I am in awe of Will and Dan - they are taking on a major challenge and for such a worthwhile cause. This is about guts, determination, hard work and real spirit. Safe journey! Well done guys! Colin Jackson CBE, Former World Champion Hurdler Good luck Dan and Will. This is a monumental challenge, huge respect for you guys. I wish you all the very best and will be tracking your progress! Chris Robshaw, England and Harlequins Rugby Captain Best of luck to Dan and Will. I know firsthand how hard this challenge is and I wish you every success in your crossing. Make sure you win. Don t let me down! James Cracknell OBE, 2x Olympic Gold Medallist Nobody should under-estimate the physical and mental ordeal of rowing an Ocean. This is a huge challenge and I wish you the best of luck Alastair Humphreys, Adventurer What Dan and Will are doing is extraordinary, needing tremendous amounts of stamina, skill and courage. I have great admiration for you both and will be following your journey. You are very brave. William Roache, Ken Barlow in Coronation Street The Aims To break the world record for the fastest two man crossing and bring this record back to Great Britain, currently held by New Zealand. To raise in excess of 200,000 for three very personal charities. To ensure a strong return on investment for our partners. To achieve the first goal, Will and Dan will need to complete the race in 40 days, 5 hours and 52 minutes. Planning, preparation and training will be vital, not only to break the record, but to allow them to gain maximum exposure for their campaign partners and charities. They will also aim to raise 200,000 for their three chosen charities. This is a colossal amount of money which will quite literally transform lives. With corporate and public support Will and Dan can do something extraordinary and help save lives. Good luck. I m sure you lads won t need it but take some anyway! Matthew Pinsent CBE, 4x Olympic Gold Medallist
The Challengers DAN HOWIE The Challengers WILL NORTH Dan, 27 (28 come race day) is a chartered surveyor and sports enthusiast who has taken part in events such as marathons, half marathons and endurance cycling events. Rowing the Atlantic however will be by far his biggest challenge to date and one that will test him to the very limit. The fact he had never stepped foot in a rowing boat does not make things easier! Why Dan wants to do this: To raise as much money as possible for three amazing charities. I am well aware how lucky I am to be fit and healthy and able to undertake such a challenge which others cannot. I have wanted to row the Atlantic for many years and feel now is the perfect time to put the wheels (or rather oars) in motion. I want to look back on my life and feel I have pushed myself and done some great things. What a great adventure it will be to tell my grandchildren one day!! Will, 27 (28 on race day) is an asset management headhunter. In his spare time he plays 1st XV rugby for Hammersmith and Fulham Rugby Club and is a keen tennis player and surfer. Will has taken part in a number of fundraising challenges in the past, but this will be by far the greatest test of his mental and physical capabilities he has experienced. He is champing at the bit to face the trials the Atlantic will throw at him and is proud to be raising money for causes close to his heart. Why Will wants to do this: The three charities are immensely important to both Dan and myself and the opportunity to support them is all the motivation I need for investing so much time and effort. Few other challenges impose such great demands on the human body and mind and the exultation of crossing the finish line in English Harbour will be something to treasure for the rest of our lives.
The Charities CANCER RESEARCH UK, THE CATALYST CLUB The Charities LEUKAEMIA & LYMPHOMA RESEARCH Effective cancer treatment is not one-size fits all, it is individual. Cancer Research UK has therefore set up The Catalyst Club, a pioneering venture seeking to raise 10 million to accelerate and widen use of personalised cancer treatment. The advances that Cancer Research UK is making mean that doctors can match patients to the particular treatment most likely to help them beat the disease. Thanks to an explosion in their understanding of cancer genetics, and developments in scientific and medical technology, a new era of personalised cancer treatment is within reach. An example: In 2006, Simon North (Will s father) was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma, a severe form of cancer, which affects the cells in the body s immune system. Personalised treatment was at the heart of three stages of chemotherapy which brought Mr North into remission. More than 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only charity in the UK exclusively dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The charity s goal is to ensure that all patients have the disease diagnosed early and accurately and receive personal, targeted treatments which are both effective and have minimal side effects. Dan and Will have chosen this charity in memory of their friend, Gareth Crockett, who tragically died in a road accident whilst on a fundraising challenge in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Good luck Dan and Will. I wish you every success and it s brilliant you are doing this in Gareth s memory. This is one of the toughest challenges in the world but I have no doubt you will do it. Alastair Campbell, Writer, former spokesman to Tony Blair and Chairman of Fundraising at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. ST ANNA S Cancer Research UK is delighted to be associated with this voyage. Its daring and ambition are absolutely in keeping with our own plans to bring the benefits of molecular biology into the care of cancer patients through the work of the Catalyst Club: neither is easy or free of risk, but sometimes you have to stick your neck out to see the horizon. I wish William and Dan every success. Professor Peter Johnson, Chief Clinician at Cancer Research UK St Anna s really cannot begin to thank Dan and Will enough. Through this exceptional challenge they are setting themselves, they will change so many lives for the better. All at St Anna s are 110% behind them and are so excited to be part of this adventure. Lara de Klee, St Anna s founder St Anna s is a home and school for children in Winebba, Ghana. It was set up by Lara de Klee and Gabby Haigh to take care of abandoned or orphaned children. Currently it provides a comfortable home for ten youngsters. St Anna s Academy, a primary school for poorer children, opened in 2011 and already educates almost 100 pupils. St Anna s policy has always been that 100% of all donations - no matter how big or small - go directly into the project. Atlantic Row 2013 can make a mammoth impact on this charity.
Did You Know The Boat Only 500 people have successfully rowed across the Atlantic. More people have been to the South Pole. More people have been to the summit of Everest. They will encounter 60ft waves, sharks, shipping lanes and extreme temperatures. The boat will be on the move continuously with the crew taking it in turns to row 2 hr shifts, night and day. Each rower will need to gain a minimum of 2 stone in muscle prior to departure. A boat in a previous race was rammed repeatedly by a shark during their crossing. Measuring seven metres long by two wide, their nofrills carbon fibre monohull boat with a Kevlar outer layer is specially designed to cope with the strains and stresses of crossing an ocean. It s simple, self-righting design, with two rowing positions, storage for all equipment and a compartment for shelter, provides the crew with everything they will need. Solar panels on the cabin roof harness power to run crucial equipment: a water desalinator, GPS, short wave radio and SeaMe communications. Both boat and equipment are as light as possible to maximise speed and efficiency for the record attempt. COSTS: With an extreme event like this, there are certain costs that must be considered. An estimated 85,000 will be needed to fund this campaign: Boat: 28,000 Entry fee: 16,000 PR Support: 15,000 Equipment: 10,000 Shipping: 6,500 Training & Transport: 1,500 Food: 5,000 Flights & Accommodation: 3,000
Frequently Asked Questions How We Can Help You What happens in an emergency? A support yacht will shadow the entire 30 strong fleet to give assistance should there be an emergency. Should assistance be given, it will however result in disqualification from the race. What navigation systems are used? GPS, a compass and the stars! What training is required? Sea survival, navigation and first aid are the minimum training requirements to participate in the race. Endless hours will also be spent in the gym, on the boat and on rowing machines to build muscle and fitness. How do you go to the loo? Bucket and chuck it! Will sharks be a problem? They have been known to follow boats for days on end with some even ramming boats. Will you be able to communicate with home? Yes. Charged by solar panels, the crew will have a satellite phone to call their campaign partners, family and friends with regular updates. What happens in severe weather? The crew will stop rowing and bunk down in their tiny cabin where they will remain until calmer weather. Key Stats from the 2011 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge PR reached over 1 billion people. 726 pieces of coverage mentioning the race. 18 TV and radio broadcasts with mentions and branding.
