3 Ways to Classify Sports Injuries (Slides 4 and 5) Activity 2: Identifying injury classification Activity 3: Matching Activity Match the correct information in columns 1 and 2 and then provide a specific example for each injury classification. Classification Definition Example Direct Occurring to any tissues of the body other than bone Indirect External force or blow to the body Overuse Occurring to bones and teeth Soft tissue When excessive or repetitive force is placed on the bones or other tissues of the body Hard tissue Caused by intrinsic force applied to the body PDHPE Enrichment Day 2017 Sports Medicine Page 59

9 Take Home Activities The following activities can be done at home as part of your study in preparation for the HSC: Activity 1: Using the diagram below, write a paragraph on how the inflammatory response works when a soft tissue injury occurs. Inflammatory response the response the soft tissues undergo when damage occurs to the muscles, ligaments and tendons. 1. Tear or contusion occurs 8. While scar tissue is being laid down, regaining function of the area is the main focus. This is done through rehabilitation. 2. Bleeding is caused by the capillaries within the soft tissues being damaged. This may continue for hours 6. The clot starts to get broken down by the body. Healing continues until all clot and tissue swelling have disappeared. 3. Clotting will occur and form a bruise. If movement continues, bleeding will continue. 7. Scar tissue is laid down as the clot and tissue are removed. This then leads to it contracting which shortens the length of the soft tissue that was affected. 4. Swelling occurs due to increased bleeding and tissue fluids to the injured area. 5. If movement occurs and disturbs the blood clot, secondary damage may occur. This can also occur if the damaged capillaries do not provide cells in the area with enough oxygen. PDHPE Enrichment Day 2017 Sports Medicine Page 65
10 Activity 2: Write a response to the following question - Describe how you would immediately treat the injured athlete, using examples from the scenario given on slide 9. Activity 3: Lightning writing write responses to the two questions and have your teacher mark them for you using the marking criteria provided. (See next page.)
