1 The Quarterly Connection Message from the President Let s just start by saying we all love our jobs. That being said, I m sure you get as tired as I do with the day to day grind. For me, the AAP has been a reminder of the bigger picture, the reason I went into Pediatrics. Several times a year I have the opportunity to congregate with my colleagues to put our disappointments and annoyances aside to quickly become inspired by other s successes, and the special opportunity we have to change the lives of children. Sometimes we all need reminded that it s all about the kids. In our inaugural newsletter, we hope to remind you of the benefits of being a state and national Academy member. We encourage you to review this quarterly snapshot of what is happening in our state and nation. If you see something that interests you, please contact us and get involved! The newsletters will be archived on the WV AAP website. Let the AAP inspire you! ~ Traci Acklin, MD Save The Date NCE Register Orlando, FL Nov 2-6, nd Annual Tiny Hearts Day West Virginia Capitol Feb 14, 2019 WV AAP Annual Meeting Stonewall Resort March 29-30, 2019 Hot Topics 2018 WV Legislative Changes Affecting Controlled Substance Prescribing Learn More AAP Launches #VoteKids Campaign Take advantage of key messages to help you guide your op-eds and sample social media messages Learn more What is a JUUL? 2 WV AAP Chapter Projects Say Yes To Safe Sleep for Babies- September is Safe Sleep Awareness month! WV AAP joined the statewide campaign to educate new families about the importance of safe sleep for infants in 2018! Learn more about the campaign from Dr. Hilary Morley: View our video Order your FREE resources online Project ECHO WV AAP is participating with Kennedy Krieger Institute s Project ECHO. The session will run mid- September 2018 through June The TeleECHO clinics are held weekly on Wednesdays beginning September 12th, from 12:00-1:00 pm. A clinic consists of a de-identified patient case presentation and followed by a brief didactic. It is flexible in that Spokes don t have to join every week (but many do!) All clinics are held over Zoom video conference. A Spoke could be an individual provider or a group from a practice. Where access to specialists may be limited, providers can become a resource for referrals for developmental and behavioral health care in their practice and community. Register today EPSDT Webinar WV AAP is one of six states that received a grant from National AAP to advocate and educate providers, state partners and legislators about the importance of EPSDT benefits for WV children. The second webinar in the series of ESPDT webinars will be held on Thursday, September 20th from 1:00-2:30 pm EST. The webinar will discuss various state definitions of medical necessity, the experiences of pediatricians when they encounter challenges in securing medically necessary services for children in Medicaid, and hopefully some other perspectives, such as that of the legal community. Watch for registration information soon! Our Children Our Future Campaign Unfortunately, tragic school and public mass shootings continue to plague our country. Further, suicide rates are at an all-time high in West Virginia. These situations are not uncommon and are preventable. Extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws, or red flag laws, may allow families, community members, or law enforcement officers to petition a court directly for an order temporarily restricting a person s access to guns. This vital tool saves lives by allowing the people most likely to notice when a family or community member becomes a danger, to take concrete steps to disarm them. WV AAP & Moms Demand Action are collaborating to advocate for ERPO legislation in WV. Join us at the People s Policy Summit on September 18th in Charleston, WV to educate legislators and advocate for this important issue. Register to attend

3 WV AAP Chapter Projects AAP CELEBRATES CATCH 25th ANNIVERSARY The Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Program is a national initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that supports pediatricians to collaborate within their communities to advance the health of all children. Through the CATCH Program, pediatricians and residents are empowered to identify promising practices that work in their individual communities. Learn more: The next call for proposals will open on December 1, Contact Dr. Kimberly Cross WV AAP CATCH Facilitator Kimberly.Cross@camc.org to learn more about how to apply! Membership Spotlight We want to hear from you! Dr. Lisa Costello has recently been appointed as a citizen member to the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Children s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). CHIP provides children with age-appropriate screening and benefits, like dental coverage and access to mental health and substance abuse services. WVCHIP reports to a governing board made up of citizen members, legislators, and state agency members, who are responsible for the program s annual financial plan. Lisa is recognized on the legislative committee for the WV State Medical Association and serves as the vice president of the WV Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, she holds a national position serving on the Section on Early Career Physicians Executive Committee as the District III Representative. Do you have updates, important information, news, or pictures of WV AAP members to share in future newsletters? We have a new WV AAP Communications Director- Jordan Beckett, DO. Dr. Beckett has agreed to serve in a new role for the WV Chapter!
