4 VH Rubric Score Description 3 Student response includes the following 3 elements. Reasoning component = 3 points o The student provides a correct explanation that a table that contains (1,1) does not necessarily represent a proportional relationship. o The student provides a correct explanation that a table that contains only positive values does not necessarily represent a proportional relationship. o The student provides a correct explanation that a straight line does not necessarily form a proportional relationship. Sample Student Response: In order for a table of values to represent a proportional relationship where one entry in the table is (1,1), all other entries in the table would have to be in the ratio 1:1. The values 2 and 3 are not in a 1:1 ratio. A table of values that has only positive values does not necessarily represent a proportional relationship. There are many tables of only positive values that are not in a proportional relationship. For example, the points (1,2) and (2,2) have positive values but because they do not form a line that passes through the point (0,0), the points do not form a proportional relationship. Just because the graph that contains these points is a line does not mean the points form a proportional relationship. The line that is formed would also need to contain (0,0) and this line contains (0,-1) Note: Other valid explanations are acceptable. For each part, if the student s response only indicates whether or not the reason indicates a proportional relationship without justifying why, then the student receives no credit for that part. 2 Student response includes 2 of the 3 elements. 1 Student response includes 1 of the 3 elements. 0 Student response is incorrect or irrelevant.

6 Annotation Anchor Paper 1 Score Point 3 This response receives full credit. It contains three of the three elements required: The student explains that reason 1 does not indicate a proportional relationship (in porportional relationship it doent matter if there is a 1,1 plot as long as it has a 0,0 plot). Note: The student is expected to address (0,0) being necessary to determine proportionality not (1,1). The student explains that reason 2 does not indicate a proportional relationship (boath porportional and non porportional relationships can have boath negitive numbers and positive numbers). Note: There are three typical types of justifications for reason 2; addressing that proportional line can contain negative numbers, not all lines containing positive values are proportional or non proportional lines contain positive values. The student explains that reason 3 does not indicate a proportional relationship (the have to be a straight line that connects the points but in some cases the same thing can happen in a non porportional relationship). Note: There are two typical types of justifications for reason 3; addressing the line needing to also pass through the origin or straight lines can be non proportional.

The student explains that reason 3 does not indicate a proportional relationship [Just because the line is straight does not mean it goes through (0,0)].

The student does not justify why reason 3 is not an indicator of a proportional relationship (you must have points that form a straight line). The response incorrectly determines reason 3 must indicate a proportional relationship (true). Note: If a student incorrectly provides that one of the reasons is true, then the response cannot receive credit for the explanation. Since none of the reasons given indicate a proportional relationship, there is no way an explanation can justify that they do.
