1 30 August 2018 Issue 107 POP UP NEWS Mapleton, Queensland New this Week Funds for Farmers proposed community function to raise money for drought relief. 28 October more details will be forthcoming in the next Pop up News. LILYPONDS ACTIVITY The Council has been very busy recently improving the quality of the Lilyponds. Stage two of the pathway system is underway and will make the Lilyponds more accessible for all. MADCA has been lobbying to have the picnic shelters cleaned up and council has had bird spikes installed in the roofs of the buildings to deter swallows. The areas have been pressure cleaned and repainted which is a big improvement. A boat has been used to scoop up much of the Salvinia, a water weed, which covers the tops of the ponds. Two workers were then employed for two days to manually scoop out the Salvninia that was floating close to the banks and missed by the boat. Salvinia is virtually unstoppable but the Council aims to clean the ponds as best they can before the warm weather. Photo Caption MADCA Annual and General meetings, Wednesday 5th September. 2 Story telling Mapleton Community Library Saturday 1st September 10:30am BUSHFIRE There are plenty of things that we all can do to improve our chances of surviving a bushfire. The Mapleton Rural Fire Brigade have joined with the MADCA Disaster Management Group to present an evening on Surviving a Bushfire. VENUE Mapleton Bowls Club DATE Wed 19 September TIME 5pm to 7pm Come and hear lots of practical advice on this important topic. If a bushfire starts, you cannot assume that a fire brigade will be available to help. You must prepare now. Looking for a new hobby with a little exercise attached? Friday afternoons from 2 p.m. come to the Mapleton Bowls Club and try Bowls. You may surprise yourself and find that it s really good fun! All equipment necessary will be there for you. Just wear flat soled shoes, flip flops are fine and the club has those too if needed. The club coach, Graham Woolley, will be there to help you. All for free. You may like to telephone Graham first just to make sure that someone is there to meet you, or you can ring Gresham Dobson, club secretary on Look forward to seeing you there. Was the $ going to be won. Alas once again the person drawn was not in attendance. So to give it a nudge, put in your diary, Friday dinner night 07/09/2018 for we will be having two draws to see if we can find a winner. Don t forget you have to be a member and you have to be there. This plant can be used as a ground cover but will also climb vigorously if given something to support it. Ideal for use creating a screen up to 6m, climbing into large trees, or left to ramble over fences, where the flowers can be observed easily. Continuing News WANTED - your help is needed My name is Chris Mason from Lions. I have a need for an old style overhead projector to create a very large draw ing on a wall at my place. I would appreciate any help to steer me towards one of these projectors to borrow for a few days. 4 5pm on 7 th December 2018 Light the Lights at Mapleton Lilyponds Again this year, MADCA will host Mapleton s Annual Christmas event. Planning has commenced to include a variety of food, drink and hand-made gift and novelties stalls. Thank you to the local Rural Fire Brigade for agreeing to make sure Santa will arrive on time to distribute his gifts and sweets to the children. A multi-draw raffle is planned to be drawn on the night. Tickets available soon. We look forward to you all joining us at this Festive event. More news to come! MADCA Management Committee.
