1 High School Theme: Introduction to Athletic Training and Knowledge of the Human Body 1. What is a certified athletic trainer (role, education, continuing education)? 2. What is a sports medicine team? 3. How is the human body described anatomically? 4. What is the structure and function of the skeletal and muscular system? 5. How does the body heal? How is it different for soft tissue or hard tissue injuries? How can injury treatment impact the healing process? Standard: Timeline: 3-4 weeks Standard: 3. Emotional and Social Wellness Demonstrate respect for individual differences in physical activity settings Demonstrate collaboration, cooperation, and leadership skills Demonstrate responsible behavior in group settings Certified Athletic Trainer ATC (education/accreditation), sports medicine, anatomical terminology, names of bones, names of muscles, muscle actions, types/naming of joints, injury types, stages of healing! Minute Paper What is an ATC?! What is Sports Medicine and who/what falls inside the field of sports medicine?! What is the anatomical position and why is it necessary?! Venn Diagram Compare and contrast healing in both a soft tissue and hard tissue injuries! Choose a demo model (taffy, Oreo, stick, can) and explain the force and the injury it creates in the body.! Summarize daily lessons Cornell notes! Group Ticket Out the Door: Construct a skeleton using bones (put the pieces together)! Quiz on bones of skeleton! Identify type of injury presented in scenario! Unit Summative Test! Presentation on Athletic Trainer Describe the role of the athletic trainer and other members of the sports medicine team. 3 High School Theme: Emergency Procedures and Skills 1. If you are not trained in first aid or CPR, how can you be of help in an emergency situation? How can you assist if you are trained in first aid and CPR? 2. Why is it important to be trained in first aid, CPR, and AEDs? 3. What is the role of the athletic trainer in providing emergency care and what skills are necessary to provide this care? Timeline: 2-3 weeks Emergency plan/action, vital signs, assessment (signs and symptoms), treatment options, cryotherapy techniques! Minute Paper What would you do if you came across _? (scenario)! After the lecture, the students will be asked to create a Scenario that they may be asked to present in front of the class. The scenario should include an athlete, a sport, a situation or event, and the signs or symptoms they would be experiencing.! Write an emergency plan for this room.! Demonstrate proper infection control when administering aid to a bleeding victim! The students will write a one paragraph reflection of what they learned, and give two examples of situations when they may need to use their wound care skills in real life (at home, on vacation, camping, etc.)! Vital Signs Quiz! 1st Aid/CPR certification (if available) - Section quizzes and questions (from workbook) - Written test optional for certification - CPR test on manikins! Skills Exam assessed at the end of the semester! Unit Summative Test Effectively evaluate emergency situations and respond appropriately given various situations. Describe the importance of having knowledge to help in emergency situations. Apply and perform necessary skills to treat and prevent athletic injuries (taping/wrapping/others). What special considerations need to be considered in treating different injuries? Timeline: 9 weeks Specific anatomical locations/landmarks, bones, muscles, ligaments, miscellaneous structures, special tests, types of injuries, signs & symptoms, treatments, rehabilitative exercises! Identify the injury based on the scenario given (How would you treat it immediately? Rehab?)! Minute Paper What injuries are common to (Pick a sport)? Why?! After the lecture, the students will be asked to create a Scenario that they may be asked to present in front of the class. The scenario should include an athlete, a sport, a situation or event, and the signs or symptoms they would be experiencing.! Unit Summative Tests Lower Extremity, Core, Upper Extremity! Research / Presentation injury/illness topics related to sports medicine!
