2 A NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS PODOPTEROTEGAEUS (ACARI: ORIBATIDA) BY T. FUJIKAWA 1 (Accepted July 2007) NEW SPECIES NIPPON ORIBATIDA PICEA GLEHNJI FORESTS PODOPTEROTEGAEUS SUMMARY: The forth species of the genus Podopterotegaeus was newly described from natural Picea glehnii forests at Mt. Meakan and Mt. Hayachine in Japan. ZusAMMENFASSUNG : Eine neue Art von der Gattung Podopterotegaeus wurde beschrieben aus Picea Wald in Nippon. In 1969, AoKI erected a genus Podopterotegaeus, designating a new species, P. tectus from Shiga Heights as the type. PIFFL (1972) established the family Podopterotegaeidae for the genus, and described a new species P. altimonticola from Nepal (3,900 m). PAN'Kov (1984) added P. bisetus from the Far East in Russia to the genus. Members of the genus are remarkable by their exceptional lamellae and humeral region. The present species with characteristic features of the genus was collected from natural Picea glehnii forests of Mt. Meakan in Hokkaido and Mt. Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, and described newly as the forth member of the genus. The notation follows after AOKI (1969) and VAN DER HAMMEN (1989). PODOPTEROTEGAEUS MIY AMAENSIS spec. nov. [Japanese name: Miyama-hireashidani] (FIGS. 1-4) M easurements and eo/or (14 exs.): Body length, 321 (334) 343 flm; wide, 186 (194) 207fLm. Light yellowish brown. Surface smooth notogaster but finely granulated on prodorsum, humeral region, ventral region and legs. Prodorsum: Rostrum truncated but hard visible from above because of large lamellae covered (FIG. la). Rostral setae (ro) smooth and short, inserted at the lateral side of rostrum (FIG. 2A). Lamellar surface weakly striated under granulation. Cusps long, concaved at the anterior margin, with barbed lamellar setae (le) anterodorsally (FIG. 3A). Tutorium like vertical ridge without tooth, extending forwards from bothridia for a distance of about three-forth as long as the prodorsum. Interlamellar region with weakly sclerotized ridges at the lateral side. Interlamellar setae (in) sparsely barbed. Bothridia large with developed dorsal and ventral bothridial plates, opening antero-laterally. Sensilli (ss) long, conspicuously barbed unilaterally at the middle and wholely at the distal one-third. Exobothridial setae (ex) fine, located antero-ventrally on bothridia. Lateral prosomatic mark (m) present (FIG. 2B). Relative lengths: ss> in> le > ex "" > e ro. I. Notogastet: Slightly longer than width, bearing eleven pairs of dorsal setae peripherally. Surface smooth except for humeral regions. Humeral regions granulate, rather angular in form, with a pocket-like excavation bearing two setae, c 1 and c 2 at the bottom; cl barbed unilaterally, longer than c 2 ; c 2 pilose (FIGS. 2C & 2D). Other nine pairs of dorsal setae fine. Five pairs of lyrifissures and gland opening visible at the lateral side (FIG. 2E). Ventral region: Genito-anal setae: ( ); all setae smooth, short. Genital setae inserted near inner margin of the plates; g 1 longer than the remainder. Anal opening wider posteriorally than anteriorally, resembling triangle in form. Anterior interlocking well-developed. Subcapitulum diarthric, bearing each one pair of anterior (a), medial (m) and posterior (h) infracapitular setae; setae smooth. Pedotecta developed. Epimeral setae: ( ); setae smooth, short. Pedipalpal setae excluding solenidion: ( ): Chelicera! setae, cha thick, barbed unilatelally with mid-potion strongly elbowed; chb thin, barbed bilaterally (FIG. 3B). MATERIAL EXAMINED: Holotype (NSMT-Ac 11798) from mosses at the forest floor of a natural Picea glehnii Masters forest at the western side of Mt. Meakan (about 700 m above the sea-level) of Mo-Ashoro District in eastern Hokkaido, Aug. 27, 2001, Y NAKAMURA; 11 paratypes (NSMT-Ac 11799, 11800a and 11800b ): the same data as holotype; 2 paratypes: humus and soil of a natural P. glehnii forest, at Mt. Hayachine in Iwate Pref, Nov. 6, 2000, Y-H. NAKA MURA. The types are deposited in the National Science Museum, Tokyo. REMARKS:, The new species is very similar to the type species, P. tectus Aoki, 1969 among three known members of the genus Podopterotegaeus Aoki, 1969 in dorsal view. The author tried to reexamine the type specimens, but without success. According to the original description of all members belonging to the genus, the new species differs from P. tectus by smaller body size, concave anterior margin of cusps bearing lamellar setae anterodorsally, eleven pairs of dorsal setae including two setae into humeral excavation, and interlamellar ridges, from P. bisetus by seta c 1 longer than c 2, and different structure of interlamellar ridges, and from P. altimonticola by concave anterior margin of cuspis, setae ex inserted at the anterolateral side of bothridia and different setal number epimerata and genua I. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author desires to express her obligation to Pro Dr. Y NAK.AMURA of Ehime University and Dr. Y-N. NAKAMURA of Kyushu University for their giving her the samples.
