1 Minutes of the Seventh Meeting of the Van Rensselaer Division Council for the Kiwanis Administrative Year Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Castleton-Schodack, NY August 8, 2012 Castleton Volunteer Ambulance Building 1700 Brookview Road Castleton On Hudson, NY Called to order at 7:16 PM Lt. Gov. Welcome: Lt. Governor Bob thanked all for attending noting that we are all volunteers and that our time is valuable. This is the seventh Division Council meeting and each club of the Division has hosted one. One of the requirements for a Division to be considered as distinguished is that eight Division Councils be held during These seven meetings and the Governor s Visit comprise the eight meetings that are required. Lt. Gov. Bob remarked that this has been a great experience for him and he has enjoyed getting to know so many Kiwanians in the clubs. Roll Call of Clubs: LG Bob requested that Secretary Dave Booker make the roll call of those attending: Castleton-Schodack - 15 members present including President Ed Brewer; East Greenbush 3 members present including President Lynne Catelotti; Hoosick Falls 5 members present including President Jim Miner and Secretary Gale Leva; North Greenbush - 2 members present including President Brad Clowe and Secretary Noreen Barrett; Rensselaer 2 members present; Sand Lake 6 members present including President Patricia Lane and Secretary Dave Booker; Troy 2 members present; Division Officers present: Lt. Governor Bob Loveridge; Treasurer Bob Pasquarelli; Secretary Dave Booker; SLP Guests present: CKI Capital Division Lt. Governor Shane Stuart; Key Club Division 18 Lt. Governor Arianna Schneider; Division Committee Chairs present: Governor s Project/First Lady s Project/Distinguished Club & Kiwanians Claire Dalton; Kiwanis International Foundation/Project Eliminate: Lynne Catelotti; Nominations & Succession: Co-Chair Gale Leva; NYD Foundation/Kamp Kiwanis /Young Children Priority #1: Bob Loveridge; Social Events: Noreen Barrett and Jean Andrick; and Webmaster: Ken Ormiston Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting: Secretary, Dave Booker Upon a motion duly made (Rensselear), supported (North Greenbush) and carried on a voice vote the minutes of the June 5, 2012 meeting were accepted as published. Approval of the Treasurer s Report: Treasurer Bob Pasquarelli presented the Treasurer s Report, copy attached, noting that the Division is doing well. Upon a motion duly made (East Greenbush), supported (Sand Lake) and carried on a voice vote the Treasurer s Report was accepted for filing.

2 Lt. Gov. Remarks: Lt. Gov. Bob mentioned that another requirement for a Division to be considered as Distinguished is that at least 80% of the clubs attend the Division Council meetings. With tonight s 100% participation the VRD has satisfied this requirement. Lt. Gov. Bob informed the clubs that the District Convention will include a basket raffle and is asking each club to consider a voluntary contribution of $25 toward a VRD basket. Lastly, Lt. Gov. Bob noted that the Division will host a Kiwanis Family Picnic at the Schodack Town Park on Saturday, September 29. He asked Bob Pasquarelli to review the plans. Each club is asked to invite members of their sponsored clubs and their parents to attend. For Kiwanis members the cost will be $10 and no cost for the kids. The menu will include hot dogs and hamburgers and ice cream sundaes. Please bring appropriate games (Lt. Gov. Shane noted that he had never played croquet but enjoyed the game at the last picnic.) The clubs are urged to let Bob or Ken Ormiston know how many will attend. KI Convention: Lt. Gov. Bob asked PG Dave Booker to review the highlights of the New Orleans Convention. Among the highlights was the election of Tom DeJulio as International President; Peter Mancuso elected as President of the KI Fountion; the passage of all the bylaw amendments concerning the new Standard Form of Bylaws (Dave noted that the new bylaws will be very different from the current bylaws and suggested that the clubs should review the new bylaws and adopt them when they are approved by the KI Trustees); many forums and New Orleans was HOT, HUMID and they have at least one very talented pick pocket. Club Reports: Copies of the submitted Club Reports are attached. Committee Chairs Reports & Comments: Webmaster: Ken Ormiston: Ken had nothing that he felt he had to say but LG Bob thanked Ken for the great job that he has done with the web site this year. Governor s Project/First Lady s Project/Distinguished Club & Kiwanians: Claire Dalton: Claire noted that the clubs had all the information needed for these projects and after completing the requirements all the club needed to do was file the paperwork. LG Bob supported her comments by adding that if the club had done the work the members deserved the recognition. Service Leadership Programs: Dale Hall was absent therefore LG Bob called on LG Shane for his comments. CKI Lt. Governor Shane Stuart: Thanked the clubs and the Division for the financial support that had allowed him to attend the CKI New Orleans International Convention. At the convention Immediate Past Governor Josephine Lukito was elected International President. One of the goals for the Capital Division is to raise the money to send one kamper to Kamp Kiwanis. If the Division has raised half of the money by the second Divisional meeting in October LG Shane will shave his head. CKI is allowing the Districts to create a policy for alcohol consumption. Key Club Lt. Governor Arianna Schnieder: On behalf of Executive Assistant Emily Gicewicz and herself she wanted to thank the Division and clubs for their financial support that allowed both to attend the Orlando International Convention. It was LG Arianna s first convention and it was an amazing experience to meet so many Key Clubers from around the world. A Key Club member from NY was elected International Trustee. Kiwanis International Foundation/Project Eliminate: Lynne Catelotti; before calling on Lynne, LG Bob mentioned that the clubs are being encouraged to have a new fund raiser for the Eliminate Project and that Sand Lake is having a series of Pasta Dinners at the West Sand Lake Fire House on the second Saturday of the month. This Saturday will be the first and he invited anyone who did not have other plans to come out and support the effort. Lynne reported that to date some $14,000,000 has been raised or pledged of the $110 Million needed. She urged the clubs to add that new fund raiser for Eliminate. One suggestion is to place canisters for Eliminate around the towns. A lot can be raised 60 cents at a time. NYD Foundation/Kamp Kiwanis /Young Children Priority #1: Bob Loveridge; Bob noted that he had discussed the NYD Foundation s Outreach Campaign and urged the clubs that had not already done so to consider a donation to the this effort. He called the clubs attention to an from KPTC Albany District Chair Rick Strum requesting the dates that the clubs would like to collect for the Bells

3 of Life at Crossgates Mall. He suggested that clubs should make their requests early as the best dates go fast. Bob also discussed that it had been agreed upon with the Albany Medical Center that the Bells of Life funds could be used to purchase needed equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is undergoing renovations. Membership Growth: Joe Behson; Joe was not in attendance but LG Bob requested that clubs review the interclubs that they had made this year and file the paperwork for a Round Robin banner patch soon. New members are needed badly. Nominations & Succession: Jim Prout, Wendy Prout & Gale Leva; it was noted that the Division is still looking for Past Presidents who would be interested in serving as a Lt. Governor specifically one who would like to serve as Lt. Governor Elect this coming year and follow LG Harleen as Lt. Governor for LG Bob pledged his support as well as the support of the entire Division to all that might be interested. Social Events: Noreen Barrett and Jean Andrick; with participation of 23 at the Theater Barn outing and seven at the tennis event both events were considered successful and most likely will be repeated next year. Old Business: Division Golf Tournament LG Bob informed the clubs that the money raised is over $4100 with about 2/3 of that having come directly from Kiwanians. LG Bob suggested that as there are plans to hold the event again next year, that $ be set aside for start-up money for the event. Upon a motion duly made (North Greenbush), supported (Hoosick Falls) and carried on a voice vote the suggestion was adopted. LG Bob suggested that $ be used to augment the Lt. Governor s line in next year s budget. Upon a motion duly made (Castleton-Schodack), supported (North Greenbush) and carried on a voice vote this suggestion was approved. LG Bob suggested that $1250 of the money raised be donated by the clubs of the Van Rensselaer Division to the Eliminate Project and that the Division name Lynne Catelotti as the recipient of a Zeller Fellowship. Upon a motion duly made (East Greenbush), supported (Sand Lake) and carried on a voice vote this suggestion was enthusiastically approved. LG Bob review the membership initiative that he proposed, a copy is attached, and upon a motion duly made (Hoosick Falls), supported (Castleton-Schodack) and carried on a voice vote the initiative was adopted and up to $ was allocated for the project. New Business: Transfer of Banner: President Pat Lane, Sand Lake, presented the Home Club of the Lt. Governor banner to President-designate Ed Brewer, Castleton-Schodack. Remarks by LG-Designate Harleen Hilton: As LG-d Harleen could not attend, LG Bob passed on her request that the clubs ensure that the presidents and secretaries attend the Club Leadership Education before October 1. She requests that anyone wishing to serve as a Division Chair contact her. Lastly Bob distributed the criteria for Distinguished Clubs. Meeting adjourned at 8:24PM Respectfully submitted, David E. GIVING PRIMACY TO THE HUMAN AND SPIRITUAL (a) Participate in the ELIMINATE Project (b) Honor a member or community volunteer with 25 years of service (c) Enroll new member committed to Six Objects of Kiwanis New Member Name Member ID# 2. ENCOURAGING THE GOLDEN RULE IN ALL RELATIONSHIPS (a) Complete a project involving Character Education (b) Recognize a local hero who saved child from harm (c) Enroll new member involved in youth services, mentoring New Member Name Member ID# 3. CREATING PUBLIC OPINION TO SUPPORT PATRIOTISM AND GOODWILL (a) Launch a traditional or social media campaign to promote Kiwanis service (b) Complete a project to benefit the children or families of heroes (c) Enroll new member involved in media or government service New Member Name Member ID To be a Distinguished Club the following criteria must be achieved: Enroll a minimum of three (3) new members in any of the Object categories; (multiple new members in any one Object category is acceptable) Certify completion of required club leadership education programs Satisfy at least eight (8) additional criteria within the Six Objects achieving a total of twelve (12) items completed. District Governors (or those they authorize) must certify compliance with the above criteria before any distinguished status is granted. A Kiwanis One web page will be created to provide suggestions for the various projects a club may undertake to achieve distinguished status.
