The workshops in this section are designed to acknowledge your experience with illness and to explore elements of control for example living with symptoms, healthy lifestyles and selfmanagement. The workshops listed in this section are designed to support the use of the recovery model to chart and manage the impact of illness and to understand and tell others about your own recovery. 1 The workshops listed in this section consider the value of your recovery story and how you may develop the skills to enable others to do likewise.
3 Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to the second year of The Northern Region Recovery College. As you will see, The College offers a range of interesting and inspiring workshops to promote recovery and wellbeing for all. We have had a very successful year working alongside people with lived experience, staff and partner agencies in the true spirit of co-production. We plan to continue with this in the next year. This project affords sharing of expertise and learning together which is really exciting and we look forward to the further development of The Recovery College. In our college we offer workshops designed and delivered, in partnership with those who have lived experience of mental health problems or distress and those who have professional experience. Together we can learn to make the most of ourselves and break down barriers and stigmas. Through learning, you will increase your knowledge about recovery and self-management. By recognising those skills you already possess and the discovery of new ones, it can help you achieve whatever it is you want from many aspects of your life. Rosemary Hawthorne Recovery Co-ordinator The only impossible journey is the one you never begin Anthony Robbins 2
4 Introduction The Recovery College offers everyone including those who have lived experience, carers, staff, volunteers and members of the general public the opportunity to learn from each other and to develop skills to manage their own recovery journey or to begin a new one. The Northern Region Recovery College is for the community, based in the community. Local facilities are used to teach not treat. Our philosophy being to deliver an educational rather than therapeutic approach, where we focus on strengths, talents and resources to help explore possibilities and develop skills in order to assist you in achieving your goals and ambitions. Everyone has challenges, everyone can learn. Our workshops provide the opportunities to encourage individual recovery, wellness, empowerment, progress and life-long learning. We hope this prospectus will give you the information you need to help you make decisions about enrolling as a student and the workshops you may wish to sign up for. 3
5 Routed in Recovery Recovery means something different to everyone. Here at The College, we mean having the ability to live a satisfying life. Whether or not you have continuing difficulties with your mental health or you care for someone who has, together we can identify and maintain routes to recovery. Four of the signposts identified by people with lived experience are Hope, Opportunity, Power and Education. Hope - Is central to recovery and some would say that without hope recovery is impossible. We base some of our workshops around the principle of hope. Opportunity - Refers to all individuals having the same life chances. The workshops we offer in this section are designed to enable you to maximise opportunities to understand and tell your own recovery story. Power - Individuals have the power within themselves to take control of their own difficulties, services and lives. By understanding what has happened to you, what you need to achieve your own recovery. Our prospectus contains various topics of interest that can help you focus on self-management, choice and responsibility - more insight to help fuel your personal journey. Education - In this context, it has best been summed up by a former student of The Northern Region College. Education is learning about you as a person, putting yourself in the centre of your world. Education is about looking after yourself, looking at your strengths, what is within you and drawing on resources when you are challenged. We provide resources to help you meet such challenges - to learn, maintain and control. In doing so, enabling you to understand and tell your own recovery story. To join us and use your lived experience to educate and help other people. Education is the movement from darkness to light Allan Bloom 4

11 Keeping Ourselves Safe Life can, at times, be hard to cope with, especially if you have experienced traumatic events. Sometimes, it can feel like the only way to feel better or express how you feel is to hurt yourself in some way. What starts as a one-off act can become a habit, which can get out of control. There are lots of myths about selfharm because it is something that many people find difficult to understand. This can make it a taboo, embarrassing subject that is uncomfortable to admit and address. The reality is that many more people self-harm than you think. Often self-harm and suicide are seen as related and therefore those seeking help are reluctant to do so. The aim of this workshop is to explore the facts and realities of self-harm, how it is treated and most importantly, ways in which people manage it or support someone they care about. 22, 29 March 5, 12 April May 1, 8, 15 June , 29 November 6, 13 December , 18, 25 January 1 February 2017 Antrim Library Meadowbank Magherafelt Terrace Row Church, Coleraine Larne Leisure Centre 10
