2 Byström Youth Services A low-threshold activity centre primarily for young people living in Oulu and aged between 16 and 29 Services are also available for parents and professionals working with young people The goal is that young people receive all the necessary services from the same place, with or without an appointment The service supply includes communication activities for young people, information and counseling along with support for everyday life, career planning and finding jobs, and also activities aimed at improving employment Issues concerning young people include work, education, health and welfare, money matters, accommodation, relationships, leisure time, addictions (drugs, alcohol) and much more

3 The focus is on preventive services, the goal being that less young people move on to so-called repairing services Employees from various departments within the city of Oulu work at the Byström Youth Services: Educational and cultural services: youth workers, information advisors and outreach youth workers Employment services: counsellors for issues related to employment Health services and social work: social workers, public health nurse and psychiatric nurse Two employees from the Oulu region s Public employment and business services : specialist in employment issues and psychologist specialized in vocational guidance Six units of the city of Oulu along with the state s employment administration are active at the Byström Youth Services

4 The activity is coordinated by the city youth services with a coordinator The employees are on their own organisations pay roll but stationed at the Byström Other expenses are covered by the city of Oulu s youth services Cooperation is carried out with the third sector, educational organisations, companies, the Finnish Defence Forces and many others

5 Young people participate in planning the activity and in developing the services The employees also learn and easily get help from each other which improves the quality of the services When needed, the customers are served by a multiprofessional team and, as a result, young people can take care of multiple issues with one visit -> This decreases the need of so-called repairing services

7 Youth Information and Counseling Centre Nappi Youth Information and Counselling Centre Nappi offers equal, free and appointment-free counselling, guidance and information for young people living in Oulu aged between 13 and 30, their parents and others working with young people Information advisors at Nappi are in charge of the initial assessment of young person who comes to Byström for the first time -> identifieng the young persons situation and give the information, guidance and support they need -> or select a professional, who continues to work with them Service is offered at Nappi, by phone, by and by online services

8 Councellors of Workshop Outside Premises The Workshop Outside Premises activity (WOP) offers under 29 year-old vocationally trained young people subsidized measures to get jobs at companies The support includes both subsidized wage and personal support for young people and entrepreneurs The duration of the WOP period is estimated individually depending on what the young person s situation is WOP also offers counselling for young people seeking apprenticeships along with people lacking education or people who want to change their profession A job market coach and two work coaches are employed at the WOP activity

9 Outreach youth workers Outreach youth work advisors work at the Byström centre The target group of this individualized work form is young people aged between 15 and 25 who are beyond the labor market, education system or other activities The work is also carried out using group activities in cooperation with other professionals

10 Job search councellors Job search is a service that lists all of the city of Oulu s open try-out jobs for unemployed people looking for work, living in Oulu and aged between 17 and 29 There are also the open try-out jobs of the city of Oulu s youth workshops At try-out jobs youth can get familiar with different occupations, job descriptions and get more confidence regarding career choices The goal of the try-out job activity is also to support longterm unemployed who have vocational education

11 Targeted youth worker The mission of targeted youth work is to strengthen young people socially It aims to level up life s minor and bigger worries Essential work modes include different group activities, individual work and service guidance In addition, targeted youth work consultates and educates professionals working with young people

12 Worker for young immigrants Supporting immigrant young people in settling to a new country after the actual settlement period has ended Sorting out the background situation, advising in daily life matters and licence issues, advising in how to manage in a new cultural environment and being support person for the immigrants The work is primarily individual counselling but includes group activities to some extent

13 Advisors on summer jobs and social employment Advisors aim to find jobs for young people in Oulu through the summer job voucher process and students summer job campaigns Arpeetti Employment programme employs young people on social grounds

14 Oulu region s Public employment and business services Specialist, the line/department of subsidized employment The specialist s job is to advise young people in work and education matters Psychologist, employment and business services Advising young people in career choice issues clarifying issues relating to young people s future, career choices and curriculums In addition to conversations, the counselling can include psychological tests, tasks, work and education experiments along with specialist evaluations

15 Health and social services Social workers There are two social workers employed at the Byström youth services Social workers advise young people regarding money matters, accommodation and other issues relating to everyday life Follow-up measures are planned together with the social workers and young people

16 Psychiatric nurse The Byström s psychiatric nurse is part of the city of Oulu s basic health care The activity aims to improve mental health Primarily the work is done individually or in pairs Work duties include e.g. working with young people who suffer from depression, panic disorders and insomnia If necessary, customers are directed to special health care services The psychiatric nurse collaborates with other professionals at Byström along with other officials

17 Public Health Nurse The Public Health Nurse aims to improve health and welfare, to prevent illnesses and problems and to detect them early The essential job is to support and strengthen the use of young people s resources and coping with life Work modes include health meetings, multi-professional cooperation, consultation, pair work, group activities, entering the spaces and places where young people spend their time along with online services

18 Youth café Bysis Youth Café Bysis is a youth house in the city centre where young people under 18 come to spend their leisure time There are also band activities at Bysis During school terms Bysis is open on 5 nights per week from Tuesday to Saturday Gaming and media space A space designed for pc-gaming and media projects The activities are organized according to the wishes of young people who can freely use the space Young people can use the computers during the opening hours Trainings, workshops and events, such as online gaming tournaments, are also organized The target group of the activities is young people aged between 13 and 29
