7 GRAZE DUP A high protein and energy feed block with minerals for ewes and lambs. Formulated to support health and performance on spring grass. BEEF PRODUCERS CAN SAVE ON BEDDING COSTS Rumevite feed blocks will cost approximately 10.92/head of cattle for a six week autumn grazing period. By not housing your cattle, you will be saving on the cost of the bedding straw and the associated work. By feeding silage outside in ring feeders and supplementing the grazing with Rumevite High Energy and Protein blocks, will reduce costs by saving approximately 3.00 to 4.00 per animal over a six week period*. *Basis on straw cost of 30p/day/head David Thornton, Rumenco Technical Manager. 10 MAXX MAXX licks are a range of dairy, beef and sheep low moisture licks from Rumenco, that offer livestock producers a highly-palatable, hardened product designed to supplement grazing or foragebased rations. The manufacturing process dehydrates the molasses very rapidly. This results in less destruction of the sugar, so that more digestible energy is available to stock. This results in hard licks that better perform and give excellent control of free-access intakes. MAXX licks contain a blend of cane molasses, vegetable oil, proteins, minerals and vitamins, that can be offered with ad-lib forage or grazing, outdoors or indoors, providing additional nutrition for cattle, sheep and lambs. Available in 22.5kg and 80kg tubs. MAXX CATTLE BOOSTER AVAILABLE WITH MAXX ENERGY Offer MAXX ENERGY licks to breeding sheep to help manage body condition and to flush ewes before tupping. Introduce MAXX ENERGY 2 weeks pre-tupping for 8 weeks. Re-introduce licks in mid to late pregnancy to enhance forage value, particularly where grazing conditions are poor. MAXX ORIGINAL Offer MAXX ORIGINAL licks to sheep, beef cattle and dairy young stock at pasture or indoors to support performance. Suitable for supplementing all types of forage and can be safely fed in mixed grazing situations with sheep. MAXX CATTLE MAG Offer MAXX CATTLE MAG licks to dairy and suckler cows at risk from staggers pre-turnout for 6 weeks in spring and again in the autumn to supply extra magnesium. For the rest of the grazing season and during housing, offer MAXX ORIGINAL. DO NOT FEED TO SHEEP. MAXX CATTLE BOOSTER Offer MAXX CATTLE BOOSTER to dairy and beef cattle on high forage rations and at grass. It can be fed to all types of cattle and supports higher performance as a result of increased intakes and digestibility of forage rations. DO NOT FEED TO SHEEP. 10 VISIT FOR MORE INFO

16 STAGGERS RISK CAN BE AVOIDED David Thornton, Rumenco s technical manager explains that grass staggers is a very real threat for suckler and dairy cows at turnout, but can be easily mitigated by assessing and managing the on-farm risks. Magnesium is not easily mobilised from stores in the body such as bone, so cattle rely on their nutrition to maintain adequate blood magnesium levels. Providing a diet containing long fibre sources, such as hay or silage, can slow the quick transition through the rumen that often happens with spring grass. It s also vital to ensure stock have access to a magnesium supplement to alleviate the low magnesium levels also common in spring pastures, he says. Supplementing cattle with a magnesium supplement can help ensure blood magnesium levels remain at 2 to 3mg per 100ml of blood. 16 VISIT FOR MORE INFO

23 SUPPLEMENT FOR AN EASIER LAMBING Ensuring dietary intakes match ewe nutritional requirements is a priority in the final trimester to give every chance of a successful lambing. Mrs Stokeld runs the largest flock of Border Leicester s in England at her farm in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, with 100 breeding ewes. I ve been using LIFELINE Lamb and Ewe for the past two years in the run-up to lambing as part of our feeding programme. Since using LIFELINE I ve noticed that ewes are quick to lamb and there are generally very few incidences where I ve had to intervene. Last year we had more triplets than usual, but the ewes were able to rear all three with little problem because the quality of the colostrum in the first instance was good and they had the milk available going forwards, says Mrs Stokeld. LIFELINE Lamb and Ewe provides 13 MJ of ME per kg DM, helping ensure ewes receive a balanced diet to help maintain condition during this crucial time. NEED HELP OR ADVICE? CALL

27 BALANCING DIETS BENEFITS COLOSTRUM QUALITY David Thornton, Rumenco technical manager, explains the importance of matching diets with the changing nutritional demands in the final period prior to calving. Ensuring cows and heifers are in the best condition means they have the capacity to produce a quality source of colostrum. On-farm trials have proven that feeding LIFELINE Pre-Calver Mineral Crumb in the pre-calving ration can increase IgG 1 colostrum concentration by up to 42%. Mr Craig, on whose farm the LIFELINE Pre-Calver trial was carried out on said that as well as the scientific observations he also noticed, cows fed with the LIFELINE Pre-Calver Mineral Crumb had more birthing fluid. It was one of the easiest calving periods I ve ever had, he says. IgG makes up 75 to 80% of the total immunoglobulins and is particularly important for passive immunity, passed onto the offspring via the placenta and in the colostrum. NEED HELP OR ADVICE? CALL

36 MYCOTOXINS WHAT ARE MYCOTOXINS? Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by fungi (moulds) which grow on animal feeds, including pasture, forages, cereal grain, by-products and straw. Hundreds of mycotoxins have been identified and one mould species can produce many different types. NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MYCOTOXINS IN RUMINANTS Chronic exposure: May be expressed as just minor increases in common cow problems, especially with freshly calved cows. Acute exposure: Symptoms including abrupt drops in milk production and feed intake, abortions, lameness and in the most severe cases, mortality. DIAGNOSIS OF MYCOTOXIN ISSUES Poor response to veterinary therapy is frequently an indicator of mycotoxins Feed can be tested for mycotoxins COMMON SYMPTOMS IN RUMINANTS Calves/heifers Reduced feed intake Reduced weight gain Non homogenous growth Higher mortality Diarrhoea Gastroenteritis Enlarged and reddened teats in heifers Poor response to vaccination Lesions on the muzzle, lips, tongue and pharynx Dairy cattle/beef cattle Decreased feed intake, increased feed refusal, anorexia Reduced weight gain, weight loss Decreased milk production Depressed butterfat levels in milk Increased mastitis Diarrhoea Gastroenteritis Higher incidence of ketosis (fatty liver), retained placenta, metritis, fertility disorders, displaced abomasum Lameness, hoof necrosis Increased body temperature/heat stress Staggering gait 36 VISIT FOR MORE INFO
