2 General Information Dear Colleagues and Friends This seminar will review basic principles and new frontiers of Upper Limb Reconstructive Surgery. Trauma is like an epidemic disease in our era, particularly in large cities. New developments in the field of surgical procedures and the clinical experience of renowned surgeons will be presented and discussed in this two-day course. It is therefore my pleasure to invite you to the Latin American Trauma Course -IBRA Seminar for the Upper Limb, which will be held in São Paulo,, August 26 27, During the Sessions of hand trauma and wrist trauma, we will discuss the state of the art in bone fixation, tendon repair, ligament reconstruction and soft tissue management. The course will also provide Practical Training Sessions in the anatomy room of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo. As Dr. Rames already lined out, it will be a great opportunity to discuss new findings, to review basic principles and developments of treatment of the most common upper limb traumas. São Paulo is a huge urban center with about 20 million people living in the metropolitan area. Traffic and crime are certainly issues as in all other large cities in this world. Trauma and reconstructive surgery are thus vital for the health management in the area. In this context, the IBRA Seminar will provide a unique experience of teaching, learning and sharing experiences with many renowned surgeons. 9 General Information Professional requirements for participation The courses are open to all working in the field of bone science as expressed in the objectives of IBRA. There are no specific requirements for participation although it is advisable that the candidate should have an MD diploma or the equivalent. Basic structure of the IBRA courses: The courses offer the basics in clinical diagnostics, treatment and follow-up generally focusing on bone surgery. The core of each course deals with stateof-the-art surgical techniques. For the round table discussion with the audience, each coordinator will bring two clinical cases for discussion (10-15 minutes of discussion each). Research Support IBRA offers financial support for research projects dealing with bone biology and the improvement or development of internal fixation devices for maxillofacial and limbs surgery. With the emphasis on innovation and suitability for practical application, 95% of the research budget goes towards applied research and clinical studies and 5% towards basic research. Education IBRA s education area offers clinicians special courses on the application of specific methods of treatment. 21 Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de (FMUSP) IOT - Instituto de Ortopedia e Traumatologia São Paulo, The Orthopeadic and Traumatology Institute (IOT) is one of the institutes that compound the Clinics Hospital of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo. Is among the largest Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology in Latin America and among major research centers in. More than 40,000 patients -of whom 2100 are surgical cases- are annually treated in the emergency room of IOT. Currently, the Orthopeadic and Traumatology Institute (IOT) occupy two buildings: the first with 8 floors and second with 4, totaling 5,000 square meters of built area. Both buildings are dedicated for the treatment of diseases of the locomotor apparatus, 7 specialty laboratories and a medical staff with more than 200 physicians, including: 86 orthopedics, 48 residents specialty and their own group of Anesthesiologists.
