Introducing the Trust Specialist mental healthcare We are South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). Locally, we deliver mental health and substance misuse services for people living in the London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich. We also provide a broad range of specialist mental health services for individuals all over the UK and beyond. As well as being recognised for our care and treatment, we have a strong partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry (King s College London), which is a major international research institute. South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is part of King s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), a pioneering collaboration with King s College London, Guy s and St Thomas, King s College Hospital. King s Health Partners brings together an unrivalled range and depth of clinical and research expertise, spanning both physical and mental health. Our combined strengths will drive improvements in care for patients, allowing them to benefit from breakthroughs in medical science and receive leading edge treatment, at the earliest possible opportunity. 2 A truly unique organisation Excellence in treatment, research and training There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. Our scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training. Service users benefit from the highest level of care; research teams explore new and better treatments; and in-house training facilities pass on the latest knowledge and skills to staff members. Close relationships between these three faculties ensure that lessons learned from patient contact and research can be translated into effective treatment, benefiting people locally, nationally and internationally. 2
What we re looking at now is a broad range of treatments being provided at a much earlier stage of illness. That s not only medication, but psychology services, psychosocial interventions such as helping people get back to work and providing carers with much better information and support. Dr Paddy Power Honorary Senior Lecturer, Institute of Psychiatry Living life to the full Promoting mental health and wellbeing We are increasingly focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing rather than simply responding to mental illness. Our philosophy of care is the recovery model. We provide treatment that helps people get well and stay well, so they can achieve their full potential. Above all, we believe change is possible, no matter how long someone has had a mental health problem, or how much this has changed their life. Our integrated adult services make it possible for us to address both an individual s mental health and social care needs. In particular, we are focusing more on early intervention: getting help to people sooner and supporting them at an earlier stage in their lives especially younger people. Our work is about changing lives, not just for individuals, but in partnership with them. 3
For the first time people listened to me and gradually I was able to open up. I got support from the unit s social worker to help me apply for benefits and a place to live when I was ready to leave. I m now engaged, have qualified to become a volunteer at the Bethlem, and been on a computer training course. Now I can give something back to society. Kim Field Ex service user Our heritage A long history of treating mental illness Over the course of its history, Bethlem developed a commitment to treating patients with acute rather than chronic conditions. Its admission criteria excluded patients with unfavourable prognoses and there was a policy of discharging almost all patients who had remained uncured after a year. In 1919, an outpatient clinic for voluntary patients was opened the first of its kind in the UK. Bethlem Royal Hospital The history of South London and Maudsley dates back to 1247, when a former Sheriff of the City of London founded the Priory of St Mary of Bethlehem as a dedicated hospice for the distressed poor of the City of London. The oldest psychiatric institution in the world, its original location was in Bishopsgate (near Liverpool Street Station today). Since then, the hospital has relocated three times: to Moorfields (now Finsbury Circus) in 1676, St George s Fields (now the Imperial War Museum) in 1815, and finally Beckenham, south east London in
The Maudsley and Institute of Psychiatry The Maudsley was the brainchild of the psychiatrist Henry Maudsley, a leading psychiatrist of the early 20th century. In 1907, Maudsley offered 30,000 (over 1.8m in today s money) to the London County Council to establish a fitly equipped hospital for mental diseases. The proposal focused on the idea that individuals with mental illnesses should be helped to get better, rather than removed from society. He hoped to tackle the stigma associated with the asylums of the day and also believed in research and specialist training as a robust foundation for any work. South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust South London and Maudsley NHS Trust was formed in April Seven years later, in 2006, it became the 50th NHS Foundation Trust under the Health and Social Care [Community Health and Standards] Act Today, the Trust s services are delivered from a host of sites small and large, new and old. The Maudsley s hospital buildings were completed by 1915, though their doors were only opened to the general public in 1923, after World War I. The next year, the hospital s medical school was recognised as a postgraduate school of the University of London. In 1948, when the National Health Service (NHS) was introduced, the Bethlem Royal Hospital and Maudsley Hospital were merged to form a postgraduate psychiatric teaching hospital. At the same time, Maudsley s medical school became the Institute of Psychiatry. The National Psychosis Unit definitely saved Kim s life and probably mine, as we had both more or less given up. Bethlem was our last hope... I now have my lovely daughter back. Judith Field Mother and carer 5
Welcome to our corner of the world SLaM provides clinical services in seven London boroughs, with a combined population of nearly 2 million people, from the centre of London to the outer suburbs, covering an area of 168 square miles, rich in culture, diversity and architecture. Bounded by the River Thames to the north and M25 to the south, the area is well served by public transport, including the tube and tram networks. The East London Line extension has given many parts of Croydon and Bromley access to the tube network and the Thameslink 2000 rail expansion programme will see most of the area we cover, linked by high speed rail across London and the South of England. Our resources Care and treatment The largest portfolio of mental healthcare in the UK The Trust offers the most extensive portfolio of mental healthcare in the UK. We deliver mental health and substance misuse services for people living in the London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bromley, Greenwich and Bexley. We also offer specialist services to people across the UK and beyond. We provide inpatient care at Bethlem Royal Hospital, Maudsley Hospital, Lambeth Hospital in addition to over 180 communitybased sites across South London. We also deliver services through Guy s Hospital, St Thomas Hospital, King s College Hospital and the Ladywell Unit at University Hospital Lewisham. 6
Forensic services We provide a comprehensive range of forensic services including River House, an 89-bed, six ward, medium secure unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital, which opened in 2008 as the Trust s largest single building development since the construction of the Bethlem site in National services The Trust provides secondary and tertiary services that benefit people all over the UK, and many of these services are unique to the NHS. Key areas of care and treatment include child and adolescent mental health, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders and trauma, behavioural issues and genetics, brain injury, chronic fatigue, eating disorders, neuropsychiatry, psychosis, self-harm and perinatal care. For a detailed list of Trust services, visit 7
I think the big difference in the future is going to be the way in which science is developing and how we re going to be able to put that into practice. How we can bring the new scientific developments in genetics, proteomics and imaging to find ways of screening, early detection and early treatment, perhaps even prevention of some of the mental illnesses that are now so common. Stuart Bell Chief Executive Research Developing new and improved treatments The Trust works closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, King s College London. The partnership brings clinicians and scientists together. Clinicians work informs our research programme as research is geared to real-life clinical problems and scientific research, in turn, informs better clinical work. The Trust has particular research strengths in neuroscience, psychiatry and mental health, with complementary disciplines like medical and molecular genetics, public health sciences and imaging. For more information on research specialities, visit 8
One of the real benefits we have at the Institute of Psychiatry is being next to the Maudsley Hospital and being part of the whole South London and Maudsley Trust. And, of course that gives us the real opportunity to do clinically-rooted research and to have access to patients and for them to actually benefit from the sort of things that we re doing. Professor Peter McGuffin Dean and Head of School, Institute of Psychiatry, King s College London Training Putting new treatments into practice We believe it s vital for our staff to be up to date with the newest mental health developments and initiatives, as well as fully competent in all aspects of patient safety. The Trust has links with major training institutions, including King s College London and Southbank and Greenwich Universities. These facilities allow us to educate staff so they can deliver new and improved treatments, translating them quickly and meaningfully into everyday care. Our innovative Academic Health Sciences Centre is also allowing us to build for the future offering career development that ensure staff members become the future leaders in clinical and non-clinical services. Training styles Courses are available in a range of areas, including continual professional development, administration skill development, management and leadership skills, academic education, and research experiences and degrees. As well as classroom teaching, the Trust offers coaching, mentoring, shadowing, e-learning, self-directed study, blended learning, learning sets, and service user and carer-led training. 9
Working at the Trust I work at the Lishman Unit with the brain injury team. We work through everyday tasks with service users and with their family to structure their care. I like that I can work with people doing things that are very meaningful for them, it s very rewarding. Helen Jinadu Occupational Therapist Your career Join a diverse team of talented individuals The Trust employs around 5,200 people. It is a diverse team of talented individuals, spanning a wide range of specialities and benefiting from many world-leading healthcare experts. We deliver more than training experiences each year, providing an extensive range of learning opportunities. Staff can benefit from exceptional professional development opportunities. In addition, our working relationship with the Institute of Psychiatry allows those working at the Trust to get involved in academic research. Continuing professional development The Trust offers opportunities for lifelong learning through mentoring, secondments, taught courses and bursaries for clinical development programmes. We are committed to helping to develop the people that come to work with us. We know that the Trust can only be as good as the people who work here. And the people who work here can only be as good as the degree to which the Trust values them. That s why we really welcome and value people so highly. In short, if you ve got what it takes we d be delighted for you to come and work with us. 10
I love my job because it s fulfilling. I see people come in acutely unwell and get nursed back to being able to cope with their condition and be discharged home. Evadine Kalifunwa Staff nurse Flexible working A wide range of flexible working options are available to support work-home life balance. This includes part-time and termtime working, job sharing, annualised hours and flexible retirement. The Trust offers support on all aspects of childcare, from onsite nurseries and help to find childcare providers, to the latest information on vouchers and tax credits. Advice and assistance on finding suitable accommodation is also available. Support and equality The Trust meets Improving Working Lives Practice Plus accreditation standards, which means we are always aiming to offer greater levels of support and flexibility in the workplace and create an environment where staff are treated fairly and feel involved. We have an established Disability Equality Scheme and we are also a member of the Mindful Employer Initiative Want to know more? Visit our website at: for more information. 11
