3 Introduction to Kiwanis The template for this presentation was prepared by Kiwanis International, and customized by our club, to provide new members with the most basic information needed to become informed and to take pride in Kiwanis membership and to contribute to the Rockland Kiwanis club and our community. 3

6 Kiwanis The History of Kiwanis KIWANIS was founded in Detroit, Michigan on January 21, 1915, by Allen Browne as a club for business and professional men. The original name was The Supreme Lodge of Benevolent Order of Brothers. The name was soon changed to KIWANIS,, an Indian term - loosely translated - meaning To Express Oneself. The KIWANIS spirit spread to Canada, Mexico and other countries. Today, KIWANIS Clubs are in more than 80 nations or other governing bodies. Today, there are about 600,000 Kiwanis-family members, [including Key Club; Circle K; Builders Club; and Aktion Club], worldwide. More than 70 years after its founding, Kiwanis International voted to allow membership status to women in

8 Kiwanis International Kiwanis International Local club members belong to Kiwanis International Has a 19 member Board of Directors Has the same management structure as does this club Has an Annual Convention for elections, education and fellowship Current membership is about 240,000 members in 7,700 clubs in 80 countries The average age is 57, with membership being 74% men and 26% women. The International office in Indianapolis is staffed with approximately 100 employees and provides leadership, guidance, information, supplies, materials and record keeping for many Kiwanis-sponsored activities and publishes the Kiwanis magazine in several languages 8

11 Our District The New England & Bermuda District consists of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island; and Bermuda! NE&BDK is one of 50 districts in the world There are 26 Divisions in the New England District District Membership: 4,649 (161 Clubs) October 2012 District Membership was 4,968 (170 Clubs) in December 2010 In 1969, there were 235 clubs and 10,000+ members in New England Has an Annual District Convention for: election of district officers; changes in bylaws; provides leadership education, and fellowship Publishes an electronic district bulletin called The Yankiwanian 11

16 Kiwanis Membership You got here because you are an individual of good character and community standing, residing, working or having other community interests within our club area. You can propose, as you were, friends and acquaintances for board approval as members. 16

18 Kiwanis Is NOT A fraternal or social club - although fellowship and friendships and business relationships are created through Kiwanis Affiliated with any religious organization A secret society with secret rituals A political circle. When political issues are presented at club meetings, efforts are made so that they are presented in a balanced and impartial manner... 18

21 About Our Club The KIWANIS club of Rockland was organized on January 6, 1936 We meet weekly on Mondays Our meetings start at 12:00 Noon and end at about 1:15 PM each Monday, [with one meeting per month held at 6:00 PM] Club Board Meetings are the 3 rd Wednesday of the month at 7:30 AM, and members are invited and encouraged to attend 21

26 Our Club s CHARITABLE FOUNDATION Formed in 2007, the Rockland Kiwanis Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization. The foundation board of directors is made up of the same members as those on our club s board. The club s immediate past president serves as the foundation president. The two boards manage and monitor the funds within the foundation and club accounts to ensure compliance with federal tax law. As a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rockland, you are a member of the foundation; just as you are a member of the Kiwanis Foundation of New England & Bermuda, as a result of your local club memberhip. 26

29 Club Administration Our club membership votes on: Election of officers and directors Delegates to conventions Amendments to club bylaws, including changes to club dues The Board of Directors Determines club policies Approves club projects Approves and controls club budget and expenditures Elects new members Has general management of the club 29

30 Administrative Committees Club Meeting Arrange for facilities and food for club meetings Greet members and guests: prepare room for set-up Schedule club meeting speakers (or other program features) Promote fellowship among all members (inter inter-club meetings, trips, outings, etc.) Membership Growth and Retention Establish new member goals (with President) Develop new member prospect list Involve all members in recruitment plans Invite prospects to club meetings as guests Obtain acceptance of membership from prospects Coordinate induction of new members Work constantly to retain current members in the club 30

31 Club Finances Service Account Income from fund-raising from the public sector Funds allocated to service projects by our board of directors PROCEEDS FROM PUBLIC FUND RAISING CANNOT BE USED FOR CLUB ADMINISTRATION 100% of the monies raised from the public goes back to the community! OUR CLUB DUES ARE: $ PER YEAR, [plus a one time administrative fee of $60 for new member processing] Supports: International Dues, Local Club, District Dues, International Insurance, and Magazine Subscription OUR CLUB MEAL COSTS ARE: INCLUSIVE OF TAX & GRATUITY. That means that the lunch, including beverage and dessert is about what one would expect to pay if eating out at a comparable restaurant! SPECIAL NOTE: Our meeting hosts do not charge us for the use of our weekly meeting rooms or our board of directors meetings. NOTE: IT IS AGAINST MAINE STATE FOOD LICENSING LAWS NOTE: IT IS AGAINST FOR ANY MEMBER TO CARRY IN OR CONSUME FOOD or BEVERAGE NOT PROVIDED BY THE HOST FACILITY. 31

41 Perfect Attendance Tabs are Awarded for each 12 Consecutive months of 100% attendance Attendance years do not have to be consecutive Missed meetings can be made up by attending Other Kiwanis Meetings By participating in any project initiated and implemented by our club 41

42 Transfers A member must resign from the old club, then be approved for membership by the board of the new club. 42

43 Leave of Absence Can only be granted by the Board of Directors Leaves can be for one to six months Member need only *pay dues while on leave Leave does not affect attendance record of the club *Must be a member in good standing 43
