2 The 180 Program for Gang Prevention In order for multi-generational support services to work together effectively: law enforcement, school districts, and community agencies must clearly define a shared vision for youth and family wellness.

3 Innovative Program for Family Involvement The 180 Program - Community Partners for Gang Prevention offers youth and family support, gang prevention, weapon suppression, and crime reduction support services. As an innovative approach to engage parents and guardians, Mt. Diablo Unified co-located a School Social Worker and bi-lingual Family Resource Workers in the community (at MCC). Funding was provided from the Contra Costa County Police Chief s Association asset and property seizure and forfeiture.

4 Family Involvement / Parent Engagement When parents and guardians are actively involved with their child s education, there is a positive impact on achievement, attendance, and connectedness with the school community.

5 The need for parent support and education is a key factor to prevent youth from becoming involved in juvenile crime.

7 Recipe for Success 1. Set the table: Begin with a shared vision for student success. 2. Insist on transparent decision making. 3. Bring diverse interests together. 4. Bring people together to review data, identify student / community needs / gaps in services. 5. Involve student and parent voice. 6. Define goals positively, rather than the absence of problems. 7. View resources as instruments of action, not personal possessions. 8. Involve key stakeholders. 9. Start from a foundation of trust and mutual respect. 10. Define performance measures and outcome measures. 11. Consider realigning positions and programs to meet student needs. 12. One cup of accountability, two cups of support.

9 Our Story Youth in Contra Costa County, and the U.S., are recruited by gangs between age Students reporting low connectedness to their school were three times more likely to report interest in gang membership Around 119,600 people live in poverty in Contra Costa, of which 38,333 are children. Monument Crisis Center serves over 10,000 clients a year from across the county, of which over 3,500 are children. The 180 Program started in October 2016, and it s already highly successful!

10 180 Program: Services and Support Outreach Positive relationships with Concord Police Officers. CPD presence at backpack distribution, holiday celebrations, etc. Pizza with Police Partnership building between community agency and school district personnel. 180 Staff Presented at School Parent Liaisons meeting, School Social Work Meetings, Student Services Dept. Meeting. 180 Staff participated in the International Fair at Mt. Diablo High School Innovation and Recognition: ACSA Every Child Counts Symposium (Anaheim 2017) April 27, 2017: Concord City Council Public Safety Presentation

11 Education 180 Program: Services and Support Con t Gang prevention through parent education and engagement. Concord Police Department presentations at MDUSD schools and at Monument Crisis Center Parent Meetings Education to parent liaisons to prevent the commercial sexual exploitation of youth. Quarterly presentations at school district sites Presentations catered to parents and guardians who have expressed fear of their children. Positive Behavior Team meetings Workshops with CPD officers and MCC Teen Center youth to enhance trust and rapport.

Individualized, personalized care and attention Amplifying parent voices and emphasizing agency accountability Increased access to MCC Programs via warm handoffs. Parent-to-parent support After School Café and Teen Center Community Service for Juvenile Offenders (CSJO) youth volunteers / giving back to the community. Assistance to access MDUSD resources and programs. HOPE, FYS, 504

14 Student 1 Road to Success Stories 180 Program staff provided assistance for family to access resources and programs at school, in school district (HOPE), and in the community: Health, Behavioral Health, Social Services Referral process: Teacher Administrator Positive Behavior Team 180 Program MCC Parent Support Improved Social, Emotional Wellness Academic Progress Student Program staff provided personalized support for a family facing hardships and stressors. 180 Program staff linked the students and family to: a combination of opportunities, services, and support: i.e. Counseling, Tutoring, Youth Activities, Case Management, Referral process: Parent MCC 180 Program Oak Grove Middle School Family

16 The 180 Program: Next Steps NEXT STEPS: Seek input and guidance from the parent community. Review data for efficacy and alignment with agency goals (MCC, CPD, MDUSD) Provide Training to School Personnel re Gang Prevention Provide Training to Parents and Guardians re Gang Prevention Parent Request: Parent-to-parent support gatherings at MCC.
