14 Unit 2: Equine Diet and Nutrition sample mark grid General marking guidance All learners must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first learner in exactly the same way as they mark the last. Mark grids should be applied positively. Learners must be rewarded for what they have shown they can do rather than be penalised for omissions. Examiners should mark according to the mark grid, not according to their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie. All marks on the mark grid should be used appropriately. All the marks on the mark grid are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always award full marks if deserved. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks, if the learner s response is not rewardable according to the mark grid. Where judgement is required, a mark grid will provide the principles by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited. When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark grid to a learner s response, a senior examiner should be consulted. Specific marking guidance The mark grids have been designed to assess learners work holistically. Rows in the grids identify the assessment focus/outcome being targeted. When using a mark grid, the best fit approach should be used. Examiners should first make a holistic judgement on which band most closely matches learners response and place it within that band. Learners will be placed in the band that best describes their answer. The mark awarded within the band will be decided based on the quality of the answer in response to the assessment focus/outcome and will be modified according to how securely all bullet points are displayed at that band. Marks will be awarded towards the top or bottom of that band depending on how they have evidenced each of the descriptor bullet points. 15 Activity 1 Indicative content Answers will be credited according to the learner s demonstration of knowledge and understanding using the indicative content and levels descriptors below. The indicative content that follows is not prescriptive and answers should be rewarded for other relevant answers. Storage: hygiene, security, vermin, e.g. reference to correct stacking procedures and restricting access to maintain health and safety, avoiding fire, protection from moisture/rain, avoiding contamination from vermin Problems associated with incorrect storage, e.g. dust, mould, decrease in nutritional content, potential ill health, wastage. Feed records and resourcing, e.g. order history, feed charts and feeding boards Appraisal and selection: e.g. reference to availability, quality, cost, palatability Preparation and presentation: hay nets, hay feeders, soaking Mark scheme refer to the guidance on the cover of the document for how to apply levels-based mark schemes * Level 0 0 No rewardable material Level Demonstrates isolated knowledge and understanding of principles and practices of feed management. Provides limited consideration of variables affecting feed management. Generic statements may be presented rather than connections being made so that lines of reasoning are unclear. Level Demonstrates mostly accurate knowledge and understanding of principles and practices of feed management. Provides partial consideration of variables affecting feed management. Discussion evidences connections being made so that lines of reasoning are clear. Level Demonstrates detailed knowledge and understanding of principles and practices of feed management. Provides detailed consideration of variables affecting feed management. Discussion evidences connections being made so that lines of reasoning are detailed and clear. 19 Activity 4 Indicative content Answers will be credited according to the learner s demonstration of knowledge and understanding using the indicative content and levels descriptors below. The indicative content that follows is not prescriptive and answers should be rewarded for other relevant answers. Equine diet suited to constant grazing as hindgut fermenters Stomach constantly secretes hydrochloric acid so gaps in the mucosa lead to breakdown of the stomach lining ulcers Signs include pain, poor appetite, weight loss, behavioural changes, poor body condition, rough hair coat Common in racehorses, as they are often unable to graze constantly and so periods of fasting cause bouts of increased acidity Need to know Zac s body condition score, current health and age to plan his diet effectively Feed according to temperament as it will impact the type, amount and frequency of feed given Zac ideally should receive long times of turnout/and or ad lib forage, particularly alfalfa hay Zac s diet should not be cereal based Some medications to reduce gastric acid secretion are available in the form of pastes and should be fed on an empty stomach and before exercise Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Equine Management Unit 2: Diet and Nutrition - Sample Assessment Materials Pre-publication version 2.1 September 2018 Pearson Education Limited
20 Mark scheme refer to the guidance on the cover of the document for how to apply levels-based mark schemes * Level 0 0 No rewardable material Level Demonstrates isolated elements of knowledge and understanding, there will be major gaps or misconceptions Few of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question Limited discussion which contains generic assertions rather than considering different aspects and the relationship between them. Level Demonstrates some accurate knowledge and understanding, with occasional significant gaps or misconceptions Some of the points made will be relevant, but the link to the context in the question will not always be clear A partially developed discussion which considers some different aspects, with occasional consideration of how they interrelate. Level Demonstrates mostly accurate knowledge and understanding with only minor gaps or omissions Most of the points made will be relevant, and there will be clear links to the context in the question. A developed discussion which considers a range of different aspects and considers how they interrelate in a generally sustained way. Level Demonstrates accurate and detailed knowledge and understanding. Points made will be highly relevant, and there will be secure links to the context in the question. A comprehensive, well-developed and logical discussion which considers a broad range of different aspects and how they interrelate in a sustained way.
