1 March 2017 Newsletter of the COL Howard MacCord Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia From the President Greetings, archeologists! I had planned to make some comment to the effect that winter is behind us, but as I write these words, there is talk among the professional weather-guessers of a March snow storm in a few days. But even if that does come to pass, we should certainly be on the path to field season. In fact, on page 2, you will find the announcement of the 2017 ASV Annual Field School. This year, we will return to the Eastern Shore, which is home to one of the two newest chapters in ASV. There s plenty of great work to be done there, both prehistoric and historic, with many sites that are threatened by sea-level rise. The application is reproduced on page 3. I also need to extend a reminder that it s time to renew our memberships in both ASV and the COL Howard Mac- Cord Chapter. We ve been a bit slow on renewals this year, so I ask that everyone find a moment to complete the forms on pages 5 and 6 and send them in, along with your checks. Membership fees make possible the good works that we do as a chapter and as a Society. So, please attend to this bit of administrative work. Finally, note that there will be no meeting in March, as our regular meeting place at the DHR Lab will not be available on our meeting night. That said, our enterprising editor has identified an alternative archeology program that might interest our members. See page 7 for the details. - Len Blasiol Chapter Officers President Len Blasiol len.blasiol@gmail.com Vice-President Joe Corley montjoco@aol.com Secretary Ken Tuley bluewater328i@gmail.com Treasurer Lynn Taylor taylor9603@yahoo.com The Plowzone March 2017 Page 1

4 Featured Websites We re continuing our review of archeology-related websites, as recommended by Chapter member Lyn Lanier. * * * Archeological Society of Virginia YouTube Channel, found at UC_DgTFIAgaZ9YSnKRY3dkCg is...well, a YouTube Channel devoted to our very own ASV. It contains seven uploads that are marked as being a year old (but they appear to be older). Plenty of ASV illuminati explain to viewers just what Virginia archeology is all about. These are very short videos, averaging about two minutes each, although one is about six minutes long. They appear to have been taped on the same day, at an excavation. Like any YouTube Channel, you can subscribe to it and receive automatic push notifications if and when new videos are posted, although it doesn t appear that the channel is in active use. That said, this is such a great outreach resource that your editor plans to point it out to the Authorities, in hopes that the channel can be rejuvenated and the content updated regularly. * * * Jamestown Rediscovery a world uncovered [YouTube video] at v=cjoeyelsu0o is a single video, rather than a channel. It was created by a professional production company, and the quality is very high. There s quite a bit of history of the colony, then plenty of footage devoted to telling the story of the role of archeology in the Rediscovery. And for those of us with some more life experience...it was hosted by former Richmond journalist and descendant of a famed aider and abettor of John Wilkes Booth: Roger Mudd. 7 Monthly Programs March We won t be meeting in March, but as it happens, the Archaeological Institute of America, Richmond Society, is hosting a lecture on our regular meeting night, March 16th, 6:00 PM, at The University of Richmond, Jepson Hall, Room 118. The topic is The Athenian Naval Bases in the Piraeus, presented by Bjorn Loven, University of Southern Denmark. The lecture is open to all, free of charge. April On April 20th, we ll meet at VDHR at 6:30 PM to perform lab work. Dee will identify a collection that needs some loving care and will supervise our efforts. For Certification students, this time can be logged as lab hours. On April 27th, the Chapter will join with DHR to support Earth Day at Fort A.P. Hill. Set-up starts at 8:00 AM and the event lasts from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. We need Chapter members to man the booth and talk to young Caroline County students about the coolest topic in the World: Archeology! For Certification students, you can log the time as volunteer hours. This is a great event. Lots of fun and very rewarding. If you want to volunteer, please contact Chapter President Len Blasiol. May Field School! As described on page 2, the ASV Annual Field School will be conducted May Accordingly, we will not hold a regular monthly meeting during May. If you have an idea or proposal for a monthly program or other activity, please be prepared to discuss it at the next chapter meeting, or contact Chapter President Len Blasiol.
