2 REPORT OF THE PROGRAMME CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH September, 2018 (RASHTRIYA POSHAN MAH ) Food and nutrition is essential component for each and every human being. Holistic nourishment not only provides healthy body but it is essential for all-round development of our mind and soul. The nutrition of the pregnant mothers have important role over the physical mental and intellectual development of the fetus. In the same way nutrition have important role over first two years of life because in this time maximum growth and development occurred. It is experienced that parents of disabled children have so many quarries about their child s nutrition. The parents are not able to provide sufficient attention on nutritional care to their children as parents focus more on the disabilities related issues. But according to Rights of Persons with Disability Act, 2016they need equal attention on taking care of the nutrition and health of children. The Government of India is celebrating Rastriya Poshon Mah in the Month of September, 2018 under Poshon Abhiyan Jan Andolan, as part of Prime Minister s overreaching scheme for Holistic Nourishment. In this regard, the Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India under the guidelines of NITI Aayog has planned multilevel action plans to celebrate Rastriya Poshon Mah in the Month of September, The National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (DIVYANGJAN) as part of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment under Department of Empowerment of Person with Disabilities (DIVYANGJAN) is celebrating this programme on 27/09/2018 and 28/09/2018 to focus on national attention on this important issue and to create awareness in society and to sensitize different group of beneficiaries regarding nutritional issues. We have organized the program in such a way as to reinforce the parents, students of secondary, higher secondary level and nongovernment organization (NGO) regarding nutrition and its benefits to their children in every aspects of our society. The two days programme was planned and coordinated by Mrs. Subhra Srimani, Head, Department of Rehabilitation Nursing. The following events were conducted in this programme- REGISTRATION AND INAUGURAL SESSION- The program was initiated by the registration of the participants. About 200 persons were registered in this programme. Among them 56 were parents of children within 0-3 years of age, 88 students from various secondary and higher secondary schools (CBSC< ICSC and West Bengal Board) and UG and PG students of professional courses and 20 participants were from NGOs from different districts

3 of West Bengal and remaining others were staff members of the institute. Main program started with opening song followed by felicitation of Dr. A. Biswas,Director of N.I.L.D.; Dr. Parbati Sengupta, eminent and senior pediatrician from Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan, Prof. Debnath Chaudhuri, former Head of the department of Biochemistry and nutrition, All India Institute of hygiene and Public Health were present at the inaugural session of the program. In this program different areas of child nutrition was highlighted and the theme of National Nutrition Week and Month is also unfolded. Dr Parbati Sengupta pointed out in details and explains the nutrition of the pre-natal mothers and children below 1000 days and its importance. 4 Cooking demonstration on preparation of nutritious food- Exhibition on low cost nutritious diet for 1000 days children has started with the supervision of Mrs. Manju Mukherjee, Asst. professor at Dept. of rehabilitation nursing, NILD,Kolkata; Mrs. Durga Dutta, Former Clinical Instructor, West Bengal Govt. college of nursing; Mrs. Debjani Banerjee, Executive committee member, society for Nutrition and Dietetics; Mrs. Shalini Bhattacharya, Executive committee member, Society for Nutrition and Dietetics. Raw materials has been showed. We have prepared several chats and posters on breast feeding and its importance, techniques of breast feeding, process of food preparation, infant feeding techniques, food list of weaning, importance of weaning. We have prepared eight low cost nutritious food items which can be served to children after weaning period. The items were lassi, soya milk, ORS water, Dalia payes, vegetable soup, Egg omelet in water, boiled egg, Mixed khichdi, mixed chapatti with vegetables. All are prepared by maintaining hygiene and cleanliness. We have also explained the importance of low cost nutritious food, their ingredients and preparation, food value of each ingredient. We have also served all prepared dishes to parents and children who have attended the cooking demonstration programme. 53 participants were present in the programme coming from different areas. 5 Hands on training on food hygiene and nutritious food preparation- Hands on training on hygienic food preparation is also done for mothers. They have prepared mixed chapatti, Daliya- payes with soyamilk. Cooking demonstration on preparation of Nutritious foods LECTURE CUM INTERACTIVE SESSION- Mrs Soma Kundu Mondal dietician of Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan delivered her lecture on the topic of Importance Of Weaning & Food Value Conservation.She described the complementary feeding period and the type of food given during this period.simple weaning recepies like Chira barfi, Wheat gram laddu,pancake,bengal gram biscuit,masala muri, Sandwich,Suji barfi with food value are discussed.she informed theways to retain food value. Ms. Arpita Paul, State Nutrition Consultant, NHM West Bengal ( UNICEF supported) delivered a precious informative lecture on existing nutritional programme for mother and child in state and central level. She has maintioned MAA (Mothers Absolute Affection) programme, Janani Sishu Suraksha Yojona (JSSY), Janani Suraksha Karyakram (JSK), ICDS, Diarrhoea Prevention Programme. She also told about Nutrition Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Parbati Sengupta, eminent pediatrician from Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan delivered her lecture on the topic Importance of Pre-natal Diet Birth of a Healthy Child.. She given a clear idea about what is food and what is nutrient. An unhealthy, unbalanced diet may cause many problems in child like Low birth weight, Birth defects, Learning disabilities and in mother various health problems obesity, hypertension, diabetes etc. She described the macro and micro nutrients and there sources essential for fetal development. The lecture is followed by a discussion with the parents. Parents meet their quarries during this session. The discussion was fully effective by complete participation of the parents. Whole session enriched the knowledge level of the participants.

6 Interactive session DEVELOPMENT OF LEAFLET- A leaflet is developed on Nutrition for the children within 1000 days old as a print material which is thought provoking and communicate the message related to nutrition to the society at a large. It was distributed among parents, NGO workers and students for awareness generation. Leaflet in English and Bengali

7 SLOGAN AND POSTER COMPETITION- Poster competition and slogan competition held on 28/09/2018. The theme of poster was Work together for child nourishment,well nourished baby-mother s satisfaction, Go further with food and the theme of slogan was save food and save child. Participants were from various schools of WBBSE, ICSC and CBSC boards and also Undergraduate and postgraduate students from NILD, NIEPID, AYJNISHD, NIEPVD of kolkata. Competition was judged by Dr Debnath Chaudhuri and Mr. Bratin Sarkar. Opening of poster and slogan competition PANEL DISCUSSION- Evaluation of Poster and slogan competition is going on Panel discussion was commenced regarding Holistic Nourishment for Children within 1000 Days Old.Feeding technique and food hygiene was discussed by Dr Alpanamyee Bera,importance of nutrition on preventing disability discussed by Dr. Subhasish Pati and Ms Piyali Biswas discussed about importance of macro and micro nutrients for children. They shared their valuable experience among the audience followed by interactive session.the program was adorned by 20 students (Boys and girls) from different IX, X, XI, XII standards students from C. B. S. C. and I.C.S.C schools, 20 workers from different NGOs and 50 UG and PG professional trainee students.the programme was very effective and also improves awareness among the participants.

8 PRIZE DISTRIBUTION- Panel discussion Lastly the prize distribution ceremony among the students of various wings for their poster and slogan competition was really encouraging and good message was collected from this competition. Prize distribution ceremony Media coverage- The programme information was published in the newspapers like Dainik Jagoron (Hindi), Pratidin Patrika (Bengali). The total programme was scientific, informative and creative. All participants are enlightened and elevated. Students and parents participation was excellent and response of NGOs was a demand generating for more programme on the days ahead. All participants were provided foods. As a whole the programme was complete and successful.
