Engaging young people Emma Amez, Project Manager
This youth engagement work was carried out to help in the re-design of Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMH). Redesign based on the ithrive framework of an integrated, personcentred approach to providing mental health services and care for children, young people and families.
Healthwatch reports on youth mental health My Own Mind pub. Oct 2015 Commissioned by Cambs & Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Thriving published May Commissioned by (CCG) Being Happy, Being Me published May 2017 Commissioned by the CCG, Cambridgeshire County Council, Peterborough City Council Minding Us published Sept 2017 Commissioned by CCG
What we discussed with the young people Education raise awareness/understanding of mental health Information on services (sheet) Language around mental health Mental health versus emotional wellbeing Understanding of words like resilience and thriving Being respectful in the use of language around mental health Their experiences of using youth mental health services Or ideas for services that could work better for them? (surveys/discussion)
Staff feedback We also talked to the staff who work with these young people We asked, What are the real issues for the young people that you work with?
M i n d i n g U s What young people said about mental health Where to turn in a crisis? Mental health issues misunderstood (incl. healthcare workers) Mixed opinions about therapy Lack of knowledge of mental health services Infrequent appointments in therapy Lack of knowledge of mental health issues
Minding Us What young people said about mental health Preference for face to face counselling 77% Prefer trusted adult for information Easier access drop-in clinics/ self-referral Friendly, non-judgemental therapists Flexibility times/locations of counselling Better awareness of mental health in parents and teachers
Being Happy, Being Me What young people said about mental health Going to the GP was felt formal and scary for some. More self-referral options More education needed. Many did not know that mental health is something that we all have. Better access and information around mental health. Young people did not know where to go for help if had not done so before. Use simple clear language. Words like resilience and thriving are hard to understand.
Teachers report needing more training around youth mental health. More early assessment needed More early intervention needed More support and smoother transitions are needed from Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to adult services
Little mental health awareness in schools Seeing more boys coming forward for help with self-harm and anxiety. More students starting to ask for help before using self-harm as coping mech. (Positive shift to do more prevention over selfharm and recovery?)
Stigma improving amongst children but can be less so with parents. (cultural barriers?) Present counselling under funded/ not enough to deal with numbers Some problems with getting GP referrals for mental health problems. A low level service would be useful for students who just need to be listened to.
WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE OUR VISITS? LGBT weather map Spring Common Tough Love theatre project Trip to Belgium workshops around mental health/healthy Lifestyles Accred, shopping voucher! Clare Lodge Education workbook (physical/emotional self-care)
WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE OUR VISITS? Deaf and Hard of Hearing connecting with the Kite Trust to help support their LGBT students. Young carers continue incorporating mental health into their work. Roma Group better understanding/school MH aware
WHAT HAVE WE DONE WITH THIS INFORMATION? Fed back to CCG/Health and Emotional Wellbeing Board Incorporated within the Local Transformation Plan Talking about the feedback at events/engagement opportunities Promoted on our social media site Published in HWC&P website
Since starting the youth engagement around mental health, there have been many new mental health service changes, for example: Keep Your Head Website Platform for mental health information (Cambs) NHS 111 Option 2 The Sanctuary in Cambridge and Peterborough (Cambs & PB NHS/Mind) Non-medical environment 6pm-1am. Referral via First Response Teams (16+) Here : Now Youth Drop-in clinics in Hunts/PB (13-24 yrs)
KOOTH online counselling self refer Free in Cambs/PB (11-24 yrs) PRISM GP-based mental health support (integrated, patientcentred approach to care -?fewer to need specialist care (17-65 years) Autism Spectrum Disorder Service CPFT assessment and intervention service (12-18 yrs) CAMH 17- CPFT some may continue child s services until 18.
