THE D10 CHICAGO The Difference We re Making
The Difference the D10 Made for Shree Shree is a 24-year-old with Down syndrome and relapsed leukemia. Completing her treatment with Rush in 2006, she was cancer-free for almost 10 years before her cancer returned. As a longtime patient, Shree considers the staff at Rush her second family and feels as though the infusion room is her home a space where she and countless patients frequently receive treatment for hours at a time. Thanks to The D10 Chicago 2016 athletes and their supporters, today Shree has a bigger and brighter home in the Rush Pediatric Clinical Research and Infusion Center a livelier, renovated space with greater privacy, noise control, sunlight and enhanced comfort. Support from The D10 Chicago 2016 brought Rush University Children s Hospital one step closer to fulfilling their mission, as the new infusion center now offers a better patient and family experience and creates greater capacity for more patient transfusions and clinical research trials.
The Difference We re Making in Quality of Life Today and Tomorrow Rush specialists work tirelessly to improve our patients quality of life every day. The D10 Chicago 2017 will help fund the following programs and clinical trials designed to do just that: Rush s pediatric osteosarcoma research group will study the underlying biology of tumors and metastases and develop new potential interventions in treating osteosarcoma and preventing its spread. Rush specialists have already examined how acupuncture affects pain, nausea and quality of life in children with diverse chronic pain conditions and now controlled trials are needed to clarify the safety and effectiveness of acupuncture in pediatric populations. With the inclusion of integrative medicine and psychology services, Rush specialists will develop a program to provide a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric oncology symptom management.
Through research we have figured out how to use existing drugs in different ways and combinations, and as a result, we ve been able to double the cure rate for pediatric cancers. Paul Kent, MD Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist Rush University Medical Center Rush is grateful to The D10 Chicago participants and supporters for their partnership in advancing the fight against pediatric cancer. Your commitment gives help and hope to patients and families from Chicago and beyond. Thank you for your support.
The Difference We Want to Make This Year Cure rates for many pediatric cancers have doubled in the past 30 years, from 48 percent in 1980 to 86 percent in 2005 and research has been a driving force. However, far too often, care and research for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer lag behind care and research for other cancer patients. With the leadership of Anna Spagnoli, MD, the Woman s Board Chair of Pediatrics, Rush is working to change that and you can help. The following funding levels are just some of the ways The D10 Chicago 2017 can help Rush advance the research, treatment, facilities and quality of life for pediatric oncology patients and their families: A $500 donation could send children with cancer to camp for a week to grow and learn from other children coping with similar diseases in a supportive and fun environment. A $1,000 donation could fund integral lab supplies in the pediatric osteosarcoma research group s study to develop new interventions in treating osteosarcoma and preventing its spread. A $2,500 donation could provide massage therapy for one patient in the pediatric pain management trial, examining how acupuncture may be a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain conditions. A $5,000 donation could provide sensory friendly tools for testing, treatment and research or distraction toys for blood draws or painful procedures. A $10,000 donation could fund a summer fellow in the pediatric oncology research group, supporting clinical trial research in quality improvement, psych-social, oncofertility and survivorship. A $25,000 donation could provide acupuncture treatment through a pediatric oncology symptom management program, improving children s emotional and physical well-being. A $50,000 donation could provide Rush s pediatric osteosarcoma research group with essential equipment for developing new potential interventions in treating and preventing osteosarcoma.
