2 Course/Module description: This course examines the social determinants of health at multiple levels, and their interrelationships, in order to better explain, and possibly predict, the health and mental health of children and their families. This course will stress the development of students critical thinking skills in order to help them recognize the social patterning of health and mental health problems; historical influences on current health inequalities; and the ways in which individual health, knowledge, and behavior can be reflexive, socially situated, and embedded within larger social, cultural, and historical contexts. Students will learn to identify the core social determinants of health. Further, students will be asked to apply these social determinants to the health and mental health of children and families in a number of areas of child physical and mental health. With a broader understanding of the social determinants of health and mental health for children and families, we will explore social work practice, policy, and clinical interventions for communities, families, and individuals. Course/Module aims: To describe how social, economic, behavioral, environmental, and biological conditions influence the health and mental health of children and families. To examine each of the core social determinants of health and explore their specific implications. To define a health or mental health issue in terms of the social determinants of health. To consider the application of these social determinants of health on social work practice and intervention for children and families. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: At the end of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of how social, economic, behavioral, environmental, and biological conditions influence the health and mental health of children and families. To explore the practice implications of the social determinants of health in social work with children and families. To apply the social determinants of health onto social work practice and intervention for children and families.
