2 enzymes and their function No plant, animal, or human could exist without enzymes Researchers have identified more than 3,000 kinds of enzymes in the human body Enzyme marker tests are used by doctors via blood panels 2

3 what are Enzymes anyway. Enzymes are protein-based substance found in EVERY cell of EVERY living plant, animal and the human body. They either start chemical reactions or they make them run faster. They are natural catalysts that cause a chemical change WITHOUT themselves being affected. 3

4 found in toothpaste for more cleaning power makes leaves burst into beautiful colors ripens bananas and tomatoes etc cabbage fermented becomes sauerkraut 4

5 The Amino Acid connection Enzymes are composed of amino acids Amino acids are structural units of all protein Enzymes differ in the order and number of amino acids NINE of these amino acids cannot be made by the body and must be obtained through our diet 5

6 Naming the Enzyme Enzymes are named for the substance or substrate that they work on and break down. The suffix ase is then affixed to the end of the word. Example.enzyme that breaks down protein is called protease, fat- or lipid- digesting enzymes are called lipase and etc. 6

7 SIX classes of Enzymes CLASS FUNCTION Hydrolases proteases amylases lipases Break down the peptide bonds in proteins. Break down carbohydrates. Break down fats (lipids). Isomerases Break down the rearrangement of chemical groups within the same molecule. Ligases Catalyze the format of the bond between 2 substrate molecules through the use of an energy source. Lyases Split the double bonds between atoms with the accumulation or dissociation of chemical groups. Oxidoreductases Make oxidation and execution possible. Transferases Transfer chemical groups from one molecule to another. 7

9 how do enzymes work most work by helping take something (bonds) apart the 3-5% that synthesize instead of breaking apart are closed anabolic enzymes vs the cleaving catabolic enzymes they are very specialized- meaning substrate specific and the are FFAASSSST.. 9

10 all about the Co factors co factors or co enzymes must be present for the Enzymes to function (vitamins and minerals) and yet others inhibit or are competitors for enzyme function 10

11 signs of enzyme deficiency General symptoms of enzyme deficiency include bloating/gas, multiple food sensitivities, depression, fatigue Lipase deficiency: Fat malabsorption, greasy stool, dry skin and hair, high cholesterol, extreme discomfort with high-fat meals, muscle spasms Protease deficiency: Low blood sugar, chronic ear infections, meat fibers in stool, bacterial/viral infections Amylase deficiency: Allergies, cold hands and feet, depression, fatigue, mood swings, neck and shoulder aches, PMS, skin problems (rashes, hives, herpes, canker sores), hot flashes 11

18 STOMACH- the sack lining of stomach is loaded with glands supplying hormones, hydrochloric acid, and enzymes hydrochloric acid activates pepsin (inactive form is pepsinogen) and continues to break down food to chyme 18
