Clam Digestive System (Corbicula Fluminea) Josie McCartney
Digestive System
Structures Inhalant/incurrent siphon: Reaches and grabs hold of nearby food and brings it back to the clam. The function is to bring food to the clam. Gills: Separate food and water, are covered in cilia. The function is to separate water and food. Labial palp: Similar to lips, sifts through the food to reject silt or byproduct. The function is to remove the silt from the nutrients the clam needs. Cilia: sweep food to the labial palp. The function is to direct food to the labial palp to be digested.
Structures cont. Mouth:opening that leads to the esophagus. The function is to hold food before entering the esophagus. Esophagus: transports food from mouth to stomach. The function is to transport food to the stomach. Stomach: breaks down food. The function is to break down food. Digestive gland: breaks down food even further. The function is to break down further so the nutrients can be absorbed. Intestine: absorbs proteins and nutrients. The function is to absorb the nutrients into the bloodstream.
Structures cont. Rectum: Place where waste is held before it is expelled. The function is to store waste temporarily. Anus: Place where waste is expelled. The function is to be the place where waste is expelled. Exhalant/Excurrent Siphon: The structure that carries excretions, carbon dioxide, and gametes (in season) away from the clam. The function is to be the place where waste is expelled.
Obtaining Food Clams are filter feeders. They eat algae, dust, and particles in the water. They mainly eat phytoplankton. Water enters through the incurrent siphon and is filtered by the gills.
Digestion of Food Food enters through the incurrent siphon and goes to the gills. The gills separate water from nutrients, the nutrients get trapped in the sticky mucus covering the gills. The cilia on the gills push the nutrients to the labial palp. The labial palp sifts through and separates silt and nutrients. The nutrients pass through the mouth, down the esophagus, into the stomach, where it is digested. It enters the digestive gland where it is digested further. The nutrients pass into the intestine where they are absorbed into the bloodstream. The waste then enters the rectum and is expelled out the anus.
Nutrient Absorption Nutrients are absorbed in the intestine into the bloodstream. Needed nutrients are absorbed and others are expelled as waste. Similar to nutrient absorption of a human or rat.
Waste Elimination After the nutrients have been removed in the intestine, the waste enters the rectum. Waste waits in the rectum before being expelled out the anus. The anus is a part of the excurrent siphon.
Structural Adaptations Hard exterior shell protects soft body from predators. Predators include crayfish, black buffalo, channel catfish, Mozambique tilapia, and largemouth bass. Incurrent and excurrent siphon allows the clam to stay burrowed and effectively takes in food and removes waste.
Digestive Adaptations The incurrent siphon allows the clam to obtain food while still being burrowed in the sand. This keeps them hidden from predators and supports their habits or burrowing in the sand. The mucus around the gills allows the clam to effectively separate water and nutrients. This supports the clam s diet of filter feeding.
