advice Line: Improving help in crisis On 25 February 2013 we launched our new out-of-hours Urgent Advice Line, which replaced the service provided by borough crisis lines. The line provides rapid access to skilled and experienced clinicians at nights and weekends. New crisis cards will be provided to mental health and learning disability service users with details of the service provided. Urgent Advice Line: Mon-Fri 5pm-8am, weekends and bank holidays To find out more visit Our next members event, taking place on 11 March 2013, takes a look at the importance of psychological therapies for the treatment of common mental illness, such as anxiety or depression. Member events: An introduction to psychological therapies There is a national initiative called Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), which aims to ensure this service is available in every area. CNWL currently provides IAPT services in five London boroughs: Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Brent, Harrow and Hillingdon. The event will give a description of the IAPT services provided by CNWL, give examples of service user and GP feedback and will include discussions about improvements and developments that may be beneficial. IAPT Members Event, 5.30pm, 11 March 2013 CNWL Trust HQ, Stephenson House 75 Hampstead Road, London NW1 2PL If you would like to attend please RSVP to Christine Baldwinson, Trust Secretary on christine.baldwinson@nhs.net or Inview Inview 7

A plan for the future The achievement of securing the Milton Keynes contract will see our annual revenue grow to 420m. In the Trust s business plan, which Governors help to set each year, we set out a clear strategy for growth, so we could reduce the costs associated with running the organisation and reinvest as much as possible in improved front-line care. We see this strategy as essential for surviving the current economic difficulties and we see more opportunities to grow in the coming years. 8 Inview Here are some examples of improvement projects that have been funded through business savings: In Hillingdon the Child Development Centre has relocated to a refurbished centre that provides a hugely improved environment for parents and children. In Westminster, community mental health services have moved to two new hubs in the north and south of the borough. The facilities are excellent and the teams also benefit from being able to work together. The Max Glatt Inpatient Detox Service has moved from Ealing Hospital to a refurbished site next to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In Camden the Margaret Pyke Sexual Health Centre is moving to a new central location with refurbished facilities. The benefits of growth, however, are not just financial or tangible. We feel that community care is not well understood in central Government compared to hospital or GP care. We, therefore, hope to become an influential organisation that is well regarded for high quality community healthcare. We want to help policy leaders better understand these services and help drive the direction of community services in the future. We are already starting to be seen in this way as many of our senior clinicians have been selected for national advisory roles in addictions, sexual health, mental health and nursing. These important meetings with leaders in health will help us to educate and inform national health policies that make real improvements to people s lives. What s next? We will be looking out for new opportunities during 2013 and will keep members up-to-date with any developments. Read more about the CNWL business plan on our website Refurbished Max Glatt Inpatient Detox Service Inview 9

Carers: we want your help! Celebrating excellence Are you a carer of someone who accesses CNWL services? Would you like to help improve the support available to other carers like you? We re conducting a mystery shopping programme over the next few months to understand more about carers views of our services and how we can improve the support available. All you would need to do is complete a feedback form after your next visit to services, which would gather opinions on factors such as: access to information, the helpfulness of staff or how you found the facilities on your visit. If you are interested in taking part, or would like more information on this programme please contact Chris Bumstead, Head of Patient and Public Involvement on or chris.bumstead@nhs.net. In December we held our fourth annual staff awards: The Annual Gem Awards The memorable ceremony recognised CNWL staff who have been highlighted as exceptional by their own colleagues, and a panel of judges. The largest ever number of nominations was received across the seven award categories. The judging panel, which included Governors, had the extremely difficult task of selecting winners as the standard of entries was extremely high, especially in the team of the year category which received an overwhelming 33 nominations. The Team of the Year Award was revealed with a roaring applause as Hillingdon Safeguarding Children Team collected their award. Team Manager Lisa Crawshaw, said of the achievement: When time is short we often neglect to say a big thank you to the people who put so much Hillingdon Safeguarding Children Team effort into making sure staff are well trained, supported and that robust processes exist for all areas of safeguarding children. We are generally a silent team we don t stand out when things go well. I m so happy this team won. For a full list of winners please visit 10 Inview Inview 11

Health & Social care Act Last year the new Health and Social Care Act 2012 was passed in Parliament. This new Act is part of the national NHS Reforms and sets out a number of changes to the way health and social care services will be delivered. The Department of Health say these changes are essential to weather the NHS from the toughest few years it has ever faced. While we agree that change is needed to ensure enough money is still available to deliver high quality patient care, we also have concerns about some of the proposals. Opposite we explain three key point of the act that will affect CNWL: Read more about the act at Clinically-led commissioning The responsibility for deciding what health services are needed in a particular area will be handed to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), which will be led by local GPs. While this provides more influence to health professionals over services that meet local needs, we have concerns that general health professionals do not have sufficient in-depth knowledge to commission specialist services such as mental healthcare, especially regarding complex conditions. Our Chief Executive, Claire Murdoch, discussed this issue on BBC Radio 4 back in July Increased competition in the market place The Act enables competition amongst health service providers, which means private health companies can now bid for NHS contracts. We have already begun to see the impact of this change in our addiction services, where we have lost contracts in west London to non-nhs providers. While we understand that competition will make sure NHS organisations focus on quality, cost effective services, this also means less involvement with local communities. As an NHS Foundation Trust, we are accountable to our local communities through you, our members. This is an important link with local people that private organisations do not have. New focus on public health We support the Act s new focus on the general health and wellbeing of people and the aim to prevent future health problems. This includes support such as advice on diet, fitness and giving up smoking. In the past, public health services were provided by NHS Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), however the Act sets out that this duty will be passed to local authorities, supported by local Health and Wellbeing Boards. Turn to the next page to read more about how we will be working with the Health and Wellbeing Boards to improve health and wellbeing in our areas. 12 Inview Inview 13

Westminster Brent Camden Explaining Health & Wellbeing Boards Health and Wellbeing Boards are local forums where key leaders from health and social care services will work together to improve the health and wellbeing of their local population and reduce health inequalities. As a result, patients and the public should experience more joined-up services from the NHS and local Councils. The Boards, which formally come into effect in April 2013, have already started to be established and for CNWL s core areas they will be working towards some of the following priorities: More local information about the Health and Wellbeing Boards in your area and their strategy for improving the health in your community can be found on each of the Councils websites. Improving the environment for early years and child development Moving care closer to home Kensington & Chelsea Integrated services Childhood obesity Drugs and alcohol/dual diagnosis (mental health diagnosis combined with an addiction) Giving every child the best start in life Helping vulnerable families Empowering communities to take better care of themselves Hillingdon Prevention and early intervention Integrated services Creating a positive experience of care Helping families with multiple needs and vulnerable children Supporting action on weight management and active living Harrow Long-term conditions Poverty Supporting parents and the community to protect children Dementia. 14 Inview Inview 15

On a journey with the Royal Academy of Music Out & about: What have CNWL Governors been up to recently? Service users with dementia, their carers and staff from the Westminster Memory Service have worked with students from the Royal Academy of Music to compose a piece of music that represents a journey. The project has helped the Academy bring music into the community, while enabling service users and carers to explore and share memories and feelings. The group have relived the excitement of a journey taken by a couple in the group. They once owned a beautiful vivid green jaguar which they drove from London to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Inview magazine was invited to join the group, called Music in Thought in their last session to hear the final composition. As percussion instruments were passed around the group, Royal Academy students set the scene with a trombone, flute and viola, making sounds of revving engines combined with the excitement of our impending journey. The journey sees us passing waterfalls and getting stuck in traffic jams, before turning a corner to see the Coast on the horizon! Read more about the visit at It s the little things that make the difference Carer, Music in Thought group Cathy Wield, Service User Governor On 10 December 2012 I went to the House of Commons to the official premiere of a film called U Can Cope at the invitation of Madeleine Moon MP and the U Can Cope Partners. This short film was commissioned by Open Minds Alliance CIC, Samaritans, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Southwick Media Consultancy for World Suicide Prevention Day which took place on 10 September last year. The film features the stories of three survivors of suicide and suicidal thoughts, including myself, and is there to promote three important messages: 1. Anyone can experience suicidal thoughts 2. There is always hope 3. There is always help It has been endorsed by many and varied organisations including the National Advisory Group on Suicide and Self-harm Prevention, the Welsh Government, National Suicide Research Foundation, NHS Research Institute, University College Cork and the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, to name a few. The film is being successfully used as a training tool for staff in a number of different organisations as well as being used to bring hope to those who may experience suicidal ideation. A trailer of the film has even been used in cinemas to advertise this to the general public. The film can be viewed on the Samaritans website or via the following direct link: vimeo.com/m/ Inview Inview 17

60 seconds with a Governor: Cathy Wield, Service User Governor How long have you been a Governor at CNWL? Just over a year. Why did you become a Governor? I was very surprised to find myself elected as when I put myself forward, I had no experience of being a Governor. I thought that my experience of being treated as a patient by several different mental health services and also working as a doctor put me in a good place to understand the needs of service users. I have written two books (about my illness in part), to combat the stigma that those with mental illness come across and I wanted to champion the no-stigma attitude as a Governor. What do you hope to achieve as a Governor? I want to speak on behalf of service users who haven t always been treated well by mental health services, and help to bring improvements to the system. What have been your experiences so far? I have found that the Trust Board has a very good attitude, are open to new ideas and want to improve services. I took part, alongside staff from the Trust in the CNWL Recovery College Recovery & Social Inclusion course and saw first hand how attitudes towards mental illnesses are changing for the better. What are your interests outside of CNWL? I am an active member of my local church. I look after my grandson and I do some voluntary work for a publisher. I am now preparing to return to work after a long absence due to depression. What do you think about the benefits of having Governors? Governors hold the Trust to account over what they do and the way they do things. It is important that governors are able to do this so the way the Trust works is available to scrutiny. This includes what they spend money on and plans for the future. We are not a bunch of yes men, but neither do we withhold our thanks for the good things that are happening within the Trust. Do you have any advice for prospective Governors? If you want to be elected as a Governor, it is important that you prepare yourself to get stuck in, come to meetings, have your say but be constructive in any criticisms you may have. If you would like to contact Cathy with any views please governors.cnwl@nhs.net Get involved: Research Are you a service user of CNWL services and would like to get involved in research projects? The Trust is keen involve service user members in the planning of research projects. This would involve attending meetings and reviewing documents to ensure research projects are relevant to the needs of service users. Any travel costs will be paid. For more information please contact Chris Bumstead, Head of Patient and Public Involvement on chris.bumstead@nhs.net or Inview
