1 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standardization Organization (GSO) Final Project GSO 05/FDS 848 / 2008 Flavoured artificial drink powders Prepared by: The Gulf Technical Committee for the specifications of Food and Agricultural pro ducts This document is a standard specification draft from the Gulf dis tributors. It has been distributed in order for comments and notes concerning its content to be expressed. Therefore it is prone to change or replacement. It cannot be referred to as a Gulf Standard Specification except after it has been authorized from the Board of Directors.
2 Introduction The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standardization Organization (GSO) is a regional organization that includes in its members the National Specifications and Standardization offices in the Arab Gulf States. One of the duties of the council is the preparation of the Gulf Specification Standards using professional technical committees. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standardization Organ ization (GSO) has performed an update of the Gulf standard specifications No. 848/1997 flavoured artificial drinking powders, as part of the technical committee p rogram No. 5, which specialises in the Food and Agricultural Products Specifications. The Su ltanate of Oman has conducted the preparation of this project specification. This specification was adopted as a G ulf technical regulation in the meeting of the Board of Directors No. ( ), which was held on / / A.H, which is / / A.D. to rescind the Specification No. 848/1997 and replace it. 1
3 Flavoured artificial drink powders 1- The Area and Application scope: This Specification standard implements the fruit flavoured artificial drink powders, and does not have competence to natural fruit flavo ured drink powders. 1- Supplementary References: 2/1 m k g number 9 Packaged food articles. 2/2 m k g number 21 Health conditions for the food plants and their employees. 2/3 m k g number 22 Test methods for the colour materials used in the food products. 2/4 m k g number 20 Methods to estimate the contaminating metal elements in the food products. 2/5 m k g number 180 Taking samples of paediatric vegetarian foods. 2/6 m k g number 181 Ways to chemically test children s vegetable foods. 2/7 m k g number 193 Ways to inspect and test the wheat flour. 2/8 m k g number 242 Green vegetables and fruit produce Ethanol estimate. 2/9 m k g number 707 Flavouring agents that are allowed to be used in food materials. 2/10 m k g number 840 Ways to estimate the allowed sweeteners in the food materials part 1. 2/11 m k g number 995 Allowed sweeteners in the food products. 2/12 m k g number 1305 Ways to estimate the vitamins in the vegetarian paediatric foods. 2/13 International Codex specifications number 192, the General Specification of food. 3- Definitions: Fruit flavoured artificial drink powder : Product of one or more flavo uring agents or the natural equivalent or natural fruit with some of the material s that are allowed to be added (item 5/2/4, 5/2/5), and when mixed with water or (water and sugar) produces a drink that resembles fruit juice. 4- Powder types: 4/1 Sweetened with sugar. 4/2 Unsweetened. 4/3 Sweetened with artificial sweeteners. 2
4 5- Requirements: 5/1 The flavoured artificial drink powder should be available in the following in the following flavours: 5/1/1 It should be homogenous, free of any clustering. 5/1/2 It should be free of an y impurities. 5/1/3 The product should be completely soluble when retrieved with standard lukewarm water quantity and regular shaking. 5/1/4 The raw materials used in th e manufacturing must match the Gulf Standard Specifications which they relate to. 5/1/5 It should be equipped under appropriate health conditions that correspond to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/2). 5/1/6 The moisture content should not exceed 3.5% of the weight of the sweetened product, and 4.5% of the weight of the unsweetened product. 5/2 The following must be available on the code card in the output drink after it has been melted in water: 5/2/1 It should be free of sediments and clustering. 5/2/2 It should be free of Ethanol. 5/2/3 It should have a colour and similar flavour for its similar flavour in the natural juice. 5/2/4 Optional items: 5/2/4/1 Natural sweeteners: Sucrose corn syrup dextrose honey refined sugar.etc. 5/2/4/2 Artificial sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners that have been approved to use, which must match the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/11). 5/2/4/3 Vitamins and minerals: The following vitamins and minerals can be used, and the ratios described next to each of them should be followed : - The Folic acid content should range between 40 and 80 micrograms / 100 ml. - The Thiamine content should range between 0.08 and 0.11 mg / ml. - The Vitamin C content should range between 0.24 and 0.48 mg / 100 ml. - The Iron content should range between 0.56 and 0.8 mg / 100 ml. - The Potassium content should range between 100 and 200 mg / 100 ml. 5/2/5 Nutritional additives: It is only allowed to use nutritional additives that are specified in the international codex under the item 848 / 2008 number /2 /13 which regards to food category and food category in the specified ratios and the additions listed in Table No. 3 according to the methods of good manufacturing. 3
5 5/2/6 The metal contaminating elements should not exceed the amounts which are shown next to them: Arsenic 1.0 Ppm (Part per million) Copper 0.2 Ppm Lead 2.0 Ppm Zinc 0.5 Ppm Tin Ppm 6- Sample taking: Samples are taken according to the methods mentioned in the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/5). 7- Testing methods: 7/1 Testing is done according to the following methods mentioned in the Gulf Standard Specifications: 7/1/1 Impurities: Impurities are detected according to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/7). 7/1/2 Humidity content: The humidity content is determined accor ding to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/6). 7/1/3 Ethanol detection: Ethanol content is detected according to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/8). 7/1/4 Artificial sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners are determined according to the Gul f Standard Specifications (item 2/10). 7/1/5 Vitamin estimate: Vitamin estimates are determined according to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/12). 7/1/6 Colouring materials: Detection of the colo uring materials is done according to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/3). 7/1/7 Metal contaminating items: Metal contamination items estimates are determined according to the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/4). 7/2 Tests: These tests are conducted on the provided sample according to item (6). The tests are all that is required to specify how it is matching with the specified items 848/
6 8- Illustrations: Without any interference with the standards specified and mentioned by the Gulf Standard Specifications (item 2/1), the label on the packaging should include the following: 8/1 The phrase (Artificial drink powders flavoured with ) 8/2 Percentage of recovery with water. 8/3 The powder that has been sweetened with either sugar or artificial sweeteners or that has not been sweetened (item 3). 8/4 Type and amounts of vitamins and minerals in case the powder has been supplemented by any of these items. 8/5 Nutritional Data (the amount of energy in calories, the amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, sugars, vitamins, and addit ional minerals in grams) / 100 grams of powder. 9- Packaging, Transportation and Storage: 9/1 Packaging: The product must be put in clean, healthy, appropriate, undamaged, locked and moisture resistant packaging. 9/2 Transportation: The product must be transported with a guaranteed protection against mechanical or pollution damage. 9/3 Storage: The product must be stored in warehouses with good ventilation away from heat, humidity and pollution sources. 5
