10 Ureteral Stents Introduction and general information Introduction On the following pages, we would like to provide you with a comprehensive portfolio of our ureteral stents. Regardless of the indication, you are sure to find the appropriate product here. Material Polyurethane (PUR) All UROTECH ureteral stents are produced from aliphatic polyurethane (PUR) that has been specifically developed for medical applications. Unlike other materials, PUR shows minimal adhesion to blood cells and has a very low-grade inflammatory effect on tissue due to its physical and chemical properties. PUR becomes soft in a moist environment at body temperature, significantly limiting the risks of traumatic injury to surrounding tissue. Experimental tests and practical experience have shown that PUR is one of the least thrombogenic and most tissuecompatible materials for implantable medical products. Indwelling time All UROTECH ureteral stents are approved for long-term use and can remain inside a patient for several months. The additional layer of phosphorylcholine (PC) on the ureteral stents significantly reduces the risk of encrustation and infection. However, due to the heterogeneity of indications and individual differences between patients, regular follow-up examinations should be performed by the treating physician. measurements In accordance with international norms (ASTMF-1828), the length of our ureteral stents is always indicated without including the J-tip this equals the shaft length (Fig. 1). 12 PHOSPHORYLCHOLINE COATING UROTECH the worldwide only Manufacturer of PC coated Urological Devices More than 10 years Phosphorylcholine coating Phosphorylcholine is a biocompatible and durable sealing of the inner and outer surface of implants to prevent biofi lm formation and subsequent encrustation. It is successfully used not only in urology but also in other medical fi elds (coronary stents, contact lenses). Since 10 years now UROTECH is successfully using Phosphorylcholine coating (PC) on urological devices. Phosphorylcholine verifi ably lowers the risk of encrustations and infections, which results in prolonging the indwelling time of ureteral stents and nephrostomy catheters. The PC coated surfaces show, independent from the material, signifi cant less adsorptions of bacteria. As a result Phosphorylcholine is highly suitable for urological applications. a. b. 13 The Effect is comparable to the camoufl age protection of a chameleon. Chameleons change colour in response to changes in light, or temperature thus protecting itselves from enemies by adopting visually to its surroundings. PC coated ureteral stents use an intelligent thermal and biological camoufl age effect sealing its surface against any environmental infl uences. For devices implanted in the urinary tract, encrustation of the implant`s surface is the most common technical problem. The camouflage effect of PC coated stents Even a short time after implantation a biofi lm formation on the surface of catheters is observed, containing multiple microorganism and extracellular matrices. This biofi lm can be seen as a permanent reservoir of these bacteria, protecting them against antibiotic therapy and maintaining a catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Most of these microorganism are forming ureasplitting enzymes (urease) resulting in an increasing ph-level of urine and in the biofi lm. If the ph-level exceeds the neutral point (ph=7), different soluted molecules precipitate and cristalize on the surface of the implant. An encrustation is formed, the inner lumen of the catheter narrows and the implant doesn t function anymore. Phosphorylcholine coating keeps the ph level on the stent surface constant which minimizes the cristalization of molecules leading to a signifi cantly lower incrustation rate.
