1 2013 CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Thank you for providing educational programs they are an asset for community, teachers, parents and all the young children they touch. Kathy Cornwell, Stepping Stones Enrichment Program, Program Director/Teacher KEET, Public Television for the North Coast, educates and enriches our communities by providing informative, entertaining programs and innovative outreach, creating public dialogue on local and global issues, and building a vital community VALUE 2013 KEY SERVICES IMPACT KEET-TV continues to be a valuable part of the North Coast community by providing free learning opportunities for citizens of all ages. KEET provides extensive early childhood education and caregiver workshops through our Ready To Learn program. We also offer our viewers a chance to learn more about the community we live in through locally produced programs. And younger viewers continue to get help with math and science questions on HomeWork Hotline. In 2013, KEET-TV provided these key local services: Year-long campaign on the stigma of mental illness through on-air messaging and community meetings. Ready to Learn early childhood education workshops. Candidate Forums in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County. HomeWork Hotline live call-in program airing twice weekly. KEET-TV s local services have had a deep impact on the North Coast through a variety of efforts: Created extensive dialog on the stigma of mental illness in our community resulting in funding for a local program in Served hundreds of children and families with parenting workshops, storytime events, and help with science and math questions for students ages 8 18.

2 2013 CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT IN THE COMMUNITY The power of partnerships and collaborations exemplify the spirit of our North Coast community. Collaborations provide inspiration, encouragement, reality checks and substance to our work. They allow us to dream and act outside of the limitations of our individual organizations. At KEET- TV, we strive to work together with our community. Community members, organizations and businesses work with us to provide enriching, educational and meaningful television and outreach programs to the North Coast of California. In 2013, KEET-TV collaborated with many community members, volunteers, and organizations in our effort to provide meaningful community service. We reached our community through direct participation in our outreach efforts and through our broadcast of numerous local productions in These collaborations resulted in television programs such as A New State of Mind: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness, a state-wide collaboration with other public television stations, a second season of North Coast Perspectives, and the 9 th season of HomeWork Hotline. KEET s early childhood education community outreach initiative, Ready To Learn, continues to reach thousands of community members through partnerships with county libraries, multiple assistance centers, family resource centers, museums, schools and even the botanical garden. KEET TV s Ready To Learn Program is now in its 18 th year, one of the longest sustaining RTL programs in the PBS system. Since 1996, KEET-TV s Ready To Learn Service has been working with community partners to provide literacy opportunities for children, parents and caregivers. Through family resource centers, KEET has distributed over 40,000 books to children (including Spanish language books) who may not have them otherwise. Through childcare providers, elementary schools and public health organizations, KEET offers workshops to provide professional development for caregivers, and practical advice for parents. This includes workshops in Spanish. Collaboration with California PBS stations and funding from resulted in a year-long campaign to help destigmatize mental illness. One in four Americans will experience a diagnosable mental disorder each year, yet mental illness is often misunderstood and stigmatized. A New State of Mind: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness tells the stories of everyday people through their struggles, recovery and resilience in the face of mental health challenges. It also shines a light on the far-reaching effects of stigma related to mental illness. KEET held a community forum which included guest speakers who suffer from mental illness. Their personal stories spoke of hope and challenges still ahead that we must work on as a community. More than 500 interstial messages ran on three of KEET-TV s channels for more than six months addressing this issue. As a result KEET will be receiving funding in 2014 to produce a local program.

3 2013 CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT IN THE COMMUNITY HomeWork Hotline continues to be an outstanding example of community involvement and support. Local math and science teachers are available to answer student questions on live television every Tuesday and Thursday. The program was created with KEET s dedicated advisory committee of representatives from Humboldt State University, College of the Redwoods, and many Humboldt County Schools. HomeWork Hotline, originally supported by foundations, is now supported by community Rotary clubs, and other local businesses. They see the value in the education of our children and what KEET can provide. The result is a fun, interactive show that offers real help to children with their math and science. HomeWork Hotline is now entering its ninth season on KEET-TV. Over the years, more than 2,500 math and science questions have been answered on the show, with callers ranging from the ages of 6 to 18. KEET presented an in-depth interview with newly elected Congressman Jared Huffman who answered questions submitted by viewers. And KEET continued its partnership with the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County in presenting local candidate forums. KEET also worked with Humboldt State University in promoting the testing of the local Tsunami Warning System. Another continuing series, North Coast Perspectives, provided viewers with a closer look at economic issues affecting the Northcoast. One example was the two part program on the economics of marijuana on our economy, what would it be like if it was gone, the illegal, and safety aspects and should we legalize. Moderated by Julie Fulkerson, this second season of North Coast Perspectives provided viewers with a closer look at topics that ranged from the entrepreneurial spirit to growing older in our community. Through their financial and volunteer support, our community members and partners not only enjoy the variety of programming on KEET-TV, but they allow others to enjoy it, as well. As partners with KEET-TV, they help provide in-depth reporting on scientific discoveries, the natural world, political and social issues, historical events and the arts, in addition to a variety of lifelong learning opportunities. Sometimes our programs spark viewers to create their own collaborations. Every once in a while, we find out about viewers who see a program on KEET-TV and are inspired to create their own projects that lead to a positive change in our world. Building vital community partnerships is part of our mission statement.

4 2013 CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT STORIES OF IMPACT As part of a broad effort to reduce the stigma and discrimination of mental illness in California, the California Metal Health Services Authority sponsored an hour long documentary and interstials that examines the impact of stigma and discrimination. Through community screenings KEET enabled discussions between individuals, family members, the media and within our community. The forums provide a valuable community service to citizens especially for those who cannot easily attend public meetings with candidates. We believe that an informed electorate is vitally important and strive to provide accurate and balanced information for our viewers, who are also encouraged to call in their own questions to candidates. The candidate debates are presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County. In its 9 th season, HomeWork Hotline is a live, interactive, call-in program (using a toll-free number) to assist students in grades 3 to 12 with their math and science homework questions. Our highly qualified, credentialed teachers do not give out answers, but rather, they help work through problems on the air with the caller, one-on-one. The program has served thousands of children and continues to be encouraged in classrooms throughout the North Coast community.

5 CONTENT CONTENT AND AND SERVICE SERVICE REPORT REPORT Evaluating IN THE COMMUNITY Outcomes, Measuring Impact Ready To Learn KEET TV's Ready to Learn service is an initiative designed to help our community's children 0-8 years old become media-wise, curious, explorers of knowledge, who will thus begin school "ready to learn." Channel 13 has long demonstrated a commitment to serving our local children; parents, teachers and child care providers by offering quality educational programs, workshops and fun family events since This year we had the opportunity to offer workshops using the Sesame Street Little Children Big Challenges: Divorce curriculum. This adult s only workshop was shared in eight different cities, the Hoopa reservation and the Multiple Assistance Center for the Healthy Moms program. My parents got divorced when I was 3- years old and nobody said anything to me about it. My dad just disappeared, leaving me to make up my own stories about who he was and where he went. I sure wish this kit had been around back then so people would have talked to me. Sesame Street Little Children Big Challenges: Divorce Healthy Moms - parent The kits provided by the Children s Television Workshop were well received by parents and providers who were experiencing a divorce themselves or knew of someone close that was experiencing one. The kit contains a DVD, storybook, and parenting tips book all regarding how to speak with even the very youngest of children on the subject of divorce.
