1 Human Anatomy and Physiology I BIO 201 Course Syllabus Dr. Patricia Ashby Scottsdale Community College office: NS115 phone: patricia.ashby@scottsdalecc.edu Meeting Times: Lecture: MTW 7:30-9:30 in SL108 (section 15701) Lab: MTWR 10:00 12:00 (section 15702) Textbooks: Required (pick one): Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 13 th Edition, Tortora & Derrickson Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 12 th Edition, Tortora & Derrickson Human Anatomy and Physiology, 7 th or 8 th Edition, Marieb & Hoehn Anatomy and Physiology, 4 th or 5 th Edition, Saladin OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology Online Free Textbook Optional: Photographic Atlas for A & P Laboratory, 5th Edition, Van de Graaff and Crawley Course Objectives: The goal of this course is to provide students with an essential foundation in anatomy and physiology of human beings. Topics include histology, cells, tissues, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. This course, along with its companion course BIOL202 and other basic science courses (microbiology, chemistry) will prepare students for advanced work in their chosen fields. Course Requirements: Four lecture exams will be given during the semester, the dates of which are indicated on the attached schedule. Ten quizzes will be given in lecture, each worth 10 points. The lowest two quizzes will be dropped. Quiz dates are indicated on the attached schedule. In addition, four case studies worth 5 points each will be assigned. Details regarding the case studies will be provided later. Two lab practicals and ten lab quizzes will be given during the semester, the dates of which are indicated on the lab schedule. Your grade will be based on the following: Lecture Lab 4 Exams (100 points each) 400 pts. 8 Quizzes (10 points each) 80 pts. 4 Case Studies (5 points each) 20 pts. 2 Lab Practicals (50 points each) 100 pts. 10 Lab Quizzes (5 points each) 50 pts. TOTAL 650 pts. Grades will be based on the following points: A 585 minimum points (90%) B 520 minimum points (80%) C 455 minimum points (70%) D 390 minimum points (60%) F less than 390 points
2 Material covered on the exams will come directly from lecture and assigned readings. It is therefore essential that students attend all lectures and take detailed notes. Makeup exams are rarely given and only for excused absences, such as documented illness, family emergencies, etc. Makeup exams may be of an entirely different format than regular exams. Academic dishonesty of any form will not be tolerated. The penalty for cheating or plagiarizing will be an F for the course. Attendance Policy You are required to attend class. An excused absence includes the following circumstances: documented official absence (e.g. school function, with official verification), religious, injury, sickness, or loss of a relative. All require proper documentation. Any other type of absence is unexcused. Withdrawal and Incomplete Policy Students can withdraw from the course with a W through June 10. Upon request, the instructor can withdrawal a student with a grade of W or "Y" based on student grades. Withdrawals will not be issued after the last day for student withdrawals which is June 19. An incomplete (I) will be given to a student who has completed at least 80% of the required coursework, is passing, and is unable to complete the remaining coursework due to illness or other circumstances beyond the student's control. If approved by the instructor, the student and instructor will complete an Incomplete Contract. General Education is WOVeN through the curriculum at Scottsdale Community College. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt class will be given a verbal or written warning. Any subsequent misbehavior may result in the student being sent to the Department Chair or Dean of Students and possible withdrawal from the class.
