5 Healthy Start Vitamins

6 What is Healthy Start? Healthy Start replaced the Welfare Food Scheme in Autumn 2006, the scheme: Includes fruit and vegetables As well as milk and infant formula milk Supports breastfeeding Promotes uptake of vitamin supplements Encourages earlier and closer contact between health professionals and families from disadvantaged groups

7 Who qualifies for Healthy Start? Healthy Start is open to pregnant women and families with children under the age of four who are on: Income Support income-based Jobseeker's Allowance or Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit unless their family is receiving Working Tax Credit run-on only*) with an income of 16,190 a year or less (2011/12) All pregnant women under the age of 18 also qualify, whether or not they are on benefits.

8 Why are vitamin supplements important? Families in lower income groups have less vitamin C in their diet [immune system, absorption iron, muscle, bone] 1 in 2 children under 5 yrs don t have enough vitamin A in their diet [immune system, growth & development, vision] National surveys show people have low plasma vitamin D levels, such as young children, Asian children, women of child bearing age and teenage girls [bone, low Vit D rickets] Studies have shown folic acid supplement before conception and during first 3 months pregnancy, can reduce neural tube defects in babies

9 Recommendations for infants and children A daily dose of vitamins A, C and D for: breastfed infants from 6 months (or from 1 month if there is any doubt about the mother's vitamin status during pregnancy) formula-fed infants who are over 6 months and taking less than 500 ml infant formula per day children under 5 years of age

10 Recommendations for women Daily: 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day for pregnant and breastfeeding women 400 micrograms of folic acid for women who may become pregnant and up until the 12th week of pregnancy.

17 Action Plan: awareness and non beneficiaries Raise awareness to professionals and public Will be developing a communication strategy 2013, include: existing forums, groups, professional development Develop system for non beneficiaries to purchase vitamins [2011] Will be identifying suitable outlet to sell to non beneficiaries

18 Summary Vitamin supplements recommended for infants and pregnant & breast feeding women GYW has very poor uptake of vitamins GYW implementing action plan to increase uptake of vitamins Staff working with families to promote registration with scheme & vitamin uptake.
