Ratings over 30% are considered excessive; 100% represents complete kill. Yields are harvested and reported for studies designed with replications. PLOT APPLICATIONS Herbicide treatments are applied with special plot sprayers. Unless otherwise noted, applications are made at 20 gpa and 35 psi using flat fan tips. Each treatment component is measured separately and mixed with water at application. Weed evaluations consist of visual ratings; averaged over replications or multiple ratings per plot. Ratings below 70-75% are considered less than commercially acceptable control; ratings greater than 90% represent a high level of effectiveness and generally reduce significant competition effects.

The same variety was planted in each treatment. Most of the PRE treatments resulted in very good weed control. Verdict (saflufenacil + dimethenamid) and Surestart (acetochlor + flumetsulam + clopyralid) do not contain atrazine, but provided moderate to good wild buckwheat control. Balance Flexx (isoxaflutole) resulted in slightly less grass control than the PRE treatments that contain acetochlor or metolachlor. Nearly all treatments resulted in nearly complete weed control after the POST treatments were applied. This demonstrated that Liberty Link and conventional programs could provide similar weed control as Roundup Ready programs. One application of Roundup resulted in some late season grass and wild buckwheat escapes. However, adding atrazine or other some other tank mix partners controlled these escapes. It was interesting that Surestart applied POST did not greatly improve wild buckwheat control even though it contains clopyralid. Ignite (glufosinate) + atrazine resulted in some barnyardgrass escapes, but other tank mixes resulted in nearly complete grass control. Corn yield was similar among all treatments.

The same variety was planted in each treatment. Several of the PRE treatments resulted in very good weed control, but there were some wild buckwheat escapes in the Surestart (acetochlor + flumetsulam + clopyralid) and Harness (acetochlor) treatments. Nearly all treatments resulted in good weed control after the POST treatments were applied. In the conventional programs, the PRE followed by POST treatments resulted in the most consistent weed control. In the Roundup Ready programs, Roundup alone resulted in some weed escapes but PRE s or tank mix partners resulted in nearly complete weed control. In the Liberty Link programs, Surestart followed by Ignite or Ignite + Capreno (thiencarbazone + tembotrione) resulted in the greatest weed control. Corn yield was similar among all treatments which indicated the weed escapes were not large enough to cause yield loss.

The same corn variety was planted in each treatment. All PRE followed by POST treatments resulted in nearly complete weed contol. The one pass Roundup programs also resulted in nearly complete weed control whereas some of the one pass conventional or Liberty Link programs were less consistent. Adding Capreno (thiencarbazone + tembotrione) improved waterhemp control in the conventional and Liberty Link treatments. Corn yield was similar among all treatments which indicates that the weed escapes were not large enough to affect corn yield. 6

15 WARRANT CROP RESPONSE on CORN Southeast Research Farm The objective of this study was to evaluate corn tolerance to Warrant (acetochlor) applied POST at different times. Warrant is an encapsulated formulation of acetochlor (e.g. Harness) that can be applied in soybeans early POST. Corn injury was not observed and yield was similar among all treatments. Therefore, results from this study inidicated that Warrant may be applied in corn POST without causing injury. These results may be used to expand current labeled uses of Warrant. 8

17 ANTHEM in CORN Southeast Research Farm The objective of this study was to evaluate weed control from Anthem (fluthiacet + pyroxasulfone) in corn. Pyroxasulfone is a similar chemistry as metolachlor (Dual) or acetochlor (Harness). Fluthiacet is currently sold as Cadet. When applied PRE or POST with glyphosate, Anthem resulted in nearly complete control of velvetleaf, waterhemp, and smartweed. General weed desiccation was recorded shortly after the EPOST application to demonstrate differences in weed response time to the different herbicides. Adding Anthem with glyphosate greatly increased the response time relative to glyphosate alone. Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that Anthem may be an effective herbicide for added foliar and residual weed control in corn. 10

Realm is a new herbicide from DuPont. Abundit is glyphosate. Nearly all treatments resulted in complete weed control except Realm + Ignite resulted in several yellow foxtail escapes. This likely contributed to the corn yield loss that was observed from this treatment. Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that Realm may be effective in Roundup Ready corn but additional tank mixes may be needed in Liberty Link programs.

21 VERDICT & SHARPEN IN CORN Brookings Research Farm The objective of this study was to evaluate Sharpen (saflufenacil) and Verdict (saflufenacil + dimethenamid) in Roundup Ready corn. Harness Xtra (acetochlor + atrazine), Surestart (acetochlor + flumetsulam + clopyralid), and Atrazine 4L (1 qt) resulted in incomplete cocklebur control whereas the other PRE treatments resulted in good control. Nevertheless, the POST treatments controlled all the weed escapes and corn yield was not affected. It was interesting to note that the single glyphosate application resulted in incomplete weed control which reduced corn yield. Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that Verdict may be equally or more effective for weed control relative to other herbicides available. 14

All herbicide treatments resulted in nearly complete weed control. Some corn leaf disease, which may have been gray leaf spot, was noticed late in the season. The treatments that included Headline, a fungicide, seemed to reduce the visible disease appearance, particularly if applied at tassel, but it did not significantly increase corn yield. 15

Several other experimental 2,4-D formulations were also included in this study, but those results were not published. Results indicated that E-99, a 2,4-D ester from Winfield Solutions, was more effective than the LV 6 ester formulation but was equally effective as the amine formulation. These results were somewhat unexpected as it is typically believed that ester formulations are generally slightly more effective than amine formulations. However, ester forumulations are generally more volatile resulting in a greater risk of off-site movement. This study demonstrated that using an amine formulation does not necessarily mean that some weed control must be sacrificed. 16

Most treatments resulted in very good weed control. Corvus and Balance were more effective on green foxtail when applied PRE compared to POST. Surestart was less effective on wild buckwheat than treatments containing atrazine or Capreno when applied mid-post. The lack of foliar activity is somewhat unexpected, but consistent with other studies, since Surestart contains clopyralid (e.g. Stinger). Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that Balance, Corvus, or Capreno can be effective components of glyphosate-based herbicide programs.

27 ONE PASS CORN PROGRAMS Southeast Research Farm The objective of this study was to evaluate one pass weed control programs that include Balance (isoxaflutole), Corvus (isoxaflutole + thiencarbazone) or Capreno (tembotrione + thiencarbazone). The PRE or early-post treatments seemed to be more consistent than the mid-post treatments. The least velvetleaf control was observed in the Balance + atrazine PRE or Harness Xtra (acetochlor + atrazine) mid-post treatments. The most consistent mid-post included Capreno + atrazine + Roundup and Halex (metolachlor + mesotrione + glyphosate) + atrazine. Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that programs containing Balance, Corvus, or Capreno can be equally or more effective than other herbicide programs on the market. 20

Most herbicide programs controlled most weed species, except wild buckwheat. s with Harness Xtra (acetochlor + atrazine), Verdict (saflufenacil + dimethenamid), or Lumax (metolachlor + mesotrione + atrazine) resulted in the greater than 90% buckwheat control. If atrazine can not be used, it appears that Verdict would be more effective than Tripleflex (acetochlor + flumetsulam + clopyralid). Wild buckwheat control seemed to be similar among treatments at the end of the summer. Corn yield was similar among treatments indicating that the weed escapes were not large enough to affect yield. In summary, this study demonstrated that programs containing Corvus or Balance may be effective for many common weed species, there could be some wild buckwheat escapes that may appear in mid-summer.

Therefore, results from this study demonstrated that herbicide programs that include Corvus or Balance Flex may provide very good weed control, including good control of velvetleaf which is a difficult weed in glyphosate-based systems. 24

All treatments include N PAK AMS. Glyphosate (Durango) alone resulted in only moderate weed control which demonstrates the importance of PRE s or tank mix partners. The most effective program may have been Lumax (metolachlor + mesotrione + atrazine) PRE followed by Durango. Most treatments had either some grass or broadleaf weed escapes at some point in the season. Including Surestart in herbicide programs improved weed control relative to Durango alone, but other herbicides may have improved weed control on some weed species slightly more at different times in the growing season.

All the Fierce programs evaluated in this study resulted in nearly complete weed control with excellent crop safety.
