2 Course/Module description: The purpose of the course is to review the research methods which may be used to test both the processes and the results of psychotherapy. Such research allows the understanding of the fundamentals of psychopathology and brings improvement in treatment outcomes. The research methods include studies analog designs, single case designs, dismantling studies, randomized clinical study designs (RCTS) and effectiveness research. Course/Module aims: This course is designed to accomplish three related goals: 1) to obtain an understanding of the basic concepts and controversies related to researching psychotherapy (e.g., understanding the history of such research and methodological issues related to such work) 2) To be able to critically examine research articles on psychotherapy with the goals of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of any given article, and 3) to be able to determine the clinical utility of the article for a given patient. The course presupposes a basic understanding of the psychopathology (e.g., having taken at least abnormal psychology). The emphasis of this course will not be whether certain schools of psychotherapy are superior to others, nor will it be on determining the best treatment for someone you know. I will attempt to balance the importance of understanding the methodologies with clinical utility. The structure of the class will include weekly lectures/presentations and group discussions of the material covered. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1). Describe the factors important to consider when reading about or designing psychotherapy research 2) critically examine empirical articles on psychotherapy 3) design a hypothetical study on psychotherapy research which takes 1 and 2 into account Attendance requirements(%): 100 page 2 / 6
3 Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Every week there will be: 1) presentations of recent published studies by students, 2) discussion of weekly readings and comments, and 3) a frontal lecture weekly.
