4 Traceability: The ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item (pig) by means of documented recorded identification. OUR GOAL: To raise healthy hogs and produce a safe, wholesome, and nutritious product Traceability is an important part of fulfilling both aspects As producers, we have an obligation to adhere to our ethical principles and to provide a safe, wholesome product. 6 Cull Breeding Animal Tagging Customers are demanding greater transparency and certification. Using official PIN tags Provides greater disease surveillance efficiency Allows for more effective and cost efficient monitoring Enhances pre harvest traceability Could help keep international markets open should a disease of concern occur

7 Cull Breeding Animal Tagging In affect as of January 1, 2015 Individual identification of breeding stock headed to harvest, transitioned from backtags to official USDA approved ear tags. Key Role Role in PQA providing an excellent way to identify boars and sows during production, therefore record keeping and movement Could expedite the investigation, if a disease outbreak arose. It would identify the site and aid officials in quickly containing the outbreak Demonstrates to our trading partners that we have a valid pre harvest traceability system.

9 National Swine Health Information Center In November 2014, National Pork Board s board of directors approved funding Focus efforts on implementing industry preparedness for disease challenges that could affect US swine herds $15 million by the Pork Checkoff fund for 5 years Governed by: Board consisting of reps from NPB, NPPC, AASV, and at large pork producers Purpose: improve pork industries preparedness for swine diseases with the combined resources of swine veterinarians, producers, researchers, diagnosticians, and state and federal animal health officers. Work with the Institute for Infectious Diseases at Texas A&M To help facilitate swine health data analysis

10 National Swine Health Information Center Center will add to and not duplicate the efforts and abilities of NPB, NPPC, and AASV 3 big goals 1.) Monitor Foreign and endemic disease risks and vulnerabilities Gather and coordinate swine disease risk information from a variety of private, company and government resources 2.) Fund and manage research needed to improve diagnostic capabilities to detect emerging production diseases 3.) Support epidemiological analysis of diseases that will help improve swine health on the farm

16 Common Swine Industry Audits Third Party Auditing was initiated by some packers NPB responded by initiating a Industry Audit Task Force Producers, Veterinarians, Packers, Retail and Food Service, and Animal Scientists National Pork Board announced an effort for a common swine audit in June Wanted a credible, affordable solution to assure onfarm animal well being

17 Common Swine Industry Audits Incorporates Scientific Evidence, Ethics and Economics seeking a balance to remain sustainable Purpose Meet Individual company and customer needs Outcome based criteria related to pig welfare identify and measure key areas Clarity to producers regarding the standards and expectations = defines a single approach Minimize duplication and prevent oversampling statistical approach that is consistent Ensure greater integrity of the audit process true thirdparty assessment
