2 Page 2 BRIEFLY SPEAKING PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Welcome to November Junior Leaguers! This month is a time to celebrate what you are thankful for. I am so thankful to be part of this organization. I am thankful for the development opportunities that the Junior League has given me, and I am thankful for the lifelong friends I have made. Last month we gathered at the Museum of Labor and Industry, where we were taken on a docent led tour of the exhibits. It was a wonderful way to learn about the history of our community. AJLI conference guest speaker Laura Schwartz and JLY President Heather Elder. Laura is a former White House event coordinator and spoke about becoming an effective leader. Most recently, our League had the chance to volunteer at the Dorothy Day House in Youngstown. We were able to prepare and serve a hot meal to less fortunate people in our community. We had such a great turnout of women who took the time to volunteer. We had Sustainers, Actives and Provisionals all represented at the facility. Later this month, our League will meet up with several other Ohio Leagues for a Leadership Development Conference. We will also be gathering together for an all League social towards the end of the month. I am looking forward to all the exciting opportunities this month and I hope to see you all there. Wishing you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Heather Elder Holiday Social and Donation Our Holiday Social will take place this year on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the Blue Wolf in Boardman. We will be collecting grocery store gift cards to donate to The Piggyback Foundation. Please bring your gift cards to the event. If you cannot attend but would still like to donate to this worthy cause please send your giftcard or donation to: Mercia Stevens 2236 Parkway Dr. Poland, OH 44514
3 Page 3 Volume 14, Issue 3 Sustainers Corner Inspiring, Invested, Involved Those adjectives described my impression of JLY Sustainers when I was a Provisional nine years ago. As my involvement in the League grew, this opinion was reinforced. I am happy to introduce the Sustainer Council: JLY Committee Sustainer Representative Fund Development Marketing Membership Nominating Provisional Training & Education Research & Development Sustainer Rep to the Board Michele Merkle Leah Wilson Danielle Surko Debbie Liptak Carolyn Korenic Anna Aey (Not active this League year) Susan Stewart Thank you, Sustainers, for being involved with the committees this League year! I would like to thank new Sustainer, Tara Mady, for serving as Co-Sustainer Representative to the Marketing Committee. I hope to find other Sustainers who will serve in a similar role to help guide the committee chairs, many of whom are first year Actives. Mark your calendar for a Sustainer Celebration of the Season to be held Sunday, November 20, 12:00 noon at the Youngstown Country Club. There will be a soup and salad bar luncheon for $15/person. Invitations will be in the mail soon. JLY leaders will talk about new trends, new Sustainers will be welcomed and Provisionals will be introduced. Susan
