2 General ForewordInformation Dear colleagues and friends, it is my great pleasure to invite you to Munich in 2018, to participate in the IBRA Symposium IBRA meets EACMFS and ESTMJS on Wednesday, 19 th September 2018, on the occasion of the 24 th EACMFS meeting, which will take place in Munich, Germany, from 18th 21st September 2018, which in 2018 will be a joint meeting with the ESTMJS annual meeting. So, by now 6 years after the IBRA consensus conference on condylar fractures held in Marseille in 2012, our goal for Munich is to reach an up-to-date consensus on state of the art treatment of fractures of the condylar base, neck and head, based on online voting by both faculty and the participants. A high ranked international faculty will put a special focus on approaches, paediatric fractures and fractures directly involving the TMJ. These long standing and highly controversially debated topics were decided taking into account the more and more surgically oriented approach to a category of fractures, which traditionally have long been considered not to amenable to safe and stable osteosynthesis. We also want to discuss which among the many various and rapidly evolving technical ways to cope with these demanding fractures will allow best to restore TMJ functionality and to avoid adverse long-term sequelae to the TMJ. Fees for attending to EACMFS sessions on Wednesday will allow full access to the IBRA symposium and vice versa during 19th of September. The EACMFS congress offers several social activities, such as e.g. an evening dinner at the famous Munich Hofbräuhaus scheduled for Wednesday evening. As an international forum reaching across geographic and cultural borders, IBRA offers an up-todate network for the exchange of experience and knowledge in applied bone and tissue research. History IBRA was founded in Zurich, Switzerland on September 25, 2004 at the initiative of eighteen forward-looking clinicians. Its primary aims are the exchange of professional knowledge, promotion of new scientific developments, engineering of the musculoskeletal system, coordinated multi-centre research and highly specialized advanced training. Research Support IBRA offers financial support for research projects dealing with bone biology and the improvement or development of internal fixation devices for maxillofacial and limbs surgery. With the emphasis on innovation and suitability for practical application, 95% of the research budget goes towards applied research and clinical studies and 5% towards basic research. Education IBRA s education area offers clinicians special courses on the application of specific methods of treatment. IBRA s particular concern is to train tomorrow s highly qualified research scientists. IBRA enhances its members qualifications through a scholarship program. 9

10 General Information Venue Congress Center Munich City Gasteig Rosenheimer Strasse Munich Germany Additional Information The EACMFS/ESTMJS meeting will be located in the Gasteig, Munich s culture and education centre, which is home of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and was created as a place for musical events and meetings. The Gasteig is located close to the famous historical city centre and conspicuous on the right-hand riverbank of the river Isar. It can be easily reached via the urban-suburban commuter railway system and offers various hotels in direct reach of the congress venue. Munich is very easy to reach, having direct suburban railway commuter connections with Franz Josef Strauß Munich International Airport to the venue in less than 45 minutes (S 8 goes every 20 minutes directly to Rosenheimer Platz viz. Gasteig). The weather during September before the opening of the Munich Octoberfest on September 22nd, which starts immediately the day after the EACMFS congress, is usually very good in an area which allows relaxation and strolling not only in the historical part of the city, which is one of the touristic highlights of Bavaria in southern Germany with many historical spots, museums, comfortable beer gardens, but also in the marvellous surroundings, including the Bavarian lakes and royal castles. As the Octoberfest will attract a lot of tourists, please make sure to make your hotel reservation well in advance. So visiting ESTMJS will offer a perfect opportunity also to attend to the European congress and to extend the visit to the famous Octoberfest. 10
