3 SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL CHAPEL The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (BRWG) recently completed the outfitting of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital Chapel. The Guild was asked to make several items of furniture for the new Chapel which was to represent all faiths. A lectern and several tables were made in Southern Silky Oak, all wood sourced from trees salvaged on the Blackall Range. The BRWG has facilities to mill logs, dry sawn wood in their own solar kiln, so the project really was from chainsaw to fine furniture. When delivering the furniture, Ann Shepperson, the Chaplain, spoke to one of the Woodies about a fitting sculpture in wood to be displayed on one of the tables. She wanted it to represent all faiths using the Chapel and to show a caring depiction of humanity. Philippa Friend, a Woodie and an artist was asked to design a sculpture to the specification. The design chosen was of an adult in a caring pose with a child. The wood chosen was Red Cedar (Toona australis), which was salvaged from the Atherton Tableland, stumps left behind by the early timbergetters. The carving was done by Tom Black, Kaz Depczynski, Dave Southern and John Muller. The Old School House Working Bee A working bee will be held at The Old School House (TOSH) garden am (weather permitting) on Saturday 9 February, followed by morning tea. Earlier start for those who want to avoid the heat. If you are a newcomer to our working bees please remember to slip, slop, slap and sip, bring a hand weeding tool, bucket and secateurs. Further information Probus Club of North Blackall Range Inc meets on the second Friday of each month for Fun, Fellowship and Friendship. Come along and join the group. QCCC MAPLETON OPEN DAY/CHAPLAINCY FUNDRAISER The annual QCCC Mapleton/Chaplaincy Fundraiser will be held on Sunday 10 th March this year. Kicking off at 4pm, the QCCC pools are available for a community swim, catering is provided for an evening meal and will be followed by a movie on the Skyview Cinema (Outdoor Movie Screen) or Kirkwood Hall if there s rain about. QCCC donates all the supplies sold which means all income generated from food sales goes directly to chaplaincy at Mapleton State School. So bring your swimmers and your cash.
