Psittacus Catalonia SL is a family-run business created to devote its main activity to the psittacine birds (parrots) as avian pets, drawing on the manual psittacines breeding experience collected by the family for years. The company started its activity in 1998 with the creation of the African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) breeding centre. This was the trigger that allowed us to go deeply in the development of complete feed products for psittacines, which are present on the market under the brand PSITTACUS. Since then and up to the present, the company has diversified its operating scope and now devotes special attention to the research. The passion for birds has led to the development of food products also for other pet birds. The SERINUS range focuses on products for Fringillidae birds and it has scheduled the application to other passerine birds (Estrildidae...). Our work team is available to our customers and we kindly welcome any suggestions to help us to improve the quality of our products and the wellbeing of our birds. Our strength lies in continuous research. The birds themselves are after all the ones who ratify the suitability of our nutritional approaches. Our purpose is clear: to step further into excellence. Excellence in reproductive rates, in plumage, in vigour, in resistance to illness...; in the factors that we breeders know as important. Xavier Viader Teresa Masuet 2
In order to successfully breed and care for exotic psittacines, it is essential to offer them a diet that fulfils their nutritional needs. The diets in the wild of the several species of psittacines are very diverse. Lories, for instance, basically feed on nectar and pollen from flowers and fruit. For that, they have developed a long tongue with a brush-shaped tip which enables them to obtain nectar and pollen from the flowers. African Grey s diet consists mainly in palm nuts, extraordinarily rich in saturated fats (palmitic acid) and unsaturated fats (oleic acid). It is therefore necessary for the diet we offer to be as similar as possible to the bird s diet in the wild. This does not mean we should give them the same food, but the composition of nutrients of the diet supplied must be as similar as possible to the original diet and foster the same feeding behaviour (loris should be able to lick and African Grey Parrot should be able to hold its food with their feet). Guided by knowledge on the feeding habits of these birds in the wild, we have formulated diets which reproduce almost to perfection the ideal nutritional intake in the shape of extruded food. Each age and species of psittacines has their own specific needs. PSITTACUS and SERINUS ranges make possible to choose the most suitable product. 3
Products A proposal of complete food and able to meet the nutritional, physical and psychological requirements of our pet birds, must be daily constituted by a portion of high quality extruded food, cleanliness and fresh water. We will also provide fruit and/ or fresh vegetables (depending on the species). PSITTACUS and SERINUS extruded food must be the fundamental basic food. It ensures the proper supply of nutrients at each stage of development of the bird and, in addition, it allows to cover specific needs of weaning, breeding and recovering, to name a few. The extruded food enables the ingest and the absorption of nutrients in a constant balanced way, eliminating the risk of nutritional deficiencies and the illness resulting from them. Depending on the species in question, it will be most appropriate one formula or another of the range. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide variety to the food and entertainment for the animal. The supply of these vegetables is a powerful tool for environmental enrichment. To offer fruits and vegetables daily is a very simple example of sensory stimulation because they have the opportunity to try different flavors and textures manipulating objects of various shapes and sizes and seeing different colors (to take into account that parrots have a chromatic vision higher than ours). The amount of consumption of these foods is not relevant because its value is found in promoting natural behaviors and not in the delivery of nutrients, which it is already covered by the extruded food. 4
Benefits 1These products are complete foods. They contain all the nutrients required to the birds that are addressed. Each portion that the bird consume, contains all necessary nutrients and in the right proportion. 3 It must be supplied dry, as it is packaged. 2 4 They are intended for being supplied as an exclusive and unique diet. They can also be used as a fundamental component of mixed diets (extruded food + seeds). Animals consume the entire complete food supplied; there is no waste. 5 6 Their high stability and the fact that the animals do not waste, makes them likely to be supplied at long time intervals, conditioned only by the capacity of feeders. Birds can not select the different components of formulas and eat the most appealing. This problem is particularly important when the diet is based on mixtures of seeds and especially when there is more than one bird in the same cage. In these cases, the individual or dominant individuals, which always eat first, select the seeds that are most appealing; individuals of lower hierarchical rank eat what remains. Consequently, none of them ingest the diet which was theoretically formulated and expected to be consumed homogeneously. 7 9 The everyday handling is simple and have quick resolution. It minimize and simplify the tasks. The task of cleaning the seeds from the feeders is completely removed. This saves: The time required for cleaning and recycling seeds. Doubts whether a feeder contains seeds or just shells. 8 Birds almost do not get dirty around the cage. As no waste is produced (shell seeds), practically nothing falls to the floor. 1 0 It greatly facilitates the control of food level available in the feeders. We can control the feed existence with the naked eye. 5

Extruded food selector Extruded food for juveniles Maintenance extruded food Psittacus/Ara/Poicephalus High energy/ Omega Extruded foods are balanced mixes that make it impossible for the bird to pick because they are consumed entirely. They constitute the 100% of the bird s diet, although they allow us to add other types of food in order to offer variety, whenever the extruded food constitute no less than 70-80% of the total intake. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be given as a complement without limits. Making the extruded food appealing is fundamental in the case of birds and this is one of our main achievements. 9 Hand-feeding formulas selector Hand-feeding formulas They are intended for hand-feeding parrot babies and as support diet for sick adults being treated. They have been formulated to constitute the 100% of the baby parrot diet during the growing stage: from hatching to emancipation. During the weaning stage, hand-feeding formula will be gradually replaced by the solid foods best suited to each species. Check the description of the hand-feeding formulas and choose the most suitable according to the characteristics and age of the chick you are raising. As a general rule, medium and large size parrots eat between 7 ml and 10 ml of formula on each feeding for every 100 g of body weight. The small psittacines eat more: up to 16 ml for every 100 g of body weight. The concentration of solid food recommended when preparing the hand-feeding formula is 20-25%. 19 Extruded food, how to use them? They represent a new concept in Fringillidae birds diet because they replicate the part truly consumed of the ancestral diets. These are complete foods. Birds get all the necessary nutrients in order to enjoy great health, excellent vigour and optimal plumage quality. Formulas are designed to be supplied as an exclusive diet. Optionally, they can be supplemented with seeds. They offer to breeders a powerful tool: to facilitate the management. Since they do not contain shells, birds eat the product entirely. It save time and improve the cleaning. The product may be supplied dry and in mesh feeders or external feeders. It is advisable to give vegetable leaves regularly to provide entertainment to the animals. Formulas are available as maintenance and breeding versions. These enables you to choose the most adequate product in each situation. For breeding birds is advisable to start supplying the Breeding Formula a month before of the beginning of the reproductive season and to keep feeding them until the moult is complete. During the reproductive rest period, the Maintenance Formula is the most suitable. For ornamental and singing birds, the Maintenance Formula is the usual product. Optionally, the Breeding Formula will be supplied in order to facilitate the moult and to induce the rut in singing males. It is important to remember that no vitamin or mineral supplements should be given to parrots whose basic diet are our complete formulas. 18
Hand-feeding formula, eggfood and calcium grit Hand-feeding formulas simplify the hand-rearing process and ensure the excellent growth of the chicks. It must be prepared with tepid water. It should not be kept warm or reheat once mixed. Once it is prepared, it should have a similar texture of a shaken yogurt (25% of solid food). Our soft tube is the ideal accessory for the correct supply of this creamy formula. Eggfood is used to stimulate the chick-feeding. We will provide reproductive birds with a wet diet, prepared with our Eggfood Dry and mashed vegetables (broccoli, carrot...). It is important to initiate the supply from the moment that starts the laying, so that parents get used to it before the birth of the chicks. Calcium Grit must always be available to the birds. They perfectly regulate the intake of calcium according to their needs (for laying period, during the growth...). 19
