6 Foreword The introduction of robotic technology into modern day operating theatres has changed the way that surgery will be performed. The last 5 years have shown a paradigm shift toward the adoption of robotic surgical techniques by private and academic institutions alike. For example, in just 4 years, the number of radical robotic prostatectomies alone has increased from a mere 300 to over 16,000 in This transition has been driven by an increasingly educated patient population who seek out less morbid ways to address their disease. The introduction of this new technology has allowed for a significant advancement in patient care. By providing a minimally invasive surgical option, patient recovery is faster with outcomes comparable to open surgical techniques. Despite the increasing popularity of this technology, there remains a dearth of literature available to surgeons and patients. Drs. Jeffrey Stock, Michael Esposito, and Vincent Lanteri are to be commended for providing one of the most useful textbooks on robotics in urologic surgery. This textbook has been organized to be as complete as possible in presenting accepted robotic applications to treat common urological problems. The book begins with a chapter on the history of robotic surgery. Following this, a description of basic instrumentation and techniques is presented. Chapters follow on specific techniques that are structured to discuss potential applications as well as contraindications. As each procedure is described, attention is given to patient positioning and trocar placement. Detailed directions given in the text demonstrate the critical steps for each procedure. The last section of the book reviews robotic suturing, complications, and training and credentialing. For the practicing urologist, this text serves as a needed educational guide to understanding the scope of robotic procedures performed. This book is written in a way that clinicians, researchers, and in parts lay people will understand and appreciate.
