Researchers reviewing recent findings said that omega-3 fish oil improves these storage and release functions while reducing adipose tissue-specific inflammation, all central factors in metabolic syndrome. Omega-3 appears to raise blood levels of two key hormones secreted by adipose tissue: adiponectin, which regulates fat and sugar metabolism and reduces blood vessel inflammation; and leptin, which signals the brain when the body has had enough to eat. More vitamin D, less metabolic syndrome In this study, researchers measured blood levels of vitamin D in 3,262 Chinese men and women from Beijing and Shanghai, aged 50 to 70, and found that 24 percent were low and 69 percent were deficient in vitamin D. Among those low or deficient, 42 percent had metabolic syndrome. Chances for insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome increased as vitamin D levels fell, especially in those who were overweight or obese. Doctors said the findings were consistent with other studies in Western populations. Carotenoids Researchers in this study measured carotenoids in the diets of 374 men aged 40 to 80, 22 percent of whom had metabolic syndrome. Compared to men who consumed the least, men who got the most lycopene were 45 percent less likely to have metabolic syndrome; and for all carotenoids, were 58 percent less likely. Men who got the most carotenoids also had smaller waist size, less stored fat, and lower triglyceride levels. Beta-carotene and lycopene appeared to be the most beneficial. Carotenoids are the bright red and orange pigments found in fruits and vegetables. Reference: Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry; 2011, Vol. 22, No. 2, june s Healthy Insight Melatonin Improves Sleep When healthy people chronically can t sleep, they have primary insomnia (PI); sleeplessness not due to outside factors such as alcohol, drugs, disease or stress. In this study, 746 adults with PI, aged 18 to 80, took timed-release melatonin, or a placebo, two hours before bedtime. While the placebo group did not improve at any time, after three weeks, those 55 or older who took melatonin fell asleep more quickly, and over the next six months, the entire melatonin group slept better. After treatment, there were no withdrawal or tolerance symptoms, and no rebound insomnia. Researchers said melatonin is effective for PI in the short- and longterm. 2 Our Bones: Critical for Structure and Function Our bones play a critical role in human activity and health. We are able to stand, walk and jump among other activities because of our bones and the strong skeletal structure they form. Without our bones we wouldn t be able to walk on land, as we would collapse under our own weight. Most visual cues for bone dinosaur fossils or skeletons in biology classrooms evoke a lifeless, permanent structure. It s even easy to believe that once we reach adulthood, our bones stop growing and we keep the same skeleton for the rest of our lives. Bone Remodeling: A Lifelong Process The truth is, human bones are active living tissues that, like our cells, are constantly being created and then broken down to maintain optimal health and function. This process of breaking down old bone and building new bone is called bone remodeling and it begins at birth and continues throughout our entire lives. In fact, we remodel our entire skeleton every seven years that s a complete new set of bones in just a few short years. This constant remodeling of our bones should give us confidence in our bone health we probably wouldn t want to live in the same house our entire life without remodeling, why would we want the structure of our bodies to remain stagnant? A key to optimal bone health is balance. Specifically, we can maintain our bone strength if we build new bone as quickly as we remove old bone. As we age, however, our body struggles to maintain this balance and bone strength can be affected. 4 Women s Health - I Women benefit from the right fatty acids EFAs ease PMS Essential fatty acids (EFAs), which must come from the diet, help maintain the reproductive system and may ease breast tenderness, bloating and depression in PMS, according to researchers. In this study, 120 women with PMS took one or two doses of an EFA supplement, or a placebo, beginning on the 15th day of the menstrual cycle (near ovulation) and continued for 15 days. The supplement contained 210 mg gamma linolenic acid, 345 mg linoleic acid, 175 mg oleic acid, 250 mg other polyunsaturated fatty acids, and 20 mg of vitamin E. After three cycles, PMS symptoms had improved for placebo and EFA groups compared to the start of the study. By six months, while there was no further improvement for placebo, symptoms for EFAs continued to improve, particularly in the two-dose group. DHA promotes healthy blood clotting in women Platelets are cells that help the blood clot normally and begin the woundhealing process. Too little platelet activity leads to excess bleeding, but too much can impair healing, block blood flow, and lead to heart attack or stroke. Researchers said earlier lab studies suggested docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help normalize platelet activity in women more than men. In this study, 15 women took eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), DHA, or a placebo. Doctors measured platelet activity before and several times during the next 24 hours. While EPA was not effective, DHA reduced platelet activity 14 percent after 24 hours. Study authors concluded DHA effectively interacts with female sex hormones to normalize platelet activity, reducing chances of heart attack and stroke. Reference: Reproductive Health; 2011, Vol. 8, No. 1, 2 Women s Health - II Everyday nutrients improve chances of cancer-free living Vitamin D protects against breast cancer Researchers in this study interviewed 200 women with breast cancer and 200 healthy women to measure total vitamin D from diet, supplements, and sunlight. Scientists considered differences in age, education, motherhood, hormone replacement therapy, body mass index, daily calories, menopause status, and exposure to sunlight. Overall, for women of every age and health status, those who got more than 400 IU of vitamin D per day were half as likely to develop breast cancer as women who got less than 80 IU per day. Chances of breast cancer increase with age and weight, and younger women are less likely to develop the disease, yet vitamin D even showed a protective effect in younger, premenopausal women of healthy weight. Folate lowered chances of pancreatic cancer Researchers said several prior studies had shown a link between higher folate levels and lower chances of pancreatic cancer. Folate is the form that folic acid takes inside the body. In this study, doctors measured the diets of 57,187 women, aged 55 to 74, who were free of pancreatic cancer at the start of the study. Over 6.5 years of follow-up, women who consumed more than 253 mcg of folic acid per day were half as likely to develop pancreatic cancer as women who got less than 179 mcg per day. Scientists believe that cancer chances increase when DNA malfunctions and that folate plays a key role in keeping DNA healthy. 6 Healthy Men Nutrients lower chances for heart trouble and improve cholesterol Flaxseed lowered cholesterol, improved liver health In this study, 30 men with moderately high cholesterol, 180 to 240 mg/dl, took 20 mg of flaxseed lignan capsules per day, 100 mg per day, or a placebo. After 12 weeks, those who had taken 100 mg of flaxseed had a much lower ratio of LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol, both compared to the start of the study and compared to placebo. High triglyceride levels and obesity can also cause elevated liver enzymes. Researchers found that the 100 mg flaxseed group had lower blood levels of two liver enzymes a sign that inflammation and cell damage in the liver had decreased compared to the start of the study and to placebo. Reference: Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Disease; 2010, Electronic Prepublication Healthy Kids Nutrients reduce asthma and fatty liver disease Vitamin D eases asthma Children with asthma are often deficient in vitamin D and more likely to suffer asthma attacks which are typically triggered by respiratory tract infections. Researchers said that vitamin D stimulates the immune system to produce peptides, which help protect against bacteria and viruses. In the study, doctors measured vitamin D blood levels in 1,024 children with mild to moderate persistent asthma and found 35 percent had low vitamin D; less than 30 nanograms per milliliter of blood. Children then took an asthma steroid inhalant, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory inhalant, or a placebo. Doctors wanted to see which children would need additional medical attention and found those with good vitamin D levels were 33 percent less likely to need a hospital visit for asthma. DHA improves fatty liver disease Children who are overweight or obese especially around the waist are more likely to have fatty liver disease, as are kids with diabetes, insulin resistance, or high blood fats. In the early stages of fatty liver, fat accumulates in liver cells. In later stages, scar tissue can form, impairing the liver. In this study, 60 kids whose biopsies revealed a fatty liver took 250 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day, 500 mg of DHA per day, or a placebo. After six months, doctors used ultrasound to measure liver-fat content. Compared to placebo, those who had taken either dose of DHA had less severe fat buildup in liver cells, greater insulin sensitivity, and lower total blood fat levels. Doctors said prior studies had found DHA has anti-inflammatory and insulin-sensitizing effects and believe DHA stimulates the genes that control insulin sensitivity and blood sugar metabolism.
