3 Message from the President Thank you for giving me a place to rest, regain, and have. The women at the home are great. Bless all of them. This past year has flown by quickly with the level of activity at WIN House! The accomplishments of WIN House staff and Board during this time are many and varied, with the following key highlights: Emergency shelter and support services were provided to over 299 women and 413 children in need. This would not be possible without our WIN staff who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the women and children who take refuge in our shelters 24/7. Successful operations of Carol s House, our third shelter which reopened in November Carol s House provides specialized and longer term support to immigrant and trafficked women fleeing domestic violence. Receipt of additional Human Services Funding to enhance the safety and security of the women and children we support. Our Executive Director Tess Gordey completed her first year with WIN House and added much value to our organization during this time. She has demonstrated outstanding ability in supporting the board in areas of policy development and community engagement and her community collaboration endeavors have included enhancing frontline service delivery, research, advocacy, education, public awareness and policy development. Investment in our most important asset, our people, through development of an annual staff retreat and ongoing employee training. The Board of Directors refreshed our 3 year strategic plan to provide continued direction and guidance for our organization as we look to the future. These accomplishments would not be possible without the individuals, businesses, and organizations who donated time, money, and in-kind goods to WIN House. On behalf of WIN House staff and the Board, I would like to give a sincere and heartfelt thank you for your outstanding continued support for this important work in our community. As we close out this year, we say thank you and a fond farewell to our Board members leaving us including Nicole Johnston, Michelle Malin, Katrina Rowe, and Lance Beswick. Lance was our Board President in 2015/2016 and Katrina in 2014/2015. The commitment, guidance and support all these individuals provided during their terms on the Board is recognized and they will be missed. The year ahead will be exciting. We are thrilled to launch our first Inaugural Gala, Under the Umbrella, this September. This event promises to be an entertaining and fun filled evening to raise funds in support of WIN House. Also coming up soon is the launch of new branding for WIN House. It is hopeful, impactful and sure to get your attention so stay tuned! Ann Marie Heffernan, President Edmonton Women s Shelter Ltd. Board of Directors 04 winhouse.org Women Served: 299 Children Served: 413 Helpline Calls Received: 2560 Annual Report
4 Message from the Executive Director Congratulations to the staff of WIN House for making such a positive difference in the lives of so many women and children in need. Their wisdom and expertise, combined with our fortune in having a strategically driven and dedicated Board of Directors, has resulted in a very rewarding year. Over the past 12 months, we welcomed 299 women and 413 children into our shelters and also provided services on an outreach basis. Our newest facility, Carol s House, has been operating at full capacity for just over two years now, allowing us to even better serve the specialized needs of immigrant, refugee and human trafficked families. In alignment with our strategic plan, we created opportunities for investment in our human resources by providing relevant training on trauma informed practice, cultural competency and emotional wellbeing in the workplace. For the first time in our 48 year history, employees were also able to partake in an overnight team building retreat, strengthening our collaborate efforts in providing quality services to women and children impacted by domestic violence. WIN House has demonstrated great success toward community engagement, enhanced policy development and invaluable data collection for informing research and best practices. These endeavors, alongside frontline practices of helping families meet their basic needs, plan for their safety, learn of their rights, and navigate through healthy options, all build non-violent futures. We continue to be extremely grateful for the incredible community support we receive throughout each year. Donors, volunteers and community service partners all assist us in achieving our mission of furthering non-violent relationships and environments. We appreciate the time and commitment that our supporters provided and I hope we can reduce the struggles that families face even more in the next year to come. We rely on Alberta Human Services for a significant portion of our funding and we were pleased to have benefited from additional funding this year for Intensive Case Managers and Child Trauma Counselling. These additions have greatly improved our capacity to serve even more families, particularly on an outreach basis. WIN House remains committed to help women and children break down the cycle of violence, as well as to the ongoing growth and stability of our organization. I look forward to our important community work together in the upcoming year. About WIN House WIN House is a non-profit agency operating three shelters, WIN I, WIN II and Carol s House. The WIN Houses are for women with or without children who are fleeing domestic violence. In the beginning, we were a small group of concerned citizens who met in 1968 to consider the growing problem of homeless women in Edmonton. In 1970, we opened an overnight emergency shelter in the basement of All Saints Cathedral. On September 26, 1973, Edmonton Women s Shelter was incorporated. Nearly five decades later, WIN House has become Edmonton s largest charitable non-profit of its kind. WIN I opened in 1978 and WIN II in Finally, in 2010, Carol s House was opened to newcomer women and after a brief closure for a year, was reopened in The shelters operate 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Tess Gordey, MSW, RSW Executive Director WIN House Our dedicated staff spent almost 400 hours providing information, emotional support, and referrals to women 06 winhouse.org calling the Helpline in the fiscal year. 6 Katharine s Story Katharine had two daughters with her first husband. Katharine s husband was an alcoholic, which caused strife in their marriage. When her oldest daughter told her that daddy was touching her, she took her children and left. Once her daughters grew up, she fell in love with someone she met in the community. While the marriage was happy at the start, over time it began to deteriorate. Her husband began to hide her medication, and utter death threats at her. Katharine was convinced that her husband would try Soon after, Katharine informed our Outreach worker that she found her to kill her if she stayed with him, so she chose to come to WIN House. own apartment. While she loved her new apartment, she did not have any Katharine appears to be more relaxed now that she has been living away from her husband. furniture or household items. To remedy this, her Outreach Worker was able to set her up with a Household package, and get it delivered to Katharine s new home. Katharine was set up with dishes, cutlery, quilts, sheets, and other basic household items. Katharine s main goals were to find her own home. WIN House was able to advocate on her behalf, and after some time and support Katharine was admitted to a Seniors Safe Housing Project. While she was very happy there, She feels she is now in a much better place than a few months ago, and thanks WIN House for all the support. she continued to seek more stable housing. 10 winhouse.org * Quotes are pulled from Outreach Case Notes.
