West Texas A&M University Police An Introduction to UPD
Who we are
Our Staff The University Police Department is made up of 17 full time police officers and a support staff of 25 non-sworn employees. The University Police Department operates 24/7, 365 days a year.
Protect Every UPD Officer is a TCOLE certified Peace Officer with full police powers both on and off campus. The officers of the University Police Department have a total combined experience of over 100 years.
Serve All of our services are offered free of charge to WTAMU students, staff, and the community. These services include: *Vehicle Unlocks *Vehicle Boosts / Roadside Assistance *Escorts *Lost & Found *Educational Programs *Operation Lockout Theft/Property Engraving *Buff Alert
Operation Lockout Theft (OLT) is a proactive, community based crime prevention program designed to educate you about crime risks and prevention. Part of our OLT program offers online property registration to all students, faculty, and staff here at WTAMU. Keeping an inventory of your valuables with serial numbers or owner applied numbers can aid in identification and or recovery of your property if it is lost or stolen. Serve
Educate The University Police Department offers a variety of classes for the university community. These classes are usually taught by request and are free of charge. The classes include such topics as: *Self Defense/Personal Protection *Alcohol Awareness *Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention *Dating Violence/Stalking *Hazing *Crime Prevention *Identity Theft *Basic Auto Care *Active Shooter *Specialized Programs for Awareness Events (varies)
Educate Cont Some of the programs we offer students are mandatory in order to ensure the University is complying with federal laws and requirements. The mandated programs include Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention, Dating Violence, and Stalking. Those programs include statistics about these specific crimes within the college environment, myths and facts, options for reporting both to police and Title IX, rights of victims, potential safety measures, bystander intervention information, and resource information.
While UPD does not advocate under age alcohol consumption or binge drinking, the reality is that it happens. Nearly 2000 college students die annually from binge drinking and or alcohol poisoning. Educate Cont Alcohol Awareness is another program UPD offers that is not mandatory but is requested regularly throughout the year. This program outlines how alcohol affects and is processed by the body, dangers of binge drinking, date rape drugs, signs of alcohol poisoning, consequences of under age drinking, and drinking and driving (DWI).
Educate Cont UPD also conducts and or helps facilitate other awareness events throughout the year to help bring awareness to issues that are prevalent in the college environment. Many of these programs are hosted jointly with other resources so that our students are aware of what is available to them if they need something.
Crime on Campus The University Police Department vigilantly reports all incidents known or reported to UPD. UPD also makes every effort to educate our community on the offenses occurring on campus property and how to prevent crime. To that end, UPD publishes several things to assist the community in understanding crime on campus. It is often difficult to put in perspective how safe one community is versus another. UPD tries to use a system that our community would understand.

Population/Crime Ratio is 1 in (ie., 1 in 121)
UPD officers receive extensive training and often specialize in certain areas such as: Computer Forensics Crime Prevention Defensive Tactics (Taser, Less Lethal, etc.) Active Shooter Training Interview and Interrogation Sexual Assault & Family Violence Training
The University Police dispatch utilizes state of the art equipment and is prepared to handle your phone calls 24/7. Program these numbers into your phone and give us a call when you need us. *Emergency 911 *Non-Emergency Dispatch
Questions?????? Here s your chance to ask anything that you ve been wondering about. Go ahead, ask.
