2 How many enzymes do you need with your food? The number of enzyme capsules you need depends on your body. the amount of fat and protein in the food you eat and the milk you drink. the type of enzyme you take. Most people have to change the amount of enzymes they take with fatty foods and larger meals. If they don't they can: have lots of tummy aches. have smelly poos. lose weight.

3 You need to take enzymes every time you eat food or milky drinks. Let's think. How do you know when you need more? If you eat more fatty foods you need more enzymes.

6 Activity How many enzymes do you take with these meals? Check with your mum or dad if you are not sure. Breakfast 2 slices toast = enzymes fruit juice = enzymes Add up enzymes for breakfast = enzymes. Midday Meal Hot Dog = enzymes banana= enzymes 200ml milk = enzymes Add up enzymes for midday meal= enzymes. Evening Meal Fried Chicken = enzymes potatoes +butter Chips = enzymes Ice-cream = enzyme Add up enzymes for evening meal= enzymes. Have you noticed you need more enzymes when the food you eat has more fat? Do you need more enzymes with fatty foods? Y/N

7 Meals that have the same amount of fat need similar amounts of enzymes. 1 fried egg +1 piece toast+butter /marg +juice Cereal with milk 1 Glass of milk 2 pieces toast+ Butter/ marg plus milk These meals contain a similar amount of fat. Meals with similar fat : Jacket potato and baked beans and butter Ham /chicken/ turkey sandwich Roast chicken vegetables and mashed potato Tinned spaghetti on 2 pieces toast+ butter/marg These meals below need more enzymes. Why? Because they have more fat to break down. Cheese sandwich Pizza Fish and chips Sausage rolls Curry and rice Chinese meals Burger and chips

8 SNACKS WITH A SIMILAR AMOUNT OF FAT FOODS THAT CONTAIN THE SAME AMOUNT OF FAT AS A CUP OF FULL FAT MILK 1 full fat yogurt 1 small fromage frais (60 g) 1 chocolate mousse/1 scoop ice-cream/1 bowl milky pudding 1 slice bread and margarine/butter (¼ oz) Funsize chocolate/2 finger Kit Kat/1 creme egg/ 1 Twix tea break 1 small cake/scone 5 Jaffa cakes 5 rich tea 2 custard creams 1 chocolate biscuit 1 Penguin 1 Club biscuit FOODS THAT CONTAIN THE SAME AMOUNT OF FAT AS A MUG OF FULL FAT MILK 2 slices bread and butter 1 pot noodle 1 packet crisps 10 chips 1 oz (30 g) peanuts 2 oz chocolate bar 4 finger Kit-Kat Mars bar Flake 1 doughnut 1 Fortisip/1 Build-up/1 Ensure Plus

9 How do you know if you re taking enough enzymes? You need to be Growing Gaining weight Not having signs of malabsorption Malabsorption means: Lots of poos Loose broken-up poos Smelly poos Greasy, oily floating poos Pale brown /orange yellow colour poos Lots of wind Big tummy Tummy pains Eating lots of food because you are losing it in your poos Losing weight If you have no signs of malabsorption Then you are taking enough enzymes. Talk to your dietitian: About how many enzymes you should take with food and milky drinks. If you have any problems or questions about enzymes.

10 Things to remember Meals which contain fried foods, chips or pastry are more fatty than roast meat dinners. A cheese sandwich will contain more fat than a ham or turkey sandwich. Cheese contains a lot of fat. Remember to take enzymes with all snacks e.g. chocolate, crisps and milk. When more fat is eaten enzymes are usually increased.
