Anxiety Class Presentation by Dr. Joe Harvey (Associate Professor of Ministry, Johnson University Florida, 2017) Resources: Congregational Leadership in Anxious Times by Peter L. Steinke and Deadly Emotions by Don Colbert
ANXIETY Defined ANXIETY comes from the Greek word ANANKE Meaning throat or press together Word used for rings around the necks of slaves Associates with tightness, narrowness and a feeling of suffocation Biblical Examples: In my distress [zarar] I called upon the Lord [Yahweh]; to my God I cried for help (Psalm 18:6) Do not be anxious [merimnate] about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6).
ANXIETY Types & Effects TYPES Acute (situational or occasional) Chronic (ongoing; only the presenting problem; debilitating) EFFECTS Repressive Effect (narrows thinking) Infectious Effect (spreads) Reactive Effects Simplify Ignore Freeze Scapegoat
ANXIETY Understanding Stress Events and Experiences or Perception? What do you believe about (1) Importance, (2) Consequences and (3) Effort? In some sense, good and bad stress events are the same. Past Pains/Wounds Remembered (A timeless chemical response; An accelerated condition) Winning the Lottery Stress as a Mind-Body Disease (psychosomatic): generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, depressions, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder Stress and Physical Problems (heart, headaches, skin conditions, inflammation, breathing, immune system (cancer))
ANXIETY Stress Hormone Addiction Adrenaline creates as powerful a high as morphine, and it affects the body chemically in much the same way, using the same receptors. Remember always: the heart, nervous systems, and various other organs of the body respond to positive stress events in exactly the same way they respond to negative stress events. Don Colbert, M.D. Are you addicted to your own stress hormones? Constantly in a Hurry; Always Driven to Complete the Next Goal; Burning the Candle at Both Ends What do you really want?
I m in a Hurry (And don t know why) Alabama Don't know why I have to drive so fast My car has nothing to prove It's not new But it'll do 0 to 60 in 5.2. Can't be late I leave plenty of time Shaking hands with the clock I can't stop I'm on a roll and I'm ready to rock. I hear a voice That say's I'm running behind I better pick up my pace It's a race And there ain't no room For someone in second place. Oh I'm in a hurry to get things done Oh I rush and rush until life's no fun All I really gotta do is live and die But I'm in a hurry and don't know why.
SADD (Spiritual Attention Deficit Disorder THE PROBLEM 1. Entertainment Conditioning 2. Multitasking Mentality 3. Success as Busyness THE SOLUTION 1. Silence, Solitude and Prayer (Mark 1:35) 2. Clarity of Values and Priorities 3. Redefining Success
Psalm 131 A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of David. LORD, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don't concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the LORD-- now and always.
