Risks of contracting Hepatitis B from a contaminated sharps injury range from 6% to 30% for workers susceptible to HBV infection 2. OSHA s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires employers to protect healthcare workers from exposure to HIV and hepatitis B and C. 10 VACUETTE Venous Blood Collection Tubes STANDARD TUBE COAGULATION TUBE Injection molded from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - producing highly transparent, virtually unbreakable blood collection tubes. Shelf life - 18 months from date of manufacture. Thick tube walls maintain the vacuum when subjected to variations in temperature. 11 Serum VACUETTE Serum Tubes are coated with micronized silica particles which activate clotting when tubes are gently inverted. They may be used for routine clinical chemistry, immunohematology, serology or immunology testing. VACUETTE Serum Tubes with Gel contain a barrier gel that is present in the bottom of the tube. During centrifugation, the barrier gel moves upward to the serum-clot interface where it forms a stable barrier, separating the serum from the cells. 12 Heparin The interior of the tube wall is coated with lithium heparin or sodium heparin. Heparin is an anticoagulant that binds antithrombins, effectively blocking the coagulation cascade producing a plasma sample. Heparin tubes are used for determinations in clinical chemistry and immunochemistry. VACUETTE Plasma Tubes with Lithium Heparin and Gel contain a barrier gel in the tube. During centrifugation, the gel barrier moves upward where it forms a stable barrier separating the plasma from cells. Plasma may be aspirated directly from the collection tube, which eliminates the need for transfer to another container. 14 Citrate VACUETTE Coagulation Tubes are filled with buffered tri-sodium citrate solution and are appropriate for routine hemostasis testing. Citrate concentrations of either 3.2% (0.109 mol/l) or 3.8% (0.129 mol/l) are available. The choice in the concentration depends upon the policies of the laboratory. The mixing ratio is 1 part citrate to 9 parts blood when the tube is filled appropriately as indicated by the fill mark on the label. 15 Molecular Diagnostics VACUETTE K 2 EDTA gel tubes are used for plasma preparation in molecular diagnostics for detection of viruses, parasites and bacteria. The tube interior is spray-dried with 1.8mg of anhydrous EDTA per 1mL of blood when the tube is appropriately filled. 16 MiniCollect Capillary Blood Collection System Open versus closed collection tubes Specimen collection devices for capillary blood are either open systems or closed systems. With open systems, specimens are more likely to splatter when mixed during collection, exposing the collector to potentially infectious bloodborne pathogens. In addition, when open system tubes are accidentally dropped, the contents are likely to spill from the tube, requiring re-collection and biohazard spill clean up. MiniCollect Capillary Blood Collection Tubes offer caps with flexible rubber cross-cuts that accommodate either a funnel or coated plastic capillary collection device to collect the specimen without removing the cap. Upon removal of the funnel or capillary, the cap closes to prevent loss of specimen. The following MiniCollect features help reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens and increase the likelihood of successful specimen collection. Because the tops of MiniCollect tubes are closed, the specimen can be mixed during collection without concern of splatter, loss of specimen or bloodborne pathogen exposure. 17 MiniCollect Capillary Blood Collection System MiniCollect Serum and Heparin Plasma Tubes are used for testing in clinical chemistry. There is also a MiniCollect Serum tube available with no additive. MiniCollect Serum and Plasma Tubes with Gel contain an inert, acrylic barrier in the bottom of the tube. During centrifugation, the gel moves upward to form a stable barrier between the clot/cells and the serum/plasma. The barrier is also stable during transportation. 20 VACUETTE Urine Collection System Overview of Tube Types and Areas of Application VACUETTE Urine Tubes no additive, round base These tubes are used as collection containers and/or transport containers for: Chemical urinalysis Urine test strips It is recommended that specimens are analyzed shortly after collection. The stability during the preanalytical phase is determined by the temperature, the mechanical load and time. Samples may remain stable longer when cooled this is specified by the instrument manufacturer. Generally, when urine is cooled to 4 C directly after collection and the specimen reaches the laboratory on the same day, the tubes may be used for microbiological studies. VACUETTE Urine Tubes no additive, conical base These tubes are used as collection containers and/or transport containers for: Microscopic examination of urine sediment. The time from collection to analysis of urine sediment should not be longer than two hours. The recommended specimen for microscopic examinations is mid-stream urine. VACUETTE Urine Tubes with preservative (boric acid), round base Boric acid stabilizes microorganisms (inhibits bacterial growth) in urine for up to 24 hours. These tubes are used as collection containers and/ or transport containers for: Specimens tested for an otherwise unstable analyte this is specified by the instrument manufacturer.
