Semen, unrelated females and sires were sourced from various breeders throughout the United States. Our internal goal was to provide ourselves with the ability to improve the line under a commercially-oriented objective without continually outsourcing Hampshire genetics. Since the base generation was born in 2008, selection has been geared toward ridding the detrimental allele of the RN gene. Babcock Genetics now has the largest United States sow herd that is Napole-gene free (RN- free). In 2008, our nucleus herd was moved into group sow housing and continues to thrive. We have succeeded in developing a docile, robust, large framed market hog that is a fast growing and efficient feed converter. Providing production with minimum costs and maximum profit. 3 Babcock s Hampshire Rankings: Meat Quality All Babcock Hampshire animals are tested 100% negative for the detrimental genotype of RN and HAL genes. With the help of university and packing expertise, a large dataset has been acquired consisting of numerous carcass and meat quality phenotypes, off-test information, as well as a DNA sample. As a result, a specific marker set has been identified and used to interrogate genomic regions, selecting those that have the genotypes best suited to provide us with high quality pork. Five years ago we moved our nucleus herd into group sow housing without problems. Our customers average less than 5% sow death loss annually and average 90% farrowing rates in group sow housing.
