In this study, 67 people with type 2 diabetes and neuropathy took a placebo or one of two sets of supplements. The first group took 20 mg zinc, 250 mg magnesium, 200 mg vitamin C, and 150 IU vitamin E per day. The second group took the same supplements plus 10 mg each of vitamins B1, B2, and B6, 200 mcg biotin, 10 mcg vitamin B12, and 1 mg folic acid. After four months, the two supplement groups reported less-severe symptoms than placebo. Although doctors said the difference between placebo and supplement groups was small, they concluded that micronutrients may help relieve diabetic neuropathy. Resveratrol improved insulin sensitivity Many doctors believe that oxidative stress* is a factor in insulin resistance, which makes the body less able to absorb and use sugar (glucose) circulating in the blood. In this study, 19 men with type 2 diabetes took a placebo or 5 mg of resveratrol, the antioxidant polyphenol, twice per day. Researchers asked the men not to eat foods with high amounts of resveratrol, such as red wine and grapes, peanuts, and berries. After four weeks, while the placebo group had not improved, men who had taken resveratrol had far fewer signs of oxidative stress, and much higher levels of a protein that helps cells absorb and use glucose. Doctors said this is the first study in humans to show that resveratrol improves insulin sensitivity. *What is oxidative stress? Oxidative stress is a factor in many disorders and occurs when unstable oxygen-containing molecules outnumber antioxidants in the body, causing a toxic imbalance that damages the fats, proteins, and DNA within cells. Reference: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice; 2011, Electronic Prepublication september s Healthy Insight Zinc Reduces the Common Cold Researchers in this review analyzed 15 zinc studies that included 1,360 participants of all ages. People who took zinc syrup, lozenges, or tablets within one day of feeling cold symptoms reported less-severe symptoms and shorter illness than placebo. In two related prevention studies, researchers followed 394 children taking a zinc supplement and found that zinc reduced the number of colds, the number of days absent from school, and the need for prescription antibiotics in those who took zinc for at least five months. Doctors call for more study to find the best dose and form of zinc to take for colds. 3 Healthy Eyes Nutrients reduced chances of AMD and symptoms of dry eye More vitamin D, less AMD in women AMD, or age-related macular degeneration, is the loss of sight in the center of the field of vision and is the most common form of vision loss in aging. Doctors said that one of the factors leading to AMD is inflammation and that prior research suggests vitamin D may help prevent diseases caused by inflammation. In this study, researchers measured blood serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D which reflects both vitamin D levels from the sun and from food in 1,313 postmenopausal women. Although higher vitamin D levels did not reduce chances of AMD for women aged 75 and older, for women under age 75, those who consumed the most vitamin D were 59 percent less likely to develop early AMD as were women who consumed the least. Omega-3s relieve dry eye The healthy eye has a thin film that coats, protects, cleans, and moistens the eye and consists of three layers; inner mucus, middle saltwater, and outer oil. In dry eye, there are too few tears in the saltwater layer, causing discomfort and blurred vision. In this study, 36 people with dry eye took 450 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid, 300 mg of docosahexaenoic acid, and 1,000 mg of flaxseed oil per day, or a placebo. After 90 days, 70 percent of those in the omega-3 group had no symptoms compared to 7 percent for placebo. Also compared to placebo, the omega-3 group had greater tear flow and volume. Reference: Archives of Ophthalmology; 2011, Vol. 29, No. 4, Cancer Update Nutrients reduce chances of several cancers Lignans reduce breast cancer Doctors believe that lignans plantbased antioxidants that block the action of estrogen in the body may protect against breast cancer. To find out, researchers analyzed the diets of women who had participated in 21 different studies and found that postmenopausal women who consumed the most lignans were 14 percent less likely to develop breast cancer compared to those who got the least. Foods that contain lignans include flax and sesame seeds, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. More vitamin D, less colon cancer Researchers in this review analyzed 35 studies that measured vitamin D levels and the chances for cancer. For every 10 nanograms per milliliter increase in blood levels of vitamin D, chances for colorectal cancer decreased by 15 percent. Researchers suggest new studies to see if raising the level of vitamin D will lower chances for colorectal cancer further. Preserving the anti-cancer effects of vitamin D Doctors said that vitamin D has anti-tumor effects, but an enzyme in those with aggressive forms of lung cancer destroys vitamin D. In the study, researchers compared lung-cancer and healthy tissue from 86 participants and found far greater levels of the destructive enzyme in the cancer tissue. Five years later, those with the highest enzyme levels were half as likely to have survived compared to those with the lowest enzyme levels. Doctors are hoping to find a way to block the destructive enzyme and combine this treatment with vitamin D, to optimize and preserve the anti-cancer effects of vitamin D. 5 Healthy Women Nutrients protect against bladder infection, improve immunity and circulation Alpha-lipoic acid improved circulation in early hypothyroidism Early, or subclinical, hypothyroidism (SH) is an imbalance in thyroid hormones that causes low energy and fatigue. Doctors said that earlier studies linked SH to less-flexible blood vessels and elevated blood pressure. Because oxidative stress may be a factor in SH, researchers wanted to see if the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid might help. In the study, 40 women recently diagnosed with SH took alpha-lipoic acid or a placebo daily for three weeks. While there were no changes for placebo, those in the alpha-lipoic acid group had much lower levels of oxidative stress and greater blood-vessel flexibility compared to placebo and compared to the beginning of the study. Researchers also found a direct link: as levels of oxidative stress decreased, blood-vessel flexibility increased. Vitamin D fights E. coli Postmenopausal women are more likely to have urinary tract infection and low levels of vitamin D. To test the effect of vitamin D on immune activity, researchers took healthy bladder tissue samples from eight postmenopausal women before and after the women took 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day for 12 weeks. By the end of the study, vitamin D levels had increased 45 percent and, when researchers exposed bladder cells to E. coli bacteria, immune activity tripled. Researchers concluded vitamin D prepares bladder tissue to fight E. coli infection by increasing the antimicrobial immune response. Reference: Public Library of Science; 2010, Vol. 5, No. 12, e15580 september s Nutrient Focus Vitamins A and E: More Important Than You Think Vitamin A helps produce cellular energy, and healthy 100-year-olds have higher levels of vitamins A and E than most centenarians Cell energy In a lab, scientists separately grew human and mouse cells with and without vitamin A (retinol). Without vitamin A, cell metabolism slowed, producing fewer of the molecules essential for transporting energy within each cell. As soon as vitamin A levels were restored, normal energy production resumed. Researchers believe these findings help explain why vitamin A deficiency causes so many diseases. Reference: Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology; 2010, Vol. 24, No. 2, Healthy 100-year-olds In a review of longevity studies, researchers found that healthy centenarians (100-year-olds) consistently have higher vitamin A levels than their less-healthy peers; levels similar to those in healthy young adults. In several of the studies, the healthiest centenarians had normal vitamin A and vitamin E levels, which researchers believe protected against oxidative stress, contributing to their extreme longevity. 6 Vitamins continue to be No. 1 at Burman s BROOKHAVEN It started with a question more than a decade ago. Marty Burman of Burman s Health Foods in the Meadowbrook Shopping Center had studied business at York College and wanted to determine a career path. I didn t know what I wanted to do, the 42-year-old said. So, he turned to his dad, Harvey, who owned Burman s Pharmacy in Chester. What do you think if I opened a vitamin store in Brookhaven? he said. In addition to his approval, Harvey Burman told him, You ll learn from your customers. Even today, Marty Burman said the endorsement remains. I truly believe that he feels that this is the way we should take medicine, he said. Two months later, GNC opened in the Brookhaven Shopping Center across the street. I guess I had the right idea, Burman said. Over the years, his store sold natural foods and organic produce. But Burman focuses on vitamin supplements. It started to get so mainstream, he said of the holistic food demand, people went to the mass market. So he concentrated on the vitamins and even visits various groups, like Boeing, to share his Health and Life Benefits of Supplements presentation. The big thing is, these supplements are very safe without side effects, Burman said. Part of his presentation includes his top five recommendations. At the top is a multivitamin. He and his dad developed a liquid multivitamin that Burman said is popular. We have all these unique and cool ways of delivering vitamins into your system, he said. Then, he suggests a chewable vitamin D, which is assisted in the chewing process by the enzyme breakdown. He also recommends fish oil/omega 3 fatty acids, probiotics and a coenzyme or Q10. A customer in the store Friday, Yasmeen Faruq, was looking for some treatments for her 7-year-old daughter, Sun, whose eye was bothering her. Faruq said she s been giving her three children, ranging in age from 7 to 12, homeopathic medicine since they were born. Never had a problem, she said. She explained why she prefers them. It s natural, Faruq said. A lot of the drugs, that s basically what they are drugs. And I don t want to harm my body with drugs. For his graying clientele, Burman offers free delivery to White Horse Village, Riddle Village, Maris Grove and other senior communities. Burman said he understands there s a time and a place for medicine. We definitely need medicine, he said. However, Burman said he thinks the reliance on pharmaceuticals is too heavy. I believe that we are overmedicated, completely overmedicated, Burman said. I m not a chemist, but that can t be good for you. In this study, 176 women over age 40 took about 750 mg of plant-sourced calcium along with 800 IU, 1,000 IU, or 1,600 IU of vitamin D per day, as part of three separate plans. Some of the women measured how far they walked each day, and read health information. Researchers compared the three groups to two other groups of women; one that took no calcium or bone supplement, and another that took non-plant-source calcium. After six months, the no-calcium and non-plant-source calcium groups had lost BMD, as doctors had expected. Women in all three plant-sourced calcium groups, particularly those who took calcium and vitamin D most consistently, saw BMD increase at the rate of up to 2 percent per year.
