BC15 Removal of phenol catalyzed by peroxidase from water hyacinth Watcharapong Wongkaew, Pariyakorn Kanchanawat, Piyamon Songpanich & Nuchutha Thamsumet Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to W.W. Municipal and industrial wastewater is often contaminated with phenol, an organic compound found in household products and used in many manufacturing processes. Due to phenol toxicity, it needs to be eliminated from water. In this study, crudely extracted peroxidase from water hyacinth, another water pollution in Thailand, was utilized as a catalyst in phenol removal by polymerization and precipitation. Peroxidases from stolons, roots and leaves of water hyacinth were crudely extracted and tested for enzyme activity according to the standard protocol and it was found that the enzyme from roots provided the highest activity. The peroxidase from roots was then used in phenol removal from the synthetic phenolcontaminated water containing 1.0 mm phenol at ph 7.4 and 24 C for 30 minutes. The remaining phenol concentration was analyzed by the total phenol assay in which phenol reacts with 4aminoantipyrine (4AAP) in the presence of potassium ferricyanide reagent to form quinoneimine dye detected by UVVis spectrophotometer at 510 nm. By using this condition, the phenol removal efficiency was around 50%. The optimum condition for higher efficiency of phenol removal using peroxidase from water hyacinth will be further studied. Keywords: Water hyacinth, Peroxidase, Phenol

BC14 The effect of aromatherapy from plants for protecting from House flies Sutthichart Angkasuwan, Krittalak Khongman & Wallop Kongna Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to S.A. Houseflies (Musca domestica) can be an important nuisance by disturbing human and animals. They can spread diseases by feeding on human food. The objective of this work is to study the effect of aromatherapy oil, extracted from herbs, for protecting the houseflies. The aromatherapy oils which are basil, citronella, orange peel, lavender and a mixture of oils were used for determining the prevention of food from contact with 50 Adult houseflies. The results show that basil oil was the best for protecting the food with 82.33%, followed by citronella oil which prevents the food from houseflies. The present study suggests that the basil oil can be considered as new aromatherapy oil for preventing the food from contact with flies. Keywords: Flies, Aromatherapy

BC01 The study of antibacterial efficiency on egg white and eggshell membrane and the application of egg white and eggshell membrane as a material for medical uses Rujeerada Wirojjananuwat, Praon Thareeboonchai & Sataporn Wantanawijarn Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to R.W. (rujeerada.44@hotmail.com). Large amount of egg white and eggshell membrane is left from food industries. Egg white has an ability to inhibit growth of microorganism and provide important growth factors. Eggshell membrane can be a wound healing material and filtrate out bacteria. From these properties, the purpose of research was to study the antibacterial efficiency of egg white and eggshell membrane, and apply them to be a material for medical uses. To investigate the antibacterial efficiency, air dried egg white and sterilized eggshell membrane were plated on oral microbes and S. aureus for 48 hrs. The egg white showed the positive effect on inhibition of some oral microbe and S. Aureus, but the membrane presented no effect on both. The egg white was mixed to gelatin solution to form gelatin sheet to study the efficiency of medical material in term of absorption and inhibition. The results illustrated that minimum concentration making sheet still solid at 38.5 C was 15%w/w gelatin solution. After testing material, raw egg white gelatin sheet showed the best result of inhibition zone on oral microbes and S. aureus than dried egg white gelatin sheet. The absorption ability was detected from both sheets. To create more stable sheets, glucose was added to make crosslinked with gelatin by UV light into raw and dried egg white sheets. However, these exposed sheets presented the less antibacterial ability which may due to degradation of egg white protein by UV light. Keywords: Egg white, Eggshell membrane, Antibacterial efficiency, Medical material

BC08 Prolonging storage life of rice vermicelli using Caesalpinia sappan, Terminalia chebula and Cinnamomum spp. extracts Panyawat Paibulkitkul 1, Thunthup Kiratisehwe 1, Pootai Tabmanee 1, Pornrat Sinchaipanit 2 & Aree Sakyim 1 1 Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. 2 Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University at Salaya, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to P.P. (ruth_ziiz1112@hotmail.com). Because rice vermicelli is classified as a perishable food, we consider a choice of natural extracts to be used to extend the shelf life of food instead of preservative chemicals which are harmful to human. The objective of this project is to study the effect of extracts from Caesalpinia sappan, Terminalia chebula and Cinnamomum spp. on shelf life storage of rice vermicelli. The experiment was done by extraction with ethanol from Caesalpinia sappan, Terminalia chebula and Cinnamomum spp., and mixed with rice vermicelli. The sensory test found that rice vermicelli with Cinnamomum spp. extract had the highest average preference scores. Microbiological test resulted from aerobic plate count and total fungi count for 5 days showed that rice vermicelli with Cinnamomum spp. extract at concentrations of 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/ml could inhibit the growth of bacteria and the result was significantly different from the control group (P < 0.05), but rice vermicelli with Cinnamomum spp. extract at concentrations of 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/ml could not inhibit the growth of fungi. We conclude that Cinnamomum spp. extract with ethanol at concentrations of 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/ml are effective in prolonging storage life of rice vermicelli which is similar to rice vermicelli mixed with preservative. Keywords: Rice vermicelli, Cinnamomum spp., Shelf life extension

BC09 The effect of maturity stages and drying methods on antioxidant properties and total phenolic contents in Indian marsh fleabane (Pluchea indica (L.) Less.) leaves Tayanee Sripiboon 1, Chanidapa Limwanitkul 1, Piyapat Jatuphonjaradkul 1, Bualuang Faiyue 1, Nattira Onnom 2 & Uthaiwan Suttisansanee 2 1 Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Salaya, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. 2 Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU), Salaya, Phutthamonthon, Nakhon Pathom 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to T.S. (faiisripiboon@gmail.com) Indian marsh fleabane (Pluchea indica (L.) Less.) or Khlu in Thai is the local shrub found in Thailand and many Asian countries. The objectives of this research were to compare antioxidant properties and total phenolic contents (TPCs) of Khlu leaves under different maturity stages and methods of leaves drying in order to prepare appropriate Khlu tea. Then, the infusion time was optimized to receive Khlu tea with high antioxidant properties and TPCs. Antioxidant properties were evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging and FRAP assays, while TPCs were measured using FolinCiocateu reagent. The results suggested that leaves collected at 10 cm from the tip of Khlu branch exhibited the highest antioxidant activities and TPCs. Besides, freeze dry leaves exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activities and TPCs than dry leaves under hot air oven. The appropriate infusion time of Khlu tea was approximately 1020 minutes, which yielded the highest antioxidant activities and TPCS. Keywords: Antioxidant, Thai weed plant, Indian marsh fleabane

BC10 The effect of tannic acid on tissue culture and antioxidant property of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Karn Wunsin, Ratchanon Puengrang, Chan Tantikosol & Pimphen Klinlaong Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to K.W. The plumule of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) embryo contains antioxidant activity and was widely used in traditional medicine to cure diseases. According to difficult propagation, plant tissue culture technique is introduced to reproduce the lotus by using 6 media: MS (control), MS mg/l 2,4D, MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid, MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid, MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid, and MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid to induce antioxidant reactant. After 2 weeks, embryo was collected and analyzed for dry weight, wet weight, length, percent of surviving and antioxidant activity. The result indicates that a culture medium of MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid had the best result in term of the percentage of surviving, dry weight and fresh weight, whereas a medium with MS mg/l 2,4D g/l tannic acid produced the best result in the length. The antioxidant activity by DPPH assay is under investigation. Keywords: Antioxidant, Tissue culture, Lotus

BC12 Holding solution in prolonging vase life of cut Dendrobium White 5N orchids from crude extract of Moringa oleifera Lam. seeds Samita Sivavut 1, Panupong Anutaungkoon 1, Anchaya Mongkolchaiyaphruek 2 & Tipanart Noikaew 1 1 Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand. 2 Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, 10900, Thailand. Correspondence should be addressed to S.S. (firn.samita@gmail.com). Dendrobium White 5N orchids are commercial requirements, so they are exported in numerous amount. In the transferring process, orchids will produce more ethylene than usual which makes the orchid s vase life shorter. This project has purpose to study effect of holding solution from crude extract of Moringa oleifera Lam. seeds on vase life of cut Dendrobium White 5N orchids. Cut orchids were treated with g/l, g/l, g/l crude extract of M. oleifera seeds and 10 ppm silver nitrate in the holding solution containing 200 ppm hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) and 2% (w/v) glucose. The result showed that crude extract of M. oleifera seeds could prolong the vase life of orchids. By statistically significant 95%, holding solution from crude extract of M. leifera seeds could prolong 20% more vase life than distilled water (negative control) and had equivalent efficient as holding solution from 10 ppm silver nitrate because crude extract of M. oleifera seeds may contain Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), an ethylene inhibitor.
