From my window I can t believe my year as Governor is close to coming to an end. It has been a wonderful year especially the State Convention which was May 19,20,and 21 st. It was a wonderful weekend. I want to thank Lion Sharon Peska and SST Lion Michelle Faris and the Committee for the wonderful job. Another year of fun for the Convention. Friday night we had the Follies with wonderful entertainment and delightful hospitality rooms to follow. Saturday we had our 1 st Plenary session followed by some seminar and training for the International Convention, which by the way is right around the corner. There is still time to make your reservations. It is right in our own backyards. There won t be on closer than the 100 th Anniversary of the Lions Clubs International Convention. Our 2 nd International Vice President Lion Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir and her spouse PID Dr. Jon Thorsteinsson were our guests for the weekend and what a wonderful woman and spouse. She will be our first Woman International President in She spoke at the first Plenary session and then we had out voting for the resolutions. There were 2 resolutions for the Lions of Illinois Foundation and 3 resolutions for the Lions of Illinois Constitution. All of them passed. Then on to the Banquet and Awards dinner. Our International Guest Gudrun spoke about her country and their customs. She explained why her husbands name is different than hers. How her Lions in Iceland do things a little different than the United States. A lot of changes will be taking place this coming year so watch for all of the announcements. Then for our awards. I want to Congratulate PDG Lion John (OB) O Brien on receiving the President s Award and 2 nd VDGE Joe Vinyard on receiving the Leadership Award. They are both very deserving for these awards. After this wonderful dinner we retired to the hospitality rooms again. I want to thank 1 st VDGE Lori Linn and Lion Irene Leopold and their spouses Doug and Brian for doing a wonderful job with the hospitality room. Plus they were Sergeant of Arms. What a tiring weekend they had. I truly appreciate all of their hard work. And of course our special bartender PDG Lion Clyde Gaffney who gladly helped them and believe me they were busy. This year we did something different and had our 2nd Plenary session after the Lions of Illinois Foundation Breakfast. The final reports were given and the announcement of the Council State Committee Chairperson. It was a wonderful convention and very nice. The Lions of Illinois Foundation Breakfast was very nice. It was well attended and we had some local Lions win on the Sight and Sound Sweepstakes. They were PDG George Durbin, Lion Steve Tuftie both from Earlville and Mick Kozy from Bolingbrook. I want to thank all of our District Lions that helped on Committees at the convention. You all did a wonderful job and I truly appreciate you taking on the responsibility for these jobs. Thank you all for supporting me this year and I look forward to DGE John Joseph stepping up to the plate. I will say more on that in my final Governor article next month. Since the merger we have had a great team of Governors that have served for the first three years. Thank you all for a job well done. Your Governor, Lion Pat Gaffney Fritz1@mediacombb.net 1

MUSINGS FROM THE DGE Lion John Joseph Honiotes My Fellow 1-BK Lions, A thief in Paris planned to steal some Paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas. When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, Monsieur that is the reason I stole the paintings! I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh. See if you have De Gaulle to tell this to someone else... I used it because I figured I had nothing Toulouse. In the May Newsletter to the District I asked that your club hold the election of your club officers for as soon as possible if you hadn t already. The next step was to have your Secretary submit those names to International. To date (May 27) only 48 clubs have done this. Once your slate of officers has been decided, it is very important that have your club Secretary submit those names to International through My-LCI. International would have liked to have had that information by mid-may. And when submitting those names, please name a Membership Chair and a LCIF Coordinator when electing your officers. The delay in submitting those officers also means a delay in getting our District directory put together. We need the names of the Presidents and Secretaries for our new Club directory. Be sure to submit any changes in street address, phone numbers, address, etc. Please be sure to list addresses for all officers. Once your club officers for the new year are in place, please encourage them to attend the OFFICER TRAINING taking place on June 17 th (see flyer and agenda in this issue). The training is being offered at three locations: Morris Eagles Hall Bradley Quality Inn Hudson Fire Station 120 Liberty St. 800 N Kinzie Ave 502 N Broadway St Morris, IL Bradley, IL Hudson, IL While the current officers in your club are a great teaching tool for your new officers, attending the training gives an additional perspective on their duties from the District level which helps in our overall communication with each other and thus makes us all stronger to help all District communities. And for those Lions repeating their office in your club, they are a great source of knowledge to be shared with all who will attend. We hope that you mark your calendars to send the officers to training on June 17th and that your club will have representatives to participate in this specialized training and networking for Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and Membership Chairs. Vice Presidents and all interested Lions are also welcome. With the 100th anniversary of Lions, there is a need for all officers to get training and/or refresher training at this event. 3 LCI Forward Submitted by: Lion Jama Wahl, 1BK GLT Coordinator Has your club heard about the goal of Lions Clubs International to serve 200 million people by the ? It will happen! And, your club can be a part of this audacious effort! At the International Convention in Chicago, Lions from around the world will be celebrating our first 100 years of service, but what happens after that? Well, LCI has a five-year plan. This plan is outlined in a video LCI Forward that is available for viewing online. Just go to View it individually or make it a program for an upcoming club meeting. Once your club members see the video, the next step is to have conversations about how your club can connect to the LCI vision of being the global leader in community and humanitarian service. The number one goal will continue to be serving those within our communities. Another way to engage your club is to report your service activities on the Centennial Challenge and MyLCI. Now, we know that Lions do not do what we do for accolades, but we do want to serve. So, why not report your service? By reporting, you are giving LCI a tool to reach out to other global service organizations to partner in activities as well as funding. Clubs can tap into these resources, making their local efforts stronger. Your secretary can get this done as part of monthly reporting. With a few clicks, your club can be a part of a huge global effort. A third way to make a connection is to be sure that every club member is listed on MyLCI with current contact information. Name a club member to be club chair for each of the chair positions listed on MyLCI. Once named, when LCI sends out a public relations blast focused on a certain subject such as Peace Poster or Alert, a lion from your club has the most current information. Information leads to knowledge and knowledge leads to power, power that can provide service! Give your club and members a chance to be powerful. Check out LCI Forward and get those conversations going! 3

Morris Morris Lions Donate $15,000 to the Morris Hospital Diabetes Program as Part of Our Centennial Legacy Project Benjamin Swiggett (Co-Chair Morris Lions Club Centennial Committee) For our Centennial Legacy Project, we donated $15,000 to the Diabetes program at the Morris Hospital. The donations were spread out over 3 donations of $5,000 each, one in January, April, and May. The donations are being used to provide free A1C tests and test strips. Along with the donation, we also set up a display rack in the lobby of the Morris Library, with information on Diabetes. The rack has information on the Hospital's Diabetes program, as well as general information on Diabetes from Lions International. The library was very generous in allowing us to use one of their empty rotating display racks. Be sure to check out our website for pictures of the presentations. Our Facebook page is the best place to see the latest events as they happen. Morris Lions Stephanie Coleman and Ben Swiggett present 3 rd check for $5000 to Mark Stedman, CEO of Morris Hospital, for their Diabetes Program. 7

Rockdale The Rockdale Lions Club gathered books from people making simple donations. As well as smaller groups putting together programs to collect them and then donate large groups of books to our club for a book sale that we held at Rockdale grade school. The idea was to put a book in every kids hand who wanted one regardless of price so we may books available for only $.25 for every three books that somebody donated they got to pick one book for free. The book sale was held the last Saturday in April at the school in the gym see the attached pictures. While there was not much money raised of which all of it was donated back to the school for the library and reading incentive program, kids were leaving with dozens of books to read and enjoy. It was an excellent turnout, more importantly, it was great to see kids being able to get their hands on reading material of all genre. Towanda Towanda Lions Club coordinated with Normal Community High School and Towanda Fire Department to place a wrecked car near the entrance to NCHS the week before prom. The message on the banner is "Don't text and drive, Don't drink and drive." We received several positive comments from adults, and we believe that prom night was accident free! The banner was made by industrial technology students at NCHS under the direction of Mrs. Paige Christie. Principal David Bollmann was fully supportive and is hopeful we can do the same next year. Towanda Lions involved in organizing this project and providing labor were Bob Hancock, Rick Myers, and Steve Shipley. 9

District 1-BK Scholarship Program Dear Fellow I-BK Lions, Meet our three new Scholarship recipients: Alyson Carroll Oswego, Katie Kukulka New Lenox, and Taylor Brophy Joliet. They join the other 5 students in your District program. Alyson Carroll is a graduate of Oswego High School. In her essay she wrote, I would love to teach special education at a secondary level. Children with disabilities are often not seen as real people because they are different than us. My ultimate goal is to change that. These students deserve to feel that they belong in this world along with you and me, and I believe that by being a special education teacher, I can be the person to fix it. I would teach them in a way that they would know how to react in real life. I want them to understand and keep with them what I teach them. Alyson will be attending Upper Iowa University. Katie Kukulka is a graduate of Lincoln-Way West in New Lenox. Katie wrote in her essay, Ever since I came home from school from my first day in first grade, I loved playing school. I would use my sisters and neighbors as students, and play in my basement all the time. I knew I wanted to be a teacher but never knew what I wanted to teach, until this year. I have been friends since the fourth grade with a fellow senior with autism. This year he waits outside of the main hallway and always has a story about his day to tell me. I pass him in the morning before school starts. It makes my day being able to talk with him and hear his stories about what he enjoys. He has made such an impact on my life because some students have bullied him in the past, and he has stayed so strong and remained a sweet person, despite what other students have said to him. My interaction with him has made me want to be a special education teacher and spend my life interacting with students like him. Katie will be attending Western Michigan University. Taylor Brophy is a graduate of Joliet West High School. In her essay she wrote, Since I was 12 years old I knew I wanted to be a special education teacher. When I was 7 I met a girl, Gillian that had Autism. We each enjoyed being with each other for different reasons. For her, I was one of the only people of the same age that she spent any time with at all. I obviously didn t realize that these simple playdates would provide me the dream to work with children like Gillian for the rest of my life. Since Gillian s mom has opened a school that I have been able to spend a lot of time at, Gillian and I are able to see each other often and communicate in a new way through her speech therapy. I have been able to observe and work with many other Autistic kids and even become a pen pal with one who is the same age as Gillian and myself. My passion for this major and excitement for what is to come has only grown. Taylor will be attending Illinois State University. It has been a pleasure to meet and learn from all the students that have entered our scholarship program. Lion Melissa Honiotes, a District Scholarship Student from our former 1-B days herself, will be taking over soon. I believe she will make a great Scholarship Chair person. Students entering the field of special education, audiology and optometry share the values of Lionism; reaching out to those in need. 12 Dear Lion, Lions have changed lives at home and around the world for a century. We matter because every act of kindness makes a difference in someone's life. And Lions matter now more than ever because the needs of the world are growing. We are introducing a new global service framework to help Lions meet the emerging needs of our second century of service. The service framework will help us achieve our LCI Forward goal of serving 200 million people per year by 2021 tripling our impact so we can help more people than ever before. It's an honor to introduce our new global service framework to you and your club: The new service framework includes vision, hunger, the environment, pediatric cancer and diabetes. Lions will continue to support young people by engaging youth as volunteers and service leaders in the five areas of service. We will announce diabetes as a new global service focusat our 2017 Centennial convention in Chicago, and we'll be asking Lions and Leos to rally around this global health emergency that results in 5 million deaths a year. Lions and Leos will continue to serve local community needs just as they always have. Lions Clubs International Foundation will support the service framework by aligning the work of our charitable arm with the efforts of Lions to create largescale, lasting change where it's needed most. The global service framework gives Lions new ways to serve and unite other caring people in service. We will continue to share updates about the service framework and diabetes with you and your club. Together, we can meet the challenges of our next century of service. And just like the first 100 years, the world is depending on us. Very truly yours, Chancellor Bob Corlew Your International President

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. Jones' group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed. After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the "Association of Lions Clubs," and a national convention was held in Dallas, Texas, USA in October of that year. A constitution, by-laws, objectives and a code of ethics were approved. And the rest is history. As we approach our 100th anniversary in 2017, it's moment to look back on our long and proud tradition of service and the numerous achievements of our association and Lions around the world. LCI Historical Highlights 1917: Melvin Jones and fellow Chicago businessmen found Lions Clubs to improve the community. The first convention takes place at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, TX. 1920: Lions Clubs become international by chartering a club in Windsor, Canada. 1925: During the international convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, Helen Keller charges Lions with becoming "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." 1926: Polar explorer and member of the Washington D.C. Lions Club, Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr. flies over the North Pole and carries the Lions flag with him. He flies over the South Pole later that same year.

1930: Lion George Bonham paints a cane white with a wide red band to aid the visually impaired after he witnesses a blind man having trouble crossing the street. 1931: Lions head south and establish a club in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The first international convention outside of the U.S. is held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 1933: Visitors to the Chicago World's Fair learn about Lions clubs at the fair's Social Science Division. 1935: Amelia Earhart, honorary member of the New York City Lions Club, completes a record-breaking nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Mexico during the Lions Clubs International Convention in Mexico City. Local Lions donate a Talking Book machine to the Milwaukee Public Library, allowing the blind to hear books. 1939: Members of the Detroit Uptown Lions Club turn an old Michigan farmhouse into a school to train dog guides for the visually impaired, helping to popularize dog guides worldwide. To provide an organized baseball program for children, Lion Carl Edwin Stotz of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, appeals for support from Lions clubs, YMCAs and other community partners. On June 6, 1939, the very first Little League baseball game is played at Park Point in Williamsport. 1944: The world's first eye bank is created in New York City. Today, most eye banks are Lions-sponsored. 1945: Lions assist in drafting the United Nations Charter, starting a lasting bond with the U.N. 1946: The Lions Blind Camp on Casper Mountain in Wyoming hosts its first group of blind children. 1947: In October, Lions celebrate the 30th anniversary of the association at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. It had become the world's largest service club organization at the time with 324,690 members in 19 nations. Lions are given consultant status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council. 1948: Only three years after World War II, Europe sees its first Lions club in Stockholm, Sweden. Geneva, Switzerland, follows suit just days later. A Lions club is formed in Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. Kalaupapa is a leper colony and the charter members all have Hansen's disease (leprosy). 1952: Filipino Lions reach out to Japan and encourage the chartering of the first Japanese Lions club. 1954: After an international contest among Lions, an official motto is chosen: "We Serve." The motto was submitted by Lion D. A. Stevenson of Font Hill, Ontario, Canada. 1956: The Detroit Lions Club gives 6-year-old Stevie Wonder a Christmas gift a drum set. The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is built. Soon after, 16 scientists and military personnel charter the 59ers Lions Club there. 1957: Lions launch youth programs, including the very successful Leo Clubs. 1965: Lions build the Melvin Jones Lions International Memorial in Fort Thomas, Arizona. 1968: The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is established.
