5 TOWN HALL DISCUSSION A total of 25 Ripley county residents participated in a town hall discussion about Ripley county strengths and challenges to preventing substance abuse among youth. The town hall was conducted by members of the Collaborative Research Initiative and the Ripley County Drug Awareness Coalition.

8 YOUTH FOCUS GROUPS A total of 14 Ripley county youth residents participated in two focus group discussions about youth perceptions of substance abuse among their peers and others in the community. The focus groups were conducted by the Collaborative Research Initiative and the Ripley County Drug Awareness Coalition.

10 Youth Focus Group Perceptions What are your peers using? Like alcohol, and marijuana, and tobacco are probably the three main problems that we have around here. Why do youth drink and/or use drugs? There's been a lot of people who're like "I just want to see what it feels like. And then a lot of people want to fit in. I think that a lot of people like because depression is such big deal in our school. Why do youth decide not to drink and/or use drugs? I don't know, for me it's like you know I've seen what alcohol and marijuana do to people and I don't want to be like that, so that's why I don't do it. And like she said, my Mom would kill me.

11 Youth Focus Groups Recommendations: 1. You have to get to people before they've made up their minds. Youth recommended starting intensive prevention efforts in 6th and 7th grade and following up through high school graduation. 2. Youth want to hear from other kids about the consequences of alcohol and drug use. They felt that health information was not meaningful or relatable, but stories about what happened to people like them had the potential to change the way they think and act.

12 COMMUNITY SURVEY DATA A total of 24 Ripley county residents responded to a survey link shared by members of the Ripley County Drug Awareness Coalition.

This table is meant to be an overall picture, and the low percentages should not be taken as an indication that the rest of the sample does not view these substances as problematic.

16 Community members utilize strategies to prevent teenagers from using alcohol in their households. Keep alcohol locked or in a place where teenagers cannot get it. Keep track of alcohol to make sure teenagers have not had any. Instruct teenagers not to drink any alcohol in the home. Instruct teenagers not to remove any alcohol from the home. All but two schools can fund staff time towards these efforts.

22 INDIANA YOUTH SURVEY DATA (IYS) A total of 2,112 Ripley county children in 6th-12 th grade responded to a survey conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center. Of those responses, 2,018 responses were included in data reporting.
